Sinkhole opens up in Washington and jaded humor emerges

Source: Reuters

By Deborah Zabarenko
WASHINGTON | Tue Mar 12, 2013 7:31pm EDT

Washington is used to being the brunt of jokes, particularly those centered around the action, or lack of it, on Capitol Hill. But on Tuesday, the focus moved to the Adams Morgan neighborhood, where some saw a symbol of Washington - a gaping sinkhole in the middle of a bustling sidewalk.

Unlike the fatal sinkhole that swallowed a man as he slept in his Seffner, Florida, home on February 28, or the one a golfer fell into on an Illinois fairway earlier this month, the Washington sinkhole is more on the order of a large pothole. Surrounded by yellow tape, it is about a yard (meter) square, as deep as 10 feet and sits a few miles from the White House, another frequent source of late-night television humor.

But the sinkhole quickly took on larger proportions as chatter erupted on social media. "A sinkhole has opened in Washington D.C. Last to push their congressman in is a rotten egg," tweeted Bill O'Keefe. "25 ft deep sinkhole in DC today and it's expanding. Seems like I got out at the right time. It was nice knowing you, Washington," tweeted T.C. Sottek.

Metropolitan Police were dispatched to the sinkhole site, and local residents said the problem might be due to a new sewer that had just been installed. "If that is the case, it would be typical of this kind of sinkhole collapse," said Jim Kaufmann, a research physical scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey.

Police flood Brooklyn neighborhood in third night of brutality protest (PHOTOS)

Dozens of arrests have been reported, with riot police descending on Brooklyn's East Flatbush neighborhood as New Yorkers came out for a third night of protest over the police killing of 16-year-old Kimani Gray.

The demonstration began at Brooklyn's 67th Precinct in East Flatbush, the part of New York's Brooklyn section where Gray was shot to death by police on Saturday. Witness and police accounts differ on whether Gray was brandishing a weapon before he was killed.

According to autopsy results, Gray was shot seven times – four times in the front of his body, and three times in the back.

Brooklynites were heard shouting "murderers!" at the massive police presence Wednesday as officers prohibited people from even stepping onto the street in one of New York's poorer neighborhoods while police helicopters circled overhead.

Intrade shut down due to financial probe

Source: CNNMoney

By Chris Isidore @CNNMoneyInvest March 11, 2013: 7:07 AM ET

NEW YORK
- A notice on the site's home page gave few details of the probe, but said that it had halted trading on the site "due to circumstances recently discovered" that require further investigation and "may include financial irregularities."

The site says it has closed and settled all open contracts at fair market value as of the close of business Sunday. But it said it is not possible to make any payments to members until the investigation is concluded.

The site, which allowed customers to place bets on matters such as U.S. presidential election outcomes, the weather or other upcoming events, is based in Ireland. The odds are set based on the bets made on both sides of the various predictions.

While the betters are right about some of the events they bet on, including President Obama's re-election last year, they are also wrong on some high-profile predictions, including setting odds at 80% that the U.S. Supreme Court would rule the health care reform act was unconstitutional.

Fukushima forests found to be radioactive

AlJazeeraEnglish · Published on Mar 9, 2013

Two years after the triple calamities of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster ravaged Japan's northeastern Pacific coast, forests that cover 70 percent of the Fukushima Prefecture have been found to contain high concentrations of radioactive cesium. With traces revealed not only in the fallen leaves and soil, but in the trees themselves, the findings suggest that radiation has permanently found its way into the ecosystem.

The government is already spending billions of dollars decontaminating various towns in Fukushima, but the forests continue to emit radioactivity, putting the residents at risk. Scientists suggest cutting down the trees as soon as possible because the cesium will gradually be transferred to the earth itself.

Many residents are now suing TEPCO, the nuclear plant's operator, for the impact the disaster has had on surrounding communities. It is estimated the power company will pay some about $400bn in cleanup costs and compensation. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Fukushima.

Berlusconi Sentenced to Jail Time

NTDTV · Published on Mar 7, 2013

Berlusconi to a one-year jail term for making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call.

Full Story:

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to a one year jail term by an Italian court. Thursday's sentence was for making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call in a case related to a 2005 banking scandal.

The media tycoon has denied any wrongdoing, and can seek to have the decision overturned before a court of appeal. Under Italian law, Berlusconi is not expected to serve any prison term until all possible appeal trials have been carried out.

The 76 year old billionaire is facing two other trials for alleged tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute. Berlusconi's centre right coalition was narrowly defeated in February's parliamentary elections.

Italy's MPS bank's David Rossi found dead in Siena

BBC | 7 March 2013 | Last updated at 05:17 ET

The Monte dei Paschi di Sienna Monte dei Paschi is the world's
oldest surviving bank

The communications director of troubled Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) has died in an apparent suicide. David Rossi's body was found beneath an open window at the bank's 14th Century headquarters in Siena.

Mr Rossi was among several MPS employees whose homes and offices were searched by police last month - though no charges were brought against him. MPS, which is the world's oldest surviving bank, is at the centre of fraud and corruption allegations.

Investigations are under way into how hundreds of millions of euros went missing amid risky investments in complex financial deals. The bank has needed a multi-billion-euro bailout from the Italian state to help cover its losses.

"The death of David Rossi is a terrible tragedy," Monte dei Paschi said on its Facebook page.

Drip-feeding Chinese culture in Sudan

AlJazeeraEnglish · Published on Mar 7, 2013

Sudan is one of China's most important trading partners in sub-Saharan Africa. But the relationship is not purely economic. China has been promoting its culture in Sudan through opening cultural centres, organising exhibition, and sending Sudanese students to study in Chinese universities. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Khartoum, the Sudanese capital.

- However one may look at what the Chinese are doing, it's still a damn-sight better policy to win people's hearts and minds, rather our policy of just blowing them up.
