Instead of a bed, the recently homeless man heard screams by a bus stop and sprang to action, using a stick and brick lying nearby to hurt the assailant until he ran away.
As soon as he lifted his head up, I smacked him with the stick, hard as I could on his head, Ferguson told the TV station.
And he fell off the lady, stumbled, and I smacked him again. And I just kept smacking him with the stick, I mean as hard as I could.

?w=650GILBERT, Ariz. (WKRN) A 101-year-old woman has died after a photo of her holding her great-granddaughter went viral across the Internet.
Rosa Camfields granddaughter, Sarah Hamm, posted the photo on Facebook on St. Patricks Day.
Grandma was always happy, I mean, she was smart as a whip, even at 101, Hamm, 33, told ABC News. She was funny and had lots of stories.
Camfield passed away Monday night at the age of 101.
The photo of her holding baby Kaylee is still being circulated all over Facebook, eventually landing on the page Life of Dad.
We were in complete shock that the picture took off like it did, said the co-founder of the blog, Patrick Quinn. When I posted it I thought a few of our fans would feel connected to it as I did. Then, within an hour, it was clear that I had underestimated the impact it would have with people as it was shared and liked hundreds of times per minute.
ABC News says the sweet photo now has over 2.5 million likes and 77,000 shares.

Outdated GPS directed driver off abandoned Indiana bridge, killing wife in 37-foot plunge
An out-of-town driver following his cars outdated GPS system drove off of a demolished Indiana bridge, killing his wife in the passenger seat, deputies said.
Iftikhar Hussain, 64, drove the couples 2014 Nissan Sentra off East Chicagos Cline Avenue bridge which closed in 2009 and is barricaded with bright orange barrels and cones. The car burst into flames after the 37-foot plunge into pavement below, The Times of Munster reported.
His wife, 51-year-old Zohra Hussain, died from burns, police said. Iftikhar Hussain was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injures.
Lake County deputies said Hussain was likely following directions from his GPS navigation system, which instructed him to turn onto a ramp to the now-demolished bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. The couple, from Chicago, was driving to visit family in Indiana and likely didnt know the area, said Lake County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Patricia Van Til.
While the road leading up to the bridge is marked with large signs that read road closed, orange barrels and other barricades, Hussain was likely paying more attention to his GPS than the road, deputies said.
