A boy was accused of taking a backpack. The courts took the next three years of his life.

In the early hours of Saturday, May 15, 2010, ten days before his seventeenth birthday, Kalief Browder and a friend were returning home from a party in the Belmont section of the Bronx. They walked along Arthur Avenue, the main street of Little Italy, past bakeries and cafés with their metal shutters pulled down for the night. As they passed East 186th Street, Browder saw a police car driving toward them. More squad cars arrived, and soon Browder and his friend found themselves squinting in the glare of a police spotlight. An officer said that a man had just reported that they had robbed him. “I didn’t rob anybody,” Browder replied. “You can check my pockets.”

The officers searched him and his friend but found nothing. As Browder recalls, one of the officers walked back to his car, where the alleged victim was, and returned with a new story: the man said that they had robbed him not that night but two weeks earlier. The police handcuffed the teens and pressed them into the back of a squad car. “What am I being charged for?” Browder asked. “I didn’t do anything!” He remembers an officer telling them, “We’re just going to take you to the precinct. Most likely you can go home.” Browder whispered to his friend, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything?” His friend insisted that he hadn’t.

At the Forty-eighth Precinct, the pair were fingerprinted and locked in a holding cell. A few hours later, when an officer opened the door, Browder jumped up: “I can leave now?” Instead, the teens were taken to Central Booking at the Bronx County Criminal Court.

----

This month, Browder started classes at Bronx Community College. But, even now, he thinks about Rikers every day. He says that his flashbacks to that time are becoming more frequent. Almost anything can trigger them. It might be the sight of a police cruiser or something more innocuous. When his mother cooks rice and chili, he says, he can’t help remembering the rice and chili he was fed on Rikers, and suddenly, in his mind, he is back in the Bing, recalling how hungry he was all the time, especially at night, when he’d have to wait twelve hours for his next meal.

"I want to experience a black rhino. I want to be intimately involved with a black rhino."

Texas hunter awaits federal permit to down endangered black rhino
Corey Knowlton isn’t sure if he’s going to get his wish to hunt a black rhinoceros and bring it home as a trophy. He won a coveted permit with a bid of $350,000 from the Dallas Safari Club in January.

An avid Texas hunter may not get his $350,000 safari after all.

It depends on whether the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will allow Corey Knowlton to bring home his trophy.

The Royse City hunter has killed lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffalo, but now, Knowlton is the holder of one permit to down a hefty black rhinoceros, a critically endangered species roaming the grasslands of Namibia.

He won the permit in a heated auction through the Dallas Safari Club in January that would in reverse, donate its proceeds protect the dwindling rhino population.

“I’m a hunter,” Knowlton told WFAA-TV in January. "I want to experience a black rhino. I want to be intimately involved with a black rhino."

family inherits a building and discover a 1960s shoe store inside

An American family have unearthed an Aladdin's cave of mint-condition vintage shoes in an old building they inherited from their grandparents.

The building operated as a shoe store from the 1940s until the 1960s, but the doors had been locked for decades.

Until now.

One of the family members posted the rare find to online noticeboard Reddit recently, but stopped short of revealing the location, so as to prevent any break-ins.

91 year old woman gets "do not resuscitate, I'm 91" on her chest

The idea of a tattoo was hoped to be a bolder statement after Ms Bolten said she did not trust the necklaces.

She told a Dutch newspaper: 'I've seen on TV that it was a matter of seconds for ambulance staff - they really don't look for a necklace.

'I do not want to end up as a vegetable in a chair.'

Ms Bolten had worked with Ms Schippers to try and make the statement tattoos a formal and legal declaration to medics - and she is not the only person to have one.

In 2012 an 88-year-old Dutch woman had a similar tattoo done on her left breast to let her last wishes be known.

While Peter Hagens, 61, from Muiden in the Netherlands is another person who has http://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/535846/tattoo-pensioner-do-not-resuscitate-me

Ambulance taking man to the hospital is flagged down by motorist - there's a dog on the side step

ASON, Texas (AP) — A dog named Buddy didn't wait for an invitation when his 85-year-old owner had to go to the hospital.

Four-year-old Buddy hitched a ride on the outside of the ambulance carrying Texas rancher J.R. Nicholson to Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

Ranch hand Brian Wright said Friday that he summoned the ambulance Oct. 26 when Nicholson felt dizzy.

The San Angelo Standard-Times reports a motorist flagged down the ambulance to say a dog was on a side step. Buddy was then put into the ambulance with the patient.

Wright drove separately. At the hospital, medical staff told him about Buddy's trip. Wright retrieved the dog from the ambulance, then later drove his boss and Buddy home.
