Like most Southerners with a garden, we grew HOT peppers.

My dad crunched on them raw. My stepmother put them up in vinegar. Dad was a meat eater, so greens, beans, fried okra were on the table in the summer months. It was great going to the farmer's market. We put away bushels of fresh things for the winter.

One 4th of July ...

I was on the command boat for the 4th of July fireworks display.
My second ex-husband's business was working with the NYC company who had the contract that year. It took weeks to assembly the barges in Hoboken so they could be outfitted with explosives and receivers to fire 'em. Everything went smoothly. No one was hurt. It was perfect ... well almost. One of the barges malfunctioned. Nothing fired from that one. It was unloaded the next day.

The pyrotechnic engineers were an interesting group. To say the very least.

(Reuters) - The Statue of Liberty will reopen to visitors with a July 4 ceremony on Thursday, more than eight months after its home island in New York Harbor was flooded and wrecked by Superstorm Sandy.

Lady Liberty was protectively closed by the National Park Service last October as the historic storm approached.

Before the shutdown in October, the statue had been open for only a day following a year-long renovation.

The statue itself was left largely unscathed by the historic storm, but floodwaters left docks, buildings, walkways and electrical systems badly damaged or even destroyed on Liberty Island between lower Manhattan and New Jersey. About 75 percent of the island was covered by the storm surge.

About 3.5 million people visit Liberty Island in a typical year, according to the National Park Service. The copper-clad statue, a gift from France to the United States, was dedicated in 1886 and declared a national monument in 1924.

Have you visited her?

About In_The_Wind

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieve it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. ~~~~~~~~~ For, it ends in the blink of an eye. Carpe Diem (Seize the day)!
