Missouri Gov. Greitens signs right-to-work legislation

Gov. Eric Greitens took a road trip Monday in celebration of making Missouri the nation's 28th right-to-work state.

The Republican signed Senate Bill 19, which bars unions and employers from requiring workers to pay dues, at three ceremonies. The first one was in Springfield at an abandoned warehouse before a small crowd of supporters.

“For too long in the state of Missouri, for too long people bowed down to intimidation, they bowed down to powerful union bosses who acted to protect their own interests instead of protecting the interest of Missouri workers,” Greitens said.

The ceremony was disrupted briefly by about 10 pro-union demonstrators who shouted “right to work, wrong for us!” They were escorted out a minute later.

Ballet Day here’s something magical about going to ballet. The music, the outfits, the utter passion of the dance as the ballet artists lose themselves to the performance, all of it comes together to create a beautiful, otherworldly experience for those in attendance. There is an almost magical power in their graceful movements across the stage, like flower petals on a stiffening breeze. Ballet Day encourages you to get out and see the ballet again, or for the first time if you haven’t already. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ballet-day/

Send A Card To A Friend Day We all have different types of friends. Some are like family and some are more aptly described as acquaintances. No matter how we describe them, they each play a role in our lives. We can recall with clear vision our good and bad moments with each of them. Today is Send a Card to A Friend Day. It’s your chance to tell them exactly what they mean to you and why. This is not about a phone call or an email. This is a day to send a card… in the mail! Yes, there still is a person who delivers physical letters and cards! They come down your block every day…check it out! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/send-a-card-to-a-friend-day/

Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor's Day. Instead of greeting your neighbors with a cursory nod as you usually do, on this particular day you should give them a cheery wave. Not just any old cheery wave though; a wave that involves all your fingers. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/wave-all-your-fingers-at-your-neighbors-day/

Email to Missouri GOP Senator Blunt on Devos nomination

Senator:
I urge you to vote NO on confirming Besty Devos for Secretary of Education. There to my mind has never been a less qualified candidate for any post in government or one who has so many conflicts of interest. Please do the right thing for The State of Missouri and for the United States and vote NO on this unqualified person.
Thank You Very Much,
Sincerely,

Lame Duck Day celebrates the ratification of the 20th amendment of the United States, an amendment added to shorten the time that the President, Senators, and Representatives spent in office after an election. During this time, especially if the representative was not reelected or is no longer eligible for reelection, they no longer have to concern themselves with the desires of their constituency. While this only happens during certain small sections of time, significant decisions have been made during this period. What kinds of things? Homeland Security is one of the biggest results of a lame duck congress meeting, but there have also been wars started and a president impeached, all under the auspices of a lame-duck session.
Where did the term come from? In the 1700’s a Lame-Duck was used to describe those stock brokers who had gauged their investments badly and could no longer pay off their debts. Later, it was extended to include unethical business-men who would find themselves bankrupted, and continue to do business anyway, even though they had no money to pay employees or suppliers. The term has now been extended to include the representatives listed above, and to describe those sessions where the people in session are no longer beholden to those people who elected them. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lame-duck-day/

Frozen Yogurt Day lets you get your sweet tooth satisfied with cold creamy deliciousness, while helping to keep your heart and body healthy! What could be better? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/frozen-yogurt-day/

Western Monarch Day Get out your tiara…wait no! It’s not that day. It is Western Monarch Day. It is a day to celebrate the Western Monarch butterfly. It travels from place to place but this day specifically we give thanks for their return to the central California coast. Why is this so important? It is important to watch and make sure that they do return. The monarch butterfly is facing a terrific decline in numbers. Many conservation groups are calling for it to be protected as an endangered species and claim that the number of declines could be as high as 90%! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/western-monarch-day/

Thank A Letter Carrier Day The best way is simply to meet them at the mailbox and offer them a hearty thank you. If you know what their preferences are you can offer them a cold drink or a hot cup of tea, or just some snacks to take with them on the road. Remember, they’re the men who bring you good news and bad, but let’s not think about that last part, no reason to shoot the messenger. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/thank-a-letter-carrier-day/

