Don't worry, that smell in the Bronx is not what you think.
The putrid stench akin to rotting meat was decades in the making and is due to the rare blooming of an Amorphophallus titanum better known as the corpse flower.
The stinky stalk, once the official flower of the borough, will be on display at the New York Botanical Garden this week and is expected to flower over the weekend.
Native to Sumatra in Indonesia, the noxious species comprises a fleshy central spike called a spadix that holds two rings of male and female flowers, wrapped by the frilly spathe, a modified leaf that resembles a petal, according to spokesman Nick Leshi.

The unpredictable plant, which blooms only once every 30 years or so, is one of the largest flowering plants in the world and can grow up to 12 feet tall in nature.
For less than two days, the flower's unusual red interior and uncanny scent will be on full malodorous display.
The source of the awful aroma during the peak of the bloom is the female flower at the base of the plant's spadix. The flower is sending a nauseating signal to attract pollinators that eat dead animals. The plant also generates heat, giving it the approximate temperature of a human body.
It has been almost 80 years since a corpse flower first bloomed at the Botanical Garden. The fetid flower's sweaty sock and rotting flesh stench was first brought to the U.S. in 1937.
After that famous funk, the borough made the plant its official flower. But the symbol was skunked it lost its lofty title to the more appealing day lily in 2000.
For those who don't want to smell the flower in person, a live stream of the blooming will be available on the Botanical Garden's website during the rare occasion.

A crane is believed to have fallen onto a car.
Crane collapse
A crane collapsed onto the Tappan Zee Bridge and shut down the span this afternoon.
The crane reportedly fell onto a car on the bridge around noon, South Nyack-Grand View police Chief Brent Newbury said. State police said all lanes on the bridge were closed in both directions.
Newbury said he expects "a traffic nightmare." Rockland County Executive Ed Day said county emergency services were on their way to the scene, and that some first responders from Westchester County were en route as well.
