2018 Hurricane Forecasts, Potential Hudson Valley Impact Released
Weather researchers are predicting a slightly above-average Atlantic Hurricane season in 2018.

Last September hurricanes leveled Puerto Rico, wrought widespread damage in Florida and Georgia, flooded parts of Texas that trapped residents in their cars and homes, and sent refugees fleeing north. Now two new hurricane forecasts say that the Atlantic Coast – and potentially the Hudson Valley – could have a damaging storm season in 2018.
A report by Colorado State University researchers says the number of named storms and hurricanes will likely be above historical averages.
The last major hurricanes to affect the Hudson Valley were the 2012 Sandy and 2011 Irene storms. Irene had weakened to a tropical storm by the time it reached the Hudson Valley, but it still left thousands of people without power, some of them for weeks, and its extraordinarily heavy rains caused flood damage that is still being repaired.
Superstorm Sandy killed four people in the lower Hudson Valley and 43 people in New York City. It caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

Hudson Valley Assemblyman Dies Of Pancreatic Cancer
BREAKING: Frank Skartados, a state lawmaker whose district included parts of Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties, has died.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Frank Skartados, a state lawmaker in New York whose district included parts of Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties, has died.
Skartados died on Sunday morning at a hospital in Newburgh. He was surrounded by friends and family.
The assemblyman had been hospitalized on March 24 for respiratory issues and pain associated with cancer. His condition had been discovered in January when he was diagnosed with metastasized stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Funeral arrangements are being made at DiDonato funeral home in Marlboro.

Poughkeepsie Schools Closed After Threat
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Poughkeepsie city schools are closed Wednesday due to a social media threat. Here's what city school officials told the community:
Out of an abundance of caution, please be advised, the Poughkeepsie City School District will be closed on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
The Poughkeepsie City School District is aware of a recent social media post regarding the threat of a school shooting at Poughkeepsie High School. Please be assured every threat is taken seriously. Immediate action has been taken. We are working closely with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the FBI. The appropriate authorities are actively investigating this issue with the highest priority. The safety of our staff and students is our number one priority.
The Poughkeepsie district is the latest local district to suffer from a wave of threats against schools all around the country.
Schools across the nation have been on high alert since 17 people, many of them students, were killed and 16 more injured in a Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Threats to schools, many of them turning out to be unsubstantiated, have skyrocketed.
According to The Educator's School Safety Network, by last week there had been 532 school-based threats or violent incidents in the U.S. since the Parkland shooting — an average of 88.7 per school day. In all, 490 schools in 49 states had been threatened or had actual violence happen, according to the group.
