Wis. mine opponents allowed to stay, for now (Native American encampment)

http://www.620wtmj.com/news/local/Wis-mine-opponents-allowed-to-stay-for-now-217693661.html

HURLEY, Wis. (AP) -- A group opposed to a northwestern Wisconsin iron ore mine will be allowed to continue camping on Iron County forest land, for now.

The Iron County Board decided to postpone action on the camp at Tuesday night's meeting.

Instead, The Daily Press reports the board sent the issue back to its forestry committee.

The camp organized by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has occupied a site near the proposed mine since mid-May. It has become a meeting place for those opposed to Gogebic Taconite's mining plans.

Scott Walkers Incredibly Bad Day, Round 2

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/07/30/1227792/-Scott-Walkers-Incredibly-Bad-Day-Round-2

Sorry about posting twice in a day, but this is just too delicious not to have a diary of it's own.

Scott Walker is having a bad day today. Not only has he had to try to walk back a bad case of foot in mouth statement yesterday as I've already brought to you, but some of the emails in the John Doe Probe have risen up to bite him in his posterior.

Yes, most of them are sealed under a secrecy order, but some were released by court order which involve a fatality in the O'Donnel Parking Structure which Milwaukee County owns during Scott Walkers reign as Milwaukee County Executive. The family of the victim are suing Milwaukee County over the incident and asked the judge for a court order for those John Doe emails.

If you remember the John Doe Probe at all you're aware that a lot of official Milwaukee County business that wasn't conducted using official Milwaukee County email servers. Instead, a secret router was installed and staffers, including Walker, used private email accounts to avoid the Open Records requirement for archiving communications. Those emails were uncovered during the John Doe Probe.

And the released emails demonstrate that Walkers gubernatorial campaign was actually running the County Executives Office.

Bill Lueders: Out-of-state donors buoy Walker

http://host.madison.com/ct/news/local/govt-and-politics/bill-lueders-out-of-state-donors-buoy-walker/article_e384e442-f933-11e2-8ed6-001a4bcf887a.html

Among some true believers, Scott Walker is not just governor of Wisconsin. He is America’s governor.

Most of the money now pouring money into Walker’s gubernatorial campaign coffers comes from people who live in other states, newly released campaign finance filings show.

Of the $3.5 million received by Walker in the first six months of this year, nearly $2 million came from out of state. This continues a trend that began when Walker first announced sweeping changes to the collective bargaining power of most public employees, prompting historic protests and an unsuccessful recall attempt.

Consider: When Walker was first elected in 2010, he raised and spent about $11 million. Of this, less than 10 percent came from donors in other states, according to the state Government Accountability Board’s online database.

Between Feb. 12, 2011 — the day after Walker’s announcement — and June 6, 2012 — the day after the recall election — his campaign took in $35.9 million. Of this amount, $21 million, or 59 percent, came from outside Wisconsin.

And of the $6.9 million Walker has raised since the recall, nearly two-thirds flowed from out of state. The campaign has been able to continue spending and even sock away $2.2 million cash on hand.

Of the $6.9 million Walker has raised since the recall, nearly two-thirds has come from out of state. Kate Golden/Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism

“That’s pretty impressive, without him even having an opponent,” says Joe Heim, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. “He’s got a bigger national image than most people realize, especially among individuals and groups that fund Republican campaigns nationally.”

Walker open to limiting police, fire unions

http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/Walker-open-to-limiting-police-fire-unions-217595271.html

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker says he is open to limiting collective bargaining for police and firefighter unions, just as was done to other public sectors unions two years ago.

Walker's comments made during a speech in Milwaukee on Monday drew swift and negative reactions on Tuesday.

Wisconsin Professional Police Association executive director Jim Palmer says Walker made a "serious misstep" and "disappointing that public safety now appears to be taking a back seat to partisan presidential politics."

Walker is frequently mentioned as a possible Republican candidate for president in 2016.

Solidarity Sing Along crowd grows as arrests continue at Wisconsin Capitol (great synopsis!)

http://host.madison.com/ct/news/local/writers/jessica_vanegeren/solidarity-sing-along-crowd-grows-as-arrests-continue-at-wisconsin/article_cbd3dc63-c23f-5cc3-8901-2166614f10b5.html

Arrests of protesters continued for the third straight day Friday at the state Capitol, suggesting a renewed effort by Gov. Scott Walker’s administration to silence the ad-hoc “Solidarity Sing Along” group is doing little to stop the daily event.

A Friday arrest count was not immediately available but the number of people handcuffed and taken away by Capitol Police officers over the lunch hour appeared to be less than the roughly 25 people arrested on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Among those arrested was the Rev. Carter Dary, a retired Lutheran minister.

Dary and Philip Gerboc, a friar with the Great Lakes Region of the Old Catholic Church, kicked off the singalong Friday by getting down on their knees and saying a prayer. The two took turns denouncing the actions of the administration.

