Rio 2016: Gabby Douglas’s Olympics experience fits the pattern of how we treat black female athletes

Rio 2016: Gabby Douglas’s Olympics experience fits the pattern of how we treat black female athletes

The hostile double standard that Gabby Douglas faces

Earlier this past week, there was a narrative that Douglas, who has represented the United States in two Olympics and devoted her life to these teams, is an unpatriotic, bad American.

The gist: Douglas didn’t put her hand over her heart when the national anthem was played during Team USA’s medal ceremony, and is therefore a terrible representative of America.

Here’s the double standard.

When the anthem was played during Michael Phelps’s medal ceremony for his win in the 200-meter butterfly, someone chanted "O!" — a tradition in Baltimore that celebrates the Baltimore Orioles (Phelps was born in the city). He began laughing, cracking up on the podium. Yet no one has accused Phelps of hating America.

Right now polls show Donald Trump losing every single swing state

Right now polls show Donald Trump losing every single swing state
Updated by Andrew Prokop @awprokop Aug 15, 2016, 1:50p

Donald Trump’s post-convention collapse has hurt him in the polls across the country. But it’s really hurt his numbers in some crucial swing states in particular — states that would be enough to give Hillary Clinton an Electoral College majority.

Now Trump is trailing in an average of post-convention poll results for every swing state from the past two cycles. That includes, of course, the traditional powerhouses of Florida and Ohio, where Clinton has taken single-digit leads.

But there are six states that have moved especially dramatically in Clinton’s direction.

Clinton Leads In Breitbart Poll Conducted As Rebuke To MSM Surveys

Clinton Leads In Breitbart Poll Conducted As Rebuke To MSM Surveys
ByALLEGRA KIRKLAND PublishedAUGUST 15, 2016, 10:29 AM EDT

Aiming to address a recent slew of “mainstream media” polls showing Hillary Clinton holding a decisive lead over of Donald Trump, Breitbart News conducted its own survey. But the conservative news site came up with similar results.

In a poll out Sunday from Breitbart and Gravis Marketing, Clinton led a four-way contest with 42 percent of the vote to Trump’s 37 percent. Libertarian Gary Johnson earned 9 percent of the vote, while the Green Party’s Jill Stein received 3 percent.

Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow explained in a statement accompanying the survey that the site would launch its own series of polls to provide “an accurate assessment” of the 2016 race.

Trump changed views on Ukraine after hiring Manafort

Trump changed views on Ukraine after hiring Manafort
Where once he demanded a tougher US response to Russian aggression, the GOP nominee now says he can live with a Russian Crimea.
By MICHAEL CROWLEY 8/3/16, 12:12 PM CET Updated 8/5/16, 8:52 AM CET

Donald Trump sounded like a supporter of Ukraine’s territorial integrity last September, when he spoke by video feed to a gathering of political and business elites in Kiev.

“Our president is not strong and he is not doing what he should be doing for the Ukraine,” Trump told he group of pro-Western businessmen, diplomats and politicians. “I don’t think you’re getting the support you need.”

That view was in line with other statements Trump has made calling for a firmer Western response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s March 2014 annexation of Crimea and support for a pro-Russian separatist movement in the country’s east, according to a review of Trump’s public comments about Ukraine since 2014.

In recent days, however, Trump has struck a far milder tone. He now says he might recognize Crimea as Russian territory and lift punitive U.S. sanctions against Russia. The alternative, he warned on Monday, could be World War III.

Ten years ago, Trump’s campaign manager warned of a rigged election — in Ukraine

Ten years ago, Trump’s campaign manager warned of a rigged election — in Ukraine
By Philip Bump August 15 at 12:29 PM

"The only way" Hillary Clinton can win in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump said at a rally in that state on Friday evening, "and I mean this 100 percent -- [is] if in certain sections of the state they cheat, OK?" That was "the way we can lose the state," he said, of a state where he currently trails by 9 points. "And we have to call up law enforcement. And we have to have the sheriffs and the police chiefs and everybody watching." On Saturday, his campaign unveiled an effort to somehow formalize the campaign's fraud-prevention system, encouraging sign-ups on their website for "Trump Election Observers."

There's no demonstrated in-person voter fraud problem in Pennsylvania (or anywhere else, for that matter), and it's not clear if Trump's fraud-prevention effort is simply an attempt to collect voter contact information and boost GOP voter enthusiasm, or if it's actually meant to combat a problem that doesn't exist. But it's not surprising that this is a part of Trump's campaign in one sense: When Trump's campaign director Paul Manafort was helping to coordinate the campaign effort of a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine in 2006, he used similar tools and rhetoric.

Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief

Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief
By ANDREW E. KRAMER, MIKE McINTIRE and BARRY MEIERAUG. 14, 2016

KIEV, Ukraine — On a leafy side street off Independence Square in Kiev is an office used for years by Donald J. Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, when he consulted for Ukraine’s ruling political party. His furniture and personal items were still there as recently as May.

And Mr. Manafort’s presence remains elsewhere here in the capital, where government investigators examining secret records have found his name, as well as companies he sought business with, as they try to untangle a corrupt network they say was used to loot Ukrainian assets and influence elections during the administration of Mr. Manafort’s main client, former President Viktor F. Yanukovych.

Handwritten ledgers show $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments designated for Mr. Manafort from Mr. Yanukovych’s pro-Russian political party from 2007 to 2012, according to Ukraine’s newly formed National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Investigators assert that the disbursements were part of an illegal off-the-books system whose recipients also included election officials.

Trump May Be Boon for Down-Ballot Dems, LGBT Rights in Arizona, Georgia

Trump May Be Boon for Down-Ballot Dems, LGBT Rights in Arizona, Georgia
by JULIE MOREAU, PH.D.

The Clinton campaign announced this week it no longer considers states like Virginia to be battlegrounds in the presidential election. The latest polls show Trump trailing enough that her campaign is diverting staff to Arizona and Georgia, typically considered to be safely red states.

With the exception of Bill Clinton in 1996, Arizona has voted for Republican presidential candidates since the 1950s, and Georgia has been reliably red for the past two decades. However, with additional resources, their 27 combined electoral votes could help make the difference for Clinton. And Clinton's strategic maneuver could also be a boon for Democrats in down-ballot races in these states.

RNC considers cutting cash to Trump

RNC considers cutting cash to Trump
GOP officials lay the groundwork to blame their nominee if Clinton wins.
By ELI STOKOLS and KENNETH P. VOGEL 08/14/16 07:29 AM EDT

Publicly, Republican Party officials continue to stand by Donald Trump. Privately, at the highest levels, party leaders have started talking about cutting off support to Trump in October and redirecting cash to save endangered congressional majorities.

Since the Cleveland convention, top party officials have been quietly making the case to political journalists, donors and GOP operatives that the Republican National Committee has done more to help Trump than it did to support its 2012 nominee Mitt Romney, and that therefore Trump has only himself and his campaign to blame for his precipitous slide in the polls, according to people who have spoken with Republican leadership.

How Democrats could win the House: With lots of help — and almost no mistakes

How Democrats could win the House: With lots of help — and almost no mistakes
By Aaron Blake August 13

As the polls keep getting worse for Donald Trump, the math keeps getting better for Democrats' efforts to retake the Senate.

And maybe even the House?

The conventional wisdom for years has been that it will be very tough for Democrats to retake the House this decade, if not impossible, and that's still the widely held belief even in the Year of Trump. But smart longtime Democratic House strategist Mark Gersh laid out his case this week for how it could be done, district by district, and argued that it's increasingly possible — while still quite difficult.
