Ukrainian Fighter Pilot Reveals How US F-15 Jets Helped Kiev Battle A Superior Russian Air Force Led

A Ukrainian MiG-29 pilot who goes by the call sign ‘Juice’ has been giving interviews to media outlets about how Ukrainian aircraft and air defense systems have managed to keep the Russians in abeyance for over a month now. The Ukrainian Air Force has managed to do this with MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters.

While the MiGs are used for air-to-ground and air defense missions, the Su-27s are primarily kept for air-to-air missions. The Su-27 is a more powerful air defense asset, however, the early loss of aircraft units has shrunk the size of the fleet, which was always smaller than the MiG-29 fleet.

A typical air defense mission of a MIG-29 involves patrolling an area in search of an aerial threat, ‘free hunting’ or sometimes just pushing the enemy aircraft outside the area.

“If they have us on their screen, especially if we have a few guys patrolling the area, they don’t want to get into trouble. So, we push them from this area,” Juice explained in his interview.

Interesting piece on the training that the Ukrainian Air Force has received from the US and their tactics. It provides another glimpse into the one of the many ways that the US is helping and has helped Ukraine to fight the Russians for those who believe that we simply are not doing enough.

Holland America Line Ship to House Ukrainian Refugees

A Dutch-flagged cruise ship will provide a temporary home to some 1,500 Ukrainians who fled their country in the wake of Russia's invasion.

Holland America Line said its vessel Volendam will be used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees as part of an agreement announced by Netherlands and City of Rotterdam government officials. The ship will dock at Merwehaven, a cargo port on the north side of the River Maas in Rotterdam, for three months to provide a temporary home for approximately 1,500 Ukrainians, part of a larger commitment from the Netherlands to accommodate 50,000 people who fled the war in their homeland.

“We are in a unique position to accommodate the immediate need for food and housing, so we felt it was very important to work with the City of Rotterdam and charter this ship,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Our company was founded in Rotterdam around the mission of helping immigrants find a better life. So today we’re proud to be a small part of a similar mission for Ukrainians who have tragically been displaced.”

Under the agreement to charter Volendam, Holland America Line will provide three hot meals per day, private stateroom accommodations, housekeeping services, use of public spaces, fitness facilities, internet access and other necessities. Volendam will be staffed with approximately 650 crew members. The ship will remained docked to ensure Ukrainian families can transit easily to and from services in Rotterdam.

RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE CAMPAIGN ASSESSMENT, APRIL 3

Frederick W. Kagan, George Barros, and Karolina Hird

April 3, 3:30 pm ET

Ukraine has won the Battle of Kyiv. Russian forces are completing their withdrawal, but not in good order. Ukrainian forces are continuing to clear Kyiv Oblast of isolated Russian troops left behind in the retreat, which some Ukrainian officials describe as “lost orcs.” Russian forces had attempted to conduct an orderly retreat from their positions around Kyiv with designated covering forces supported by artillery and mines to allow the main body to withdraw. The main body of Russian troops has withdrawn from the west bank of the Dnipro and is completing its withdrawal from the east bank, but the retrograde has been sufficiently disorderly that some Russian troops were left behind.

The war is far from over and could still turn Russia’s way if the Russian military can launch a successful operation in eastern Ukraine. The current line of Russian occupation in southern and eastern Ukraine is still a significant gain in Russian-controlled territory since the start of the war. If a ceasefire or peace agreement freezes a line like the current front-line trace, Russia will be able to exert much greater pressure on Ukraine than it did before the invasion and may over time reassemble a more effective invasion force. Ukraine’s victory in the Battle of Kyiv is thus significant but not decisive.

The disorder of the Russian withdrawal suggests that at least some of the units now reconcentrating in Belarus and western Russia will remain combat ineffective for a protracted period. Russian troops attempting to refit after pulling back from around Kyiv will likely have to reconsolidate into their units, identify which soldiers are still present, sort out their equipment and assess its combat readiness, and generally reconstitute before they can even begin to receive replacements and new equipment and prepare for further combat operations.

Russian forces are likely abandoning the east bank of the Dnipro fully as well, withdrawing from around Chernihiv to the north and from Brovary to the east. Russian troops will likely seek to hold a salient around Konotop and Sumy long enough to allow their forces to complete their retrograde from near Kyiv but will then likely withdraw back to Russia from almost all their positions west of Kharkiv.

MEP calls for Kerry Group to close Russia operations

A Fianna Fáil MEP has called on Irish food company Kerry Group to close its operation in Russia.

Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher, who is also a shareholder with Kerry Group, wrote to chief executive Edmond Scanlon on Friday urging him to pull out of Russia, following that country's invasion of Ukraine.

In the letter, seen by RTÉ's This Week programme, Mr Kelleher said Kerry Group's continued operation in Russia "legitimises the Russian administration and fundamentally provides the capacity, through taxation etc., for Russia to continue with its illegal war."

Mr Kelleher said that while a decision to close the business in Russia would harm the group's business, "I believe all of us have a moral obligation to do what is right."

PM slams "cruel and savage acts" in Ukraine

Both the Finnish president and premier on Sunday reacted to reports of Russian atrocities in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) and President Sauli Niinistö on Sunday expressed support for war crimes investigations in Ukraine.

Marin said alleged attacks on civilians in Ukraine must be investigated as war crimes. She condemned atrocities allegedly committed by Russian forces near Kyiv before withdrawing from the region.

Taking to Twitter (siirryt toiseen palveluun), the PM said war crimes need to be investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.

Marin tweeted she was shocked by the "cruel and savage acts" reported as Russian troops have left Bucha, near Kyiv, as well as other regions in Ukraine. "We won't close our eyes, we won't be silent, we won't forget," she wrote.

Mississippi teacher pay raise signed into law

Wages for teachers in Mississippi will now be more competitive with surrounding states, surpassing both the regional and national averages. House Bill 530 was signed into law this week by Governor Tate Reeves after months of legislative debate. The law will increase the base salary for new teachers, and also increase wages for those with more experience in the profession. State Superintendent Carey Wright says this pay raise has been earned by educators.

“Mississippi is a national leader because our students made more progress on the National Assessment of Education Process than almost every other state in the nation. Teachers drove this achievement,” says Wright. “And now we are pressing forward to help our students emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever.”

Mississippi has a shortage of teachers, and the state has historically had one of the lowest teacher wages in the region. Kelly Riley, Executive Director of Mississippi Professional Educators, says the pay raise can help retain existing teachers, and recruit new hires out of the state’s teacher training programs.
