OPINION: Joe Biden is succeeding

By DAVID BROOKS

Joe Biden came to the White House at a pivotal moment in American history. We had become a country dividing into two nations, one highly educated and affluent and the other left behind. The economic gaps further inflamed cultural and social gaps, creating an atmosphere of intense polarization, cultural hostility, alienation, bitterness and resentment.

As president, Biden had mostly economic levers to try to bridge this cold civil war. He championed three gigantic pieces of legislation to create a more equal, more just and more united society: the Covid stimulus bill, the infrastructure bill and what became Build Back Better, to invest in human infrastructure.

All of these bills were written to funnel money to the parts of the country that were less educated, less affluent, left behind. Adam Hersh, a visiting economist at the Economic Policy Institute, projects that more than 80 percent of the new jobs created by the infrastructure plan will not require a college degree.

BOLD ENDEAVORS
These gigantic proposals were bold endeavors. Some thought them too bold. Economist Larry Summers thought the stimulus package, for example, was too big. It could overstimulate the economy and lead to inflation.

Rage Against the Machine guitarist stands with striking workers in new music video 'Hold the Line'

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is standing with thousands of striking workers across the country with a new music video called “Hold the Line: Union Strong Edit.”

The song, which features Grandson as the lead singer, was released in October on Morello’s second solo collaborative album “The Atlas Underground Fire.” The song features his signature sound and the high energy that you would expect from his music.

The four-minute music video shows the band performing in a small room spliced with photos and video of striking workers nationwide from today and years past. Some of the more recent actions highlighted in the video include striking UAW members at John Deere and striking BCTGM workers at Kellogg’s.

The timely video has premiered during a wave of strikes across the nation. Morello and the group recorded a special performance for the Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show, which aired Nov. 16.

Pride at Work St. Louis forming to help fight for LGBTQ workers' rights

Pride At Work St. Louis (P@WSTL), a new worker constituency group in formation, has launched a program to educate union members and their families on the group’s efforts to fight for equality and workers’ rights for the LGBTQ community.

Explaining the difficulties LGBTQ workers face personally and on the job to delegates at the Nov. 16 Labor Council meeting, Regina Lusby-Bingaman, a member of UAW Local 2250 and P@W coordinator, introduced the effort to grow the local group and expand its efforts to reach out to the Labor community and help union members understand the myriad of obstacles facing union LGBTQ workers.

The group’s national goals are:

To create a Labor Movement that cherishes diversity, encourages openness, and ensures safety and full equality for LGBTQ workers both in the workplace and in our unions.
To educate the LGBTQ community about the benefits of a union contract for LGBTQ working people and to build support and solidarity for the Labor Movement in the LGBTQ community.

Local-unions-team-up-to-raise-10000-for-st-louis-crisis-nursery-in-annual-s

Cairo, IL – Laborers Local 773 and Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza kicked off the holiday season last week by bringing 160 turkeys and hams to needy residents at the Arrowleaf Community Center in Cairo.

Local 773, which represents workers in construction and railroad maintenance, donated the meat and bags of other foods for Thanksgiving dinners through its charitable arm, The Laborers Care Foundation (TLC). Krispy Kreme in Marion added boxes of doughnuts.

“Once again it was a privilege of The Laborers’ Care Foundation in conjunction with Laborers’ Local 773 to partner with Comptroller Mendoza and her staff,” said Local 773 Business Manager Jerry Womick. “The town of Cairo and Alexander County is a food desert where residents have to travel in excess of 30 miles to the closest grocery stores.

“Again this year, The Laborers’ Care, through generous donations and partnerships, were able to do our part in helping the residents of Cairo. We again would like to thank Josh Downs with Comptrollers Mendoza’s office for coordinating such a well-attended and much needed event helping some of the poorest citizens of our state.”

Austin Denies Oklahoma Bid for Exception to Vaccine Mandate

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday rejected a request by Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt that his state's National Guard be exempt from a Pentagon requirement that all military members be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Stitt, a Republican, had asked Austin in early November to suspend the mandate for members of the Oklahoma Guard. In his response denying the request, Austin laid out the Pentagon's rationale for the mandate and noted potential consequences of Stitt's stated intention to defy the requirement.

In his letter to Stitt, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, Austin left open the question of how the vaccine requirement will be enforced and how far the Pentagon will go to force the issue. He did suggest that Guard troops who refuse the shots could lose their federal status, which could impact their pay and future benefits.

Austin wrote that all members of the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard, “regardless of duty status,” must follow the directions of Army and Air Force service secretaries for COVID-19 vaccine compliance deadlines. “Failure to do so may lead to a prohibition on the member's participation in drills and training” conducted under Title 32 of the U.S. Code, “and jeopardize the member's status in the National Guard.”

Philippines Rejects China's Demand to Remove Ship from Shoal

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines' defense chief rejected on Thursday China’s renewed demand that it remove its outpost on a disputed South China Sea shoal and said Chinese coast guard ships should leave the area and stop blocking Manila’s supply boats.

Philippine forces use a grounded warship, the BRP Sierra Madre, as an outpost on the submerged but strategic shoal that is at the center of an ongoing dispute with China.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Second Thomas Shoal lies within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines under the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, which China has ratified. He said a 2016 ruling by a U.N.-backed arbitration tribunal also invalidated China’s claims to the busy waterway, leaving them without any legal basis.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the Philippines Wednesday to “honor its commitment" and remove its grounded vessel on Ren’ai Jiao, the name Beijing uses for the shoal, which Filipinos refer to as Ayungin. Chinese coast guard ships have allowed Manila's boats to bring food and other supplies to Filipino forces at the shoal for humanitarian reasons, it said.

Jermaine Gales named new Lincoln football coach

EFFERSON CITY — Lincoln University has hired a new head football coach.

The school announced Monday that Jermaine Gales will take over the Blue Tiger football program. He replaces Malik Hoskins, who was fired after an 0-10 season in 2020.

“I am beyond excited about joining the Ambush,” Gales said in a press release. “The opportunity to impact the lives of young men as a head football coach has been a dream of mine since blowing my whistle for the first time. This is an opportunity to build something special and do something that has never been done before, in a community like Jefferson City, with an athletic director and president who are committed to developing our young men. I couldn’t be more excited to become the leader of the Blue Tigers. My family and I look forward to sharing the journey with the Lincoln University community, alumni, and fans.”

Gales, who graduated from Southern Arkansas in 2002, owns nearly two decades of college coaching experience at the Divison 1 and Division 2 levels. He spent last season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Bluefield State College in West Virginia. The Big Blue went 4-3 in the school's first football season since the school discontinued the program in 1981.