The feeling of success when you finally understood the Dewey Decimal System? Or was it the smell of the print on the pages of the books that kept you coming back? These memories are something that not many children are being introduced to since almost everything is on the internet. On Take Your Child to The Library Day it’s the perfect opportunity to make sure your child can close their eyes and conjure these memories as well. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/take-your-child-to-the-library-day/

National Carrot Cake Day Who doesn’t love a nice warm piece of carrot cake with creamy frosting starting to melt! Oh my, it is my kind of sweet heaven! Bubblegum Day Bubblegum Day began in 2006, when author Ruth Spiro, decided that the world needed a day focused around education, philanthropy, and best of all bubble gum! It was such a phenomenal success that an entire institution built up around it, encourages philanthropy in children and allowing the school to support a charity that fits the beliefs and policies of the school. It’s not just schools either! Businesses, libraries, and community centers all have been known to hold events centered on Bubble Game Day, because charity isn’t limited to educational institutions. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bubblegum-day/

Four Chaplains Memorial Day The Four Chaplains, also sometimes referred to as the "Immortal Chaplains" or the "Dorchester Chaplains", were four United States Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship SS Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943, during World War II. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out.[1] The chaplains joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Chaplains

Candelmas Near the end of the winter season, as ancient people looked forward to the planting season of spring, many different cultures found ways to celebrate this shift from the cold and dark days to a happier and more productive time of year. Ancient Celts took this time of year to honor the Goddess Brigid. Brigid was the Goddess of purification and fertility. They would honor her by processing from the village across the fields while praying for the health of their soil before planting. The Romans tied their festival to the God Lupercus. This was their God of fertility and shepherds, again playing into the desire to shake off winter’s bindings and bring fertility and light to the planting time. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/candlemas-day/

World Play Your Ukulele Day Everyone loves the sound of a guitar, it’s true, but those who discount the ukulele based on its size just don’t understand how amazing a little sound can be. It’s got a lovely, soft little voice that fills you with joy, and there’s hardly a person who can keep their hands off them, even if they haven’t a clue how to play. Thankfully, no one asks that you know how to play ukulele on Play Your Ukulele Day, we just ask that you pick up that Ukulele and play! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/play-your-ukulele-day/

World Wetlands Day is a great excuse to go tromp around in your nearest wetland, but it’s also a great chance to take a moment to think about the environment. Have a seat and let’s take a look at the wetlands and why it is important to have a day in their honor. Do you know what exactly a wetland is? A wetland can be defined as land that contains marshes or swamps. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-wetlands-day/

Daily Holidays - February 1

I got ahead of myself yesterday and posted the days for 2/1 instead of 1/31 so today we look at February's Monthly Celebrations.

Cherry Month Because cherries are so… very. Cherries are an amazing fruit, little jewels dangling from branches that not long ago painted the sky with a cloud of pink petals. They come in an amazing array of flavors and colors, from the rich black cherry to the deliciously light and sweet Rainier cherry. While most people enjoy cherries in the middle of summer, Cherry month serves to remind you that cherries can be enjoyed at any time of year, in all their forms. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherry-month/

Hot Breakfast Month Breakfast is often said to be the most important meal of the day, and that’s why so many of us make a point of getting up in the morning and pouring ourselves a bowl of our favorite cereal. If not cereal, than a cold bagel smeared with cream cheese, and if we’re in a particular hurry, then we’ll have a protein bar or one of the many breakfast bars on the market to see us through the day. Hot Breakfast Month encourages us to break this cycle of coldness and start the day off HOT! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hot-breakfast-month/

Heart Month There’s an epidemic rolling through America, and its killing thousands of people every year long before their time. It’s quiet, and doesn’t often send warning before it attacks, and when it does it can leave you weak, hurting, and in the most severe cases, dead on the ground. Everyone is susceptible to it, especially men, and it’s taken out everyone from the most sedentary desk worker to professional joggers. Heart Health month encourages you to combat heart disease and add precious years to your life. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/heart-month/

Library Lover's Month Stop hugging that library. No wait, my mistake, I forgot that it’s Library Lovers Month- and it seems to have come at just the right time as many local libraries are struggling during the economic downturn. So why love your local library? Libraries are a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; they offer security and peace and quiet. They are also a place where you can focus surrounded by likeminded people with the desire to acquire knowledge. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/library-lovers-month/