“I urge people of all denominations, of all faiths, to step forward and take a stand,” Gerboc told the crowd of more than 100 assembled in the rotunda. “What I saw on TV the last two days (Wednesday, Thursday) is nothing more than I learned about Nazi Germany. I can’t take it anymore. I don’t want anybody in the state of Wisconsin to take it anymore.”

While the number of arrests appears to have decreased Friday, the crowd of people gathering to sing hasn't thinned.

Walker's DNR Pushes Tribe Out for Strip Mine

http://www.progressive.org/Walker-dnr-pushes-tribe-out-for-strip-mine

On Tuesday morning the Iron County Forest Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the Iron County Board pursue criminal and civil charges against the Lac Courte Oreilles Treaty Harvest and Education camp for violating county ordinances and provisions of state County Forest Law. The vote took place with no discussion after the committee emerged from closed session with their corporate counsel.
The decision comes two months after the same committee voted unanimously to approve a request by the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for a waiver to the county’s 14-day camping ordinance to allow the camp to remain established on Moore Park Road for one year.

On May 8, 2013 the Iron County Forestry department granted LCO Treaty Harvest and Education Camp host Melvin Gasper a Native American Gathering permit to gather plant materials and tap trees for syrup, and a firewood permit to collect down trees on Iron County forest lands. Both permits are valid through December 31, 2013...

...Before the meeting went into closed session, Dick Thiede asked the committee why they were going into closed session to discuss a policy decision that legally must be made in open session. Iron County corporate counsel Michael Pope said that they had grounds to close the session because the decision - that had yet to be made - was likely to result in litigation.

After the quick reading of the motion and vote, the meeting was opened up for public comment.

During this portion of the meeting, Joan Kemble said, “I’ve been in public service many years. I’ve never encountered a closed meeting followed by a vote and THEN the public comment. This is very strange to me. I’ve never heard of doing business this way.”

Congress somewhere below cockroaches, traffic jams, and Nickelback in Americans' esteem

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2013/01/congress-somewhere-below-cockroaches-traffic-jams-and-nickleback-in-americans-esteem.html

Our newest national poll finds that Congress only has a 9% favorability rating with 85% of voters viewing it in a negative light. We've seen poll after poll after poll over the last year talking about how unpopular Congress is but really, what's the difference between an 11% or a 9% or a 7% favorability rating? So we decided to take a different approach and test Congress' popularity against 26 different things. And what we found is that Congress is less popular than cockroaches, traffic jams, and even Nickelback.

Here's what we found:

It's gross to have lice but at least they can be removed in a way that given the recent reelection rates members of Congress evidently can't: Lice 67 Congress 19

Brussel sprouts may have been disgusting as a kid, but evidently they're now a lot less disgusting than Congress: Brussel Sprouts 69 Congress 23

The NFL replacement refs may have screwed everything up, but voters think Congress is screwing everything up even worse: Replacement Refs 56 Congressmen 29 (the breakdown among Packers fans might be a little bit different).

Colonoscopies are not a terribly pleasant experience but at least they have some redeeming value that most voters aren't seeing in Congress: Colonoscopies 58 Congress 31

And you can make the same point about root canals: Root Canals 56 Congress 32

You might get a bad deal from a used car salesmen, but voters evidently think they're getting an even worse deal from Congress: Used Car Salesmen 57 Congress 32

Governor Walker loses third court battle this month

http://www.cbs58.com/news/local-news/Governer-Walker-216648151.html

MADISON -- Governor Scott Walker has lost his third battle in court this month when the federal judge ruled that the lawsuit that was filed against his administration for denying health care to Wisconsin residents should move forward.

Last year two Milwaukee County women with serious health problems sued the state after Walker’s health department refused to lift an enrollment cap on the BadgerCare Plus Core health plan, even though there was room available to serve more people.
Walker administration attorneys tried to convince U.S. District Court Judge William Conley that the women had no rights under federal Medicaid law to sue the state in this case. Conley summarily rejected their arguments and ruled last week that the suit should go forward. It was the third time this month that Conley has ruled against the Walker administration.

“People who need and deserve health care should be able to access it in Wisconsin,” Richards said. “Instead, the Walker administration has tried every way they know how to block that coverage. Thankfully the courts are stepping in on the side of consumers.” Said Rep. Jon Richards.

Weiner confirms more lewd messages

Source: USA TODAY

New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner acknowledged Tuesday the existence of online messages between him and a woman not his wife that were sent after he resigned from Congress in 2011 for a similar sexting scandal.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have," Weiner said in a statement put out by his campaign. "These things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress.''

An online gossip site called The Dirty posted screenshots Monday of online messages between an account in the name of Anthony Weiner and that of an unidentified woman, dated August 2012. Weiner discusses her potential involvement in a blog for Politico, the political news site, and talks about his cats.

A second, salacious chat exchange posted by The Dirty was from an account using the name Carlos Danger, which the site, quoting the unideintified woman, says is Weiner.
