I suspect that many of the arguments resulting from the use of certain terms are arising from the *capacity* to have these arguments rather than any strong emotional investment in using said terms.
I don't think there would be anywhere near as much complaint from the "I'll say what I like" crowd if there were admins actually hiding such posts. I think it's the fact that there's a jury system that's causing the row, not the importance of the subject of the row. I can't really get behind the idea that it's very important we're allowed to use words that are used solely to cause bad feeling. I can't really believe that someone really, really *needs* to use the word "bitch", or "tranny", or any of the other terms that have caused so much discussion lately.
So, to those who would prefer to carry on using terms that others may find offensive, I'd like to suggest this - maybe you could say the same thing in other ways?
As a newly converted member of the "word police"...

under the left-most column "replies to me" as a "1"?
If someone is on your ignore list and they respond to you, do they show up in "my posts"
under the left-most column "replies to me" as a "1"?

I've only just seen this (posted on Youtube Sept 2011) and I have NO idea what to make of it.
I think it's racist. But she's complaining about sexism! Should I be concerned that she's complaining about sexism (totally her right) but being racist in the process? Is she "ALLOWED" to make such generalisations because of her own skin colour?
There seem to be a number of these videos on Youtube and I had no idea they were there.
I suppose it serves me right for following up Youtube video recommendations.
I just think it's weird. I have no idea how to react to it.
PS - just in case - I'm not trying to be inflammatory!
Can someone explain this to me? Is it racist?

There have been numerous examples of jurors using the anonymity to stage personal attacks and I'm not sure if there is a process to mitigate against it. I post from ignorance!
Is there a defined sanction against jurors abusing the anonymity of jury service?

If you got Raptured, what would your sound effect be?
I'm swithering between "eeeOOOeeeeOOOeeeeOOOOeee" and sparkliness a la Star Trek and "Ba TWOOIIIIING!!" like twanging a ruler on the edge of a desk. Imagine that shooting up into the sky! Wheeee!
The church has seriously missed a publicity goldmine here. Ya know, it would be like the Christianity equivalent of ringtones.
Rapture tones!

At home after school, having trudged through the snow, sitting down to hot chocolate and watching Ivor the Engine. A very British tradition. Well, for me. They put the same episodes on every year! A tiny, badly animated, friendly, not particularly exciting television programme lasting no more than 10 minutes per episode full of soft Welsh accents and snow. So I thought I would share it with you as I am feeling very warm and cuddly and nostalgic and snowy.
Merry Christmas... XXX
Snow was falling in the top left hand corner of Wales....
This time of year always brings to mind my childhood and all the things on TV I used to watch when I was very little. I remembered the show that the link below takes you to...
