National Carrot Cake Day Carrot Cake has been made since the Middle Ages, when sugar and other sweeteners were rare and very expensive, and so people used sweet vegetables to flavor their puddings. This technique became practically obsolete for several hundred years, but resurfaced in the 20th century. During World War II, the British government rationed many luxury foods and household staples including sugar. To appease the nation’s sweet tooth, the Ministry of Food promoted recipes for carrot puddings, carrot-filled pies, and carrot cakes. Today, many families in the UK still serve carrot cake on Christmas Day! Carrot cake is much healthier than many other baked goods. A traditional recipe calls for carrots, raisins, walnuts, and brown sugar. Enjoy a slice from your local bakery in honor of Carrot Cake Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/carrot-cake-day/

Four Chaplains Memorial Day It was the evening of Feb. 2, 1943, and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 service men, merchant seamen and civilian workers. On Feb. 3, at 12:55 a.m., a periscope broke the chilly Atlantic waters. Through the cross hairs, an officer aboard the German submarine U-223 spotted the Dorchester. The U-223 approached the convoy on the surface, and after identifying and targeting the ship, he gave orders to fire the torpedoes, a fan of three were fired. The one that hit was decisive–and deadly–striking the starboard side, amid ship, far below the water line. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains–arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers. http://www.fourchaplains.org/the-saga-of-the-four-chaplains/

The Day The Music Died The Day the Music Died Day is always observed on February 3rd. This day we remember the unfortunate and untimely death of singers 22-year-old Buddy Holly, 17-year-old Richie Valens, and 28-year-old J. P. Richardson, aka: “The Big Bopper”. These three singers died in an airplane accident on February 3, 1959 near Clear Lake, Iowa. Their pilot, Roger Peterson, also died in the crash. http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-the-day-the-music-died-day-february-3/

Crepe Day Celebrate Crepe Day (as opposed to Pancake Day) with a crispy, thin, French-style crepe – we recommend the classic lemon-and-sugar approach, but why not go crazy and experiment? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/crepe-day/

Marmot Day Marmot Day is a celebration of marmots, a group of large squirrel-like animals that includes groundhogs, woodchucks and ground squirrels. Even though marmots are found all over the world, from Canada to Mexico and from Russia to India, these animals don’t seem to get the attention they deserve. Marmot Day was established in 2002 to celebrate these interesting creatures. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/marmot-day/

World Play Your Ukulele Day Each year Play Your Ukulele Day gives you a chance to ‘change the world four strings at a time’ by playing your ukulele, sharing it, and teaching others to play. That is, presuming that you own one… https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/play-your-ukulele-day/

World Wetlands Day World Wetlands Day is an opportunity to remember those beautiful, boggy parts of our world that ducks, geese, swans, frogs, water voles, flamingoes and all other sorts of waterfowl and animals need to have in order to exist and thrive in harmony. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-wetlands-day/

National Baked Alaska Day Baked Alaska is made by placing slices of sponge cake in the bottom of a pie pan, filling it with vanilla ice cream and then covering completely with a whipped meringue mixture. The whole thing is baked in the oven at a very high temperature for a short period of time to allow the meringue to solidify slightly and brown. The meringue protects the ice cream from melting, thus giving this dessert its distinctive cold/hot sensation and creamy/crunchy texture loved by so many. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/baked-alaska-day/

Car Insurance Day Some celebration days, you suspect, have had a little industry help in getting started. It’s fair to say that Car Insurance Day doesn’t have deep folkloric roots. Even so, in reminding us of something important, it’s right up to date. Around the world, we spend billions on car insurance every year, yet few of us understand exactly how it works, or have the time or patience to question what we pay. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/car-insurance-day/

Decorating With Candy Day On Decorating With Candy Day, people can create and enjoy their sweet creations without guilt. After all, it’s a recognised day where we are allowed to indulge – and indulge we shall! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/decorating-with-candy-day/

Serpent Day Serpent Day is a day of reflection and coming to grips with our fears. It’s dedicated to pondering our reactions to the prime material behind that expensive high-fashion snake-skin handbag. Its unique, slithering form has long been associated with wisdom and power, used for either good or evil. Either way, it is apparent that the serpent deserves a day dedicated to its position in culture over the last few thousand years. In all honesty, where would Adam and Eve be without the third party? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/serpent-day/
