New Rules Would Prevent St. Louis County From Buying Clothes Made In Sweatshops

The St. Louis County Council is considering changes to its purchasing procedures that would prohibit vendors from supplying it with garments made under sweatshop conditions.

Councilman Pat Dolan said he introduced the changes during Tuesday night’s council meeting at the request of municipalities in his district.

While Dolan said he’d prefer everything bought by the county was made in America, these changes will ensure the basic civil rights of workers are being met.

“If it’s out of the county and fair labor standards apply in that country, then they have to abide by them,” Dolan said.

Raising awareness of teen dating violence

BONNE TERRE , MO February is teen dating violence awareness month and Kohm is one of the guidance counselors at North County High School.

Kohm talked to FACS Instructor Amy Lee’s class about the different kinds of abuse. Lee said as teachers they see it all the time.

“It doesn’t always have to be physical,” she said.

Kohm explained that abusive behavior can be physical, emotional/verbal, sexual, financial or even digital. It’s something one person in a relationship uses to control the other. The key word is “control.”

February 23, 1896 – The Tootsie Roll is invented

In 1896 its founder Leo Hirschfeld, an Austrian immigrant to the United States, started his candy business in a small shop located in New York City.[2] He wanted a "cherry" candy that would not melt easily in the heat, and would be an economical artificial alternative to traditional chocolates.[citation needed] He named the candy after the nickname of his daughter, Clara "Tootsie" Hirschfeld.[2] By 1905, production moved to a five-story factory. In 1917 the name of the company was changed to The Sweets Company of America, and the business became a listed company in 1922. In 1931 the Tootsie Pop—a lollipop with Tootsie Roll filling—was invented. Its low price made it popular in the Depression era. During World War II, Tootsie Rolls became a standard part of American soldiers' field rations, due to the hardiness of the candy under a variety of environmental conditions.

And in contrast to the Wal Mart report on sales.....

Feb 21 (Reuters) - Supermarket operator Safeway Inc on Thursday said store sales have strengthened from the previous quarter and it has seen no impact from higher payroll taxes, which have cut take-home pay for many shoppers.

If trends hold for the remainder of the week, Safeway's identical-store sales will be up 2 percent for the first eight weeks of the quarter, Steve Burd, Safeway's chairman and chief executive, said on a conference call with analysts.

Safeway's identical-store sales were up 0.8 percent, excluding fuel, for the fourth quarter.

At Safeway, that closely-watched measure includes results from established supermarkets that have not been replaced or significantly renovated.

New Arch history delves into wheeling and dealing behind the building of an icon

At first glance, a new history of the Gateway Arch that promises to “dispel long-held myths” and cast a “provocative new light” might appear an epic attempt to throw a wet blanket over our town’s shiny national monument on the riverfront.

But even as historian Tracy Campbell weaves his thorough and often unflattering story of the city politics and private-interest ambitions that played heavily in the Arch’s formative years, he can’t help but admire the 630-foot architectural marvel that is recognized by people all over the world.

"You could go there right now and just see people quietly standing under it and staring at it and wanting to touch it. And feeling somehow happy that they’re there,’’ said Campbell, a University of Kentucky professor, in a phone interview.

His short biography, simply titled "The Gateway Arch” ($26) will be released in May as part of the Yale University Press "Icons of America” series that documents American history or culture through the study of an individual, event, object or cultural phenomenon. Subjects have included the Statue of Liberty, Fred Astaire and the hamburger.

Pa. Hospital Gets Shoeshine Tips Totaling $200,000

A shoeshine man has given a Pittsburgh children's hospital a total of more than $200,000 in tips he's collected over the last 30 years.

Albert Lexie says he's been shining shoes for $5 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh since the early 1980s. He says most customers tip him $1 and some give him an extra $2. He says a doctor gave him a $50 bill for Christmas.

WTAE-TV ( http://bit.ly/136jx4X ) says Lexie gives all his tip money to the hospital's sick children.

Dr. Joseph Carcillo says Lexie has donated more than a third of his lifetime salary to the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund, which helps parents who can't afford to pay their sick children's medical costs.
