WARSAW – Zuzanna Radzik wants Polish children to know that almost every Polish town and village was part of the Holocaust.
There were about 3.5 million Jews in Poland before World War II, making up 10 percent of the overall Polish population. And some pre-war Polish towns Jews comprised as much as 70 percent of the residents.
But although Polish children learn about the Holocaust in school, many believe the killing was confined to death camps like Auschwitz and Treblinka.

My grandparents are from Plock (pronounced [pwɔt͡sk]) , west of Warsaw on the Vistula, they both went back after the war and found nothing left. In 1939, my grandmother was 17 and my grandfather 19, they knew each other, but had not spoken since my grandfather refused to lend her and a friend his rowboat; he wanted to take her out on the river.
My grandmother's sister survived, and two of my grandfather's second cousins; he lost four older sisters, no one else from either family survived the war. There are only 20,000 or so Jews left in Poland today.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords plans to attend a vigil Sunday in honor of the victims and survivors of last year’s Tucson, Ariz., shooting, which claimed six lives and critically injured the Arizona Democrat.
The Jan. 8, 2011, shooting took place shortly after 10 a.m. Arizona time in front of a Safeway where Giffords and her staff were hosting a meet-and-greet with constituents. The shooter, alleged to be 23-year-old Jared Loughner, was targeting the Congresswoman, who was critically injured, but he also shot 18 others that morning. Six died.
Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will participate in Sunday evening’s ceremony, which will be held on the University of Arizona’s campus mall. Her office did not know whether she is planning to speak at the event.
Other participants slated to attend include Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Dr. Peter Rhee, chief of the division of trauma, critical care and emergency surgery at the University of Arizona Medical Center. Rhee treated Giffords and the other victims of the shooting.

Six people were killed in the attack; all but Christina-Taylor Green died at the scene of the shooting. The deceased are (in alphabetical order by surname):
Christina-Taylor Green, 9, of Tucson. Green was accompanied to the meeting by neighbor Susan Hileman.[38][112] Because her date of birth was September 11, 2001, she had appeared in the book Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11 (page 41).She was the granddaughter of former Major League Baseball player and manager Dallas Green.
Dorothy "Dot" Morris, 76, a retired secretary from Oro Valley; wife of George, who was wounded.
John Roll, 63, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for Arizona, named to the federal bench by President George H. W. Bush in 1991.
Phyllis Schneck, 79, homemaker from Tucson.
Dorwan Stoddard, 76, retired construction worker, died from a gunshot wound to the head; his wife Mavy was wounded.
Gabriel "Gabe" Zimmerman, 30, community outreach director for Giffords, and a member of Giffords' staff since 2006. Mr. Zimmerman was the first Congressional staffer killed in the line of duty.
In addition to the six dead, thirteen other people were wounded by gunshot in the attack, while a fourteenth person was injured, but not by gunshot. Gabrielle Giffords and two other members of her staff were among the surviving gunshot victims.

Some Classic DNC Toons on Why We Need to Be Strong
We have an image problem, and it's getting us not as far as fast as we'd like. I think clearly we need to be asking ourselves how we better express (not change) our positions on some of the basic issues that effect American life. For example, I chuckle every time we get called socialist, when the truth is that there is no better advocate for capitalism than the Democratic Party; we have a sort of binary neurotic thinking that goes on and it just looks uncertain to many Americans. This is why the GOP this year is trying to smear us as not leadership material, they think that it will work and that they can ride that elephant to the White House. President Obama is getting mean; we need to get him to be meaner. Change starts within us; we have the power to build the world anew, the question is if we're ready to put aside petty difference and offer the American people a Real Deal.

Roger Salzgeber was not hit by bullets in the mass murder near Tucson a year ago, but he was wounded nevertheless.
"Some days are better than others," says the 63-year-old retiree, who was among those who held down the shooter until police arrived. "I decided to just move on as best I can. But it's not going well. This is just really, really emotional for me."
Salzgeber says he is haunted by anxiety, anger and cynicism since he and his wife, Faith, survived the Jan. 8 attack outside a supermarket. Six people were killed and 13 wounded at a meet-and-greet gathering for U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., who is still recovering from brain injuries caused by a 9mm slug.

There were a bunch of trails discovered, and lots cleared. And there was certainly a big and obvious surge of new people around the island setting aside their "rubbah slippahs" for some good 'ole hiking shoes. Not that it's a bad thing. Getting sweaty and dirty in the mountains is a hell of a good time when you're with your buddies. But with more people on the trails, mountain rescues were noticeably frequent and all over the news. At one point I remember there being over forty rescues in one month, all hiking related: poor HFD.
With all drama aside, 2011 was definitely the year of exploration for us. From our backpack trek on an outer island, to a gluch with not a single human footprint, to a ridge that only goats trample on, to a spot on a local TV show, and to some pictures featured in Hawaii Magazine, I'd say we covered a lot ground, literally and figuratively speaking.
