National Penuche Fudge Day Even if you are on a strict weight watch and working hard towards that beach body, make sure your cheat day falls on Penuche Fudge Day. The sweet light-brown concoction will make it worth your while! Penuche is a flavor native to New England, but its caramel-like goodness has earned the treat nationwide respect – so much so that it got its own day in the calendar!

Penuche stands apart from its fudge relatives mainly because it is based on brown rather than white sugar. This gives it its characteristic color and texture and makes it lighter than classic fudges. Confectioners often add other ingredients to penuche, most famously pecans, walnuts, or raisins, in order to enhance its texture and taste. Feel free to whip up a batch yourself if you cannot find a local bakery which dispenses the golden brown treat and celebrate Penuche Fudge Day with a yummy bite! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/penuche-fudge-day/

Rat-catchers Day National Rat Catcher’s Day, which is annually observed on July 22, is a holiday commemorating the famous Pied Piper of Hamelin as well as a day to say “Thank You” to all present day exterminators.

According to the folktale, residents of the German town of Hamelin, hired a strangely dressed man to rid their village of rats by playing his flute. Upon finishing the task, the townsfolk refused to pay — so the Pied Piper returned, again played his flute while the children followed him and he then disappeared with them all. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Hammock Day Nothing sounds quite as relaxing as kicking back and relaxing in a hammock – and there’s no better way to celebrate Hammock Day! Find two sturdy, conveniently located trees (or improvise – and don’t limit yourself to the outdoors), string up a comfy bed… and relax! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hammock-day/

National Junk Food Day Sometimes, the idea of being healthy, preparing a balanced meal, and snacking on carrot sticks isn’t too appealing. Junk Food Day is all about satisfying your cravings for something naughtier, greasier, and definitely more fattening than the nutritional but not-very-exciting meal you know that you really should be eating. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/junk-food-day/

Moon Day Every once in a while, the human race achieves something truly remarkable, and Moon Day celebrates the occasion when we first left footsteps upon our nearest neighbour.

It’s probably best to gloss quietly over how long it is since the last visitors landed there, but that’s no reason to skimp on the celebrations. After all, there’ll never be a better excuse to launch firework rockets over your neighbourhood and dress up in a tinfoil suit with a fishbowl on your head. Alternatively, you might prefer to drag a telescope out into the garden, or maybe sit in a circle howling like wolves as the moon rises.

Be careful who you invite to your Moon Day party, though, as there’s bound to be one guest who insists the party is not really happening and that you are faking the hot dogs and beer in a film studio somewhere in Nevada. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/moon-day/

Space Exploration Day The origins of Space Exploration Day date back to man first walking on the moon, with the day itself first observed to commemorate this historic event during events held in the early 1970s. It is about more than just the moon landings though and is intended to pay homage to the incredible achievements of the past and fire up enthusiasm for the benefits of space exploration efforts to come in the future.

The Space Exploration Day website provides details of ways to take part, with these produced by the man behind the original idea for the event, J. David Baxter. These include taking a nature hike in the spirit of exploration, organizing public star gazing parties, setting off model rockets, or having a science fiction party to show a classic space movie. There are plenty of other options to have some fun and celebrate a universe to be explored. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/space-exploration-day/

National Lollipop Day Do we really need an excuse to celebrate the humble and wonderful lollipop? Enjoy Lollipop Day responsibly; don’t go too overboard on the sugary treats, and remember to brush your teeth! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lollipop-day/

World Jump Day Many ideas are floated to help combat global warming, and World Jump Day is one of them. The aim of the day is to shift the orbit of Earth, to extend daylight hours and to create a more standardized climate throughout the world.

The concept was promoted by German artist, Torsten Lauschmann, and the first World Jump Day was slotted for July 20, 2006. He claimed that 600 million people in the Western Hemisphere were going to jump at the same time. This proposal was actually a satirical art installation, but it reminded people about the effects of global warming.

Earth weighs 100 trillion trillion pounds, and the average weight of a human is 137 pounds, which multiplied by 600 million equals 8,220 million pounds. Working out the pound-force of that figure involves a complicated formula, but rest assured that 600 million people jumping simultaneously (if anyone could organize the event) would make no difference to Earth’s orbit. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-jump-day/

National Daiquiri Day Need a way to cool off? Why not celebrate Daiquiri Day. This refreshing drink was invented in the early 1900’s in a small mining town of Daiquiri near Santiago, Cuba, an engineer named Jennings Stockton Cox created a simple drink called a Daiquiri. Cox came up with this concoction in an effort to cool down during the summer month, with a simple blend of lime juice, sugar and local Bacardi rum, over cracked ice. This he found to be the best way to boost the morale of mine workers during the hot months. Such was the success of Cox’s drink not only did he received a generous stipend from the company, he also received a monthly gallon of Bacardi to continue supplying the refreshing drink. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/daiquiri-day/

Raspberry Cake Day With summer in full swing, it’s hard to imagine anything more seasonal and enjoyable than fresh, juicy raspberries; that is, except for Raspberry Cake Day – a whole day dedicated to enjoying raspberries in cake format! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/raspberry-cake-day/

National Ice Cream Day National Ice Cream Day is celebrated each year on the 3rd Sunday in July and is a part of National Ice Cream Month. This day is a fun celebration enjoyed with a bowl, cup or cone filled with your favorite flavor of ice cream.

