OSU researchers find seaweed that tastes like bacon

CORVALLIS, Ore. – It's rare that one food could satisfy your craving for pork products and clean eating, but this just might do it.

Oregon State University researchers discovered and patented a seaweed that when cooked, tastes like bacon. Yes, you read that right.

Dulse is a red marine algae that grows along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. Researchers say this patented strain of dulse grows quickly and is a super-food with twice the nutritional value of kale. It also contains 16 percent protein.

The strain looks like translucent red lettuce, and is also an excellent source of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, according to researcher Chris Langdon.

Several Portland-area chefs are testing new recipes with dulse.
