photo booth style photos land forever home for dog

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/11/25/teton-the-pit-bull-photos_n_6201302.html?cps=gravity

Who could resist this smooshy little pit bull face? Not Erin Bird.

Within a day of Teton's photos going up on the Humane Society of Utah's Facebook page, Bird had sent a text to her husband, half-jokingly suggesting they go get him.

"He said yes," Bird says, "much to my surprise."

"I think [the photos show] his goofy and sweet personality," says Guinnevere Shuster, the photographer. "If his picture makes you want to reach down squeeze his face and shower him with kisses, then I've done my job because he loves to give kisses."

We'd say she did her job really well here.

Shuster's been trying out photo booth-style adoption pictures for about six months now, with great success. All these doggies now have homes:

Advocates help pay for travel to a shrinking number of abortion clinics in Texas

http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article/Advocates-help-pay-for-travel-to-a-shrinking-5921864.phpAUSTIN - The young woman lived in Dallas, 650 miles from Albuquerque, but that is where she would have to go for an abortion, she was told. New state regulations had forced several of Dallas' six abortion clinics to close, creating weekslong waiting lists. By the time the woman could get in, she would be up against the Texas ban on abortions after 20 weeks' gestation.

But she could not afford the trip to New Mexico.

So it was that she had left a phone message with a hotline in Austin and, on a recent evening, heard back from Lenzi Sheible, the 20-year-old founder of a fund to help low-income women pay the unexpected costs of traveling for abortions in Texas - or to states beyond. They spoke four times that night as the woman wavered about going to Albuquerque alone.

"You can always call me when you get to New Mexico; just talk to me," Sheible said. By the end of the evening, she had texted the woman confirmation numbers for a flight the next day, $680 round trip, and four nights' stay at an Albuquerque hotel, with shuttle service to the clinic.

-----

Sheible's fund now has a seven-member board that includes her husband, Warren Sheible. In January, the group will have its first paid staff member. In just over a year, she said, the fund received about $60,000, mostly in small amounts, and has spent about $25,000 to help 106 women statewide.

Creed Frontman, Says He's Broke, Homeless, and Goes Days Without Food

Scott Stapp, Creed Frontman, Says He's Broke, Homeless, and Goes Days Without Food in Shocking Video

Creed frontman Scott Stapp confessed to fans via Facebook on Wednesday, Nov. 26, that he’s homeless and broke. In a shocking and sad 15-minute-long confessional, the singer claims he’s a victim of “financial theft” and has been left without money for food or housing.

“Right now I’m living in a Holiday Inn, by the grace of God, because there’s been a couple of weeks I had to live in my truck,” Stapp, 41, tells the camera.

Things have been so rough for the “With Arms Wide Open” singer, he claims: “I had no money, not even for gas or food. I went two days without eating because I had no money and ended up in an emergency room.”

So what happened to all his cash?

“About eight weeks ago, I began an audit of not only my record company but my personal finances,” he explains. “During the course of that audit a lot of things were uncovered. A lot of money was stolen from me or royalties not paid.”

In response to the demoralizing food donation bins placed in some stores to help out its underpaid employees, Walmart workers have chained a massive donation bin in front of the luxury Manhattan apartment of heiress Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton.

Last year, a Walmart store in Canton, Ohio placed donation bins inside an employee break room, which read: “Please donate food items here so Associates in need can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.” Employees snapped photos of the bins and shared them on social media to the outrage of many on the Internet.

Despite the outcry, a store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma recently placed similar donation bins there and workers in Indiana are reporting that managers are organizing bake sales and encouraging workers to support their colleagues with food donations, causing a flare-up on the Internet.

The bin that was chained in front of Walton’s $25 million Park Avenue condo reads: “Walmart Owner Alice Walton: We don’t want charity. We want decent pay. Love, Walmart Workers.”

Two newly constructed side by side buildings in China are now touching - residents are scared

These pictures show the crumbling concrete at the top of two newly-built tower blocks in China - amid claims they are starting to topple towards each other.

The 15-storey blocks were built in Shanghai, eastern China two years ago to offer accommodation to people relocated to make way for a Disney theme park.

But residents who live in the high-rise apartments, in the Pudong New Area in Chuansha Town, say the original narrow gap between the buildings has disappeared and they are now touching.

However his remarks have done little to settle the fears of people who were promised they could settle in 'model' relocation homes.

Qin said: 'I have gone back but I haven't been able to sleep at all since. I keep expecting it to fall down.'

S.F. creating an ‘amnesty pond’ for unwanted goldfish

San Francisco’s Mountain Lake was recently poisoned to kill off any non-native fish. Turns out, there were a ton of them. The final death tally included over 850 carp, two catfish and many bass — none of them native to the spot.

The Presidio Trust isn’t blind to how the fish ended up there in the first place. As long as people buy fish as pets, some will end up in toilets, lakes and ponds.

So in order to keep Mountain Lake free of non-native species in the future, an “amnesty pond” will be set up for fish dumpers.

The amnesty pond will be located near Mountain Lake to deter dumpers from contaminating the lake, which will soon be repopulated with three-spined sticklebacks, Western pond turtles and chorus frogs. Hopefully it’s well-marked — it’s going to be tough to get people to stop using the big watery dumping ground over a smaller goldfish-friendly pond.

http://blog.sfgate.com/stew/2014/11/25/s-f-creating-an-amnesty-pond-unwanted-goldfish-dumping/

Officials at San Francisco’s Presidio purposely poisoned the pond earlier this month. Officials said the plan is to restock Mountain Lake with native creatures after the foreign fish are gone.

Workers retrieved 842 poisoned goldfish, carp and other fish that San Franciscans had dumped into the pond over the years.

Park officials plan to test the waters in May and then start restocking the pond’s original three-spined sticklebacks, Western pond turtles and chorus frogs.

The so-called amnesty pond is planned nearby so people can keep dumping their goldfish, carp and other fish.

Transgender woman dies, presented in open casket as a man

Transgender woman dies, presented in open casket as a man
Washington Times

Many people were shocked and horrified as they passed by the open casket at the funeral for their friend Jennifer Gable.

The transgender Idaho woman, who tragically died of a brain aneurysm in October at age 32, was presented as a man by her family, according to the New York Daily News.

Gable was buried as her former self, Geoffrey Charles Gable, with her hair cut short and wearing a striped suit. Her long-wavy brown locks were gone.

“I am disgusted,” Stacy Dee Hudson posted on Facebook. “A great and dear friend’s mom went to the funeral today. It was not closed casket. They cut her hair, suit on. How can they bury her as geoff when she legally changed her name. So very sad. Jen you will be missed and people who know you know that you are at peace.”

An Idaho customer service coordinator for Wells Fargo, Gable had been living as a woman for the past several years and had changed her name from Geoffrey to Jennifer.

But it seems family disregarded Gable’s change. An obituary posted on the Magic Valley Funeral Home page also recognized Gable as a male.

Strangers raise more than $30,000 for exonerated men, one holds 1st ever cell phone

As of a few minutes ago, $3900 for Wiley, 29000 for Ricky raised on gofundme pages

Strangers have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help two former death row inmates who spent decades in prison for a 1975 murder before being exonerated.

Ricky Jackson, 57, and Wiley Bridgeman, 60, walked free from prison on Friday after a witness, who was just 12 at the time, revealed he had lied about seeing the murder in Cleveland, Ohio.

The witness recanted his testimony last year, saying he had accused the men of killing a businessman following police threats.

In just three days since their release, thousands of dollars in donations have been sent to