Thousands of years ago, people in the Persian Empire would put snow in a bowl, pour grape-juice concentrate over it and ate it as a treat. They did this when the weather was hot and used the snow saved in the cool-keeping underground chambers known as “yakhchal”, or taken from the snowfall that still remained at the stop of mountains by the summer capital.

It is believed that ice cream was first introduced into the United States by Quaker colonists who brought their ice cream recipes with them. Their ice cream was sold at shops in New York and other cities during the colonial era.

Ben Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known to have been regular eaters of ice cream.
First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the Inaugural Ball in 1813.
1832 – African American confectioner, Augustus Jackson created multiple ice cream recipes as well as a superior technique to manufacture ice cream.
1843 – Philadelphian, Nancy Johnson, was issued the first U.S. patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer.
It is said that today there are over 1,000 ice cream flavors. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY RHUBARB WINE DAY The registrar of National Day Calendar has designated the third Saturday in July of each year as National Strawberry Rhubarb Wine Day. This day celebrates the smooth and fruity taste you will find in a glass full of delicious, chilled, Strawberry Rhubarb Wine. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

TOSS AWAY THE “COULD HAVES” AND “SHOULD HAVES” DAY Across the United States, the third Saturday in July of each year recognizes Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day.

Created by author and motivational speaker Martha J. Ross-Rodgers, this day is intended for all to let go of the past and live for the present. To help with this venture, find a paper and pen, write down your “could haves” and “should haves” and then through it away.

Once you have thrown your “could haves” and “should haves” in the trash, make the following resolution:

“From this day forward, I choose not to live in the past, the past is history that I can not change. I can do something about the present, I choose to live in the present.” http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Peach Ice Cream Day Peaches are a summer fruit, and Peach Ice Cream Day is a way to celebrate their goodness while enjoying a cooling delicious dessert.

Peaches are native to China and were taken to America by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Commercial cultivation has made them the second biggest fruit crop in the US (after apples). Peach ice cream is generally only made during the summer months and can be enjoyed in a sundae, as an ice-cream cone, on top of slices of peach, or simply on its own in a dish. It doesn’t need sprinkles, sauces or toppings as they can overpower the delicate flavor.

Celebrate Peach Ice Cream Day by making your own in an ice-cream maker. It’s easy to do and you can use big chunks of fresh peach, like the old-fashioned ice-cream used to be. Be generous with your scoop! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/peach-ice-cream-day/

Wrong Way Corrigan Day J uly 17th is known as National Wrong Way Corrigan Day.

Douglas Corrigan was an Irish-American aviator who “accidentally” flew to Ireland on a flight from Long Beach, CA, to New York. Apparently, Corrigan made a navigational error during his flight, caused by heavy cloud coverage…he somehow ended up in Ireland! Was it a true error? No one will never know, as Corrigan never admitted to intentionally flying to a different country. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Yellow Pig Day Yellow Pig Day originated in the 1960s when two math students from Princeton spent a long time obsessively analysing the number 17. It seems that they went a little mad eventually, and decided to invent the concept of a yellow pig with 17 toes, 17 teeth, and so forth… Now Yellow Pig Day is an important part of the academic calendar, and is celebrated with cake, carols, parades and general revelry. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/yellow-pig-day/

Man killed after towboat hits Eads Bridge, knocking worker off platform

A man working on the Eads Bridge was killed about 3:15 p.m. Thursday when a southbound towboat pushing barges ran into the bridge, St. Louis Fire Department officials said.

The impact caused the man to fall from some scaffolding on which he was working and land on a barge. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

No other information about the accident or the victim was available.

The bridge was closed to traffic for a time. MetroLink used a shuttle to transport its riders between its East St. Louis and Busch Stadium stops for a time, but train service resumed shortly before 5 p.m.

National Corn Fritters
Day Where would we be without corn fritters? This simple, unassuming dish is comfort food heaven. Add your favorite condiment to a corn fritter and that’s some good eating right there.

So, some bright spark had the great idea to create a very special day of celebration for this humble food favorite, and very creatively called it Corn Fritters Day. Who are we to argue with such a great idea? The more people that eat corn fritters and recognize them for the culinary treat they are, the better!

Corn Fritters Day is a celebration of comfort food and simple cooking. With some corn, egg, flour, milk, and melted butter, anyone can throw together a batch of these side dish favorites. With some creativity, you can add your own favorite ingredients to spice them up or create your very own fritter monstrosity. Sardines and chocolate chips, anyone? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/corn-fritters-day/

Cell Phone Courtesy Month We all know the situation: being subjected to someone else’s conversation while in a public space. Speaking on a cell phone makes some of us forget our manners! Celebrate Cell Phone Courtesy Month by following these tips for cell phone etiquette.

When you are in a meeting, don’t check your phone constantly for texts and emails. Concentrate on the people you are with.

Set your cell phone to silent or vibrate when in a courtroom, theatre, or place of worship.

Don’t embarrass yourself; if you need to make a call which you know is going to get intense and emotional, save it for when you are somewhere private. The rest of the world doesn’t need to know about your relationship issues!

Finally, check your personal volume control. It’s all too easy to start yelling into your cellphone. Everyone in your vicinity will appreciate your good manners in avoiding “cell yell”! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cell-phone-courtesy-month/
