Congress Pushes To Expand Marijuana Research

Congress asks the head of Health and Human Services to do away with an additional review process required only for those hoping to study marijuanas medicinal effects.
Thirty members of Congress signed a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell on Tuesday, asking that she make the process of obtaining federally-grown marijuana for medicinal research less burdensome for U.S. scientists.
Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia have passed laws allowing for the use of medical marijuana, the letter said. Over one million Americans currently use medical marijuana at the recommendation of their physician. There is overwhelming anecdotal evidence from patients, their family members, and their doctors of the therapeutic benefits of marijuana for those suffering from cancer, epilepsy, seizures, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, glaucoma, anxiety, chronic pain, and more.
We believe the widespread use of medical marijuana should necessitate research into what specific relief it offers and how it can best be delivered for different people and different conditions. Yet, the scientific research clearly documenting these benefits has often been hampered by federal barriers.
Since May 21, 1999, scientists interested in conducting research on marijuanas medicinal values must undergo two review processes if their study is not funded by the National Institutes of Health. In addition to the review process that applies to other Schedule I substances such as LSD, psilocybin and MDMA, researchers must also complete an additional review process before they can be given access to marijuana grown in the United States by the federal government for research purposes.

Susan B. Anthonys court trial began today in 1873 she had been arrested for voting in the previous Novembers election. Although the trial would lead to a conviction, Anthony refused to pay the fine she was sentenced to; authorities decided not to pursue further legal action.

James Taylor and Carly Simon To Reunite!
Inside word from Late Night With David Letterman is that for one of the final shows for Big Dave, Carly Simon and James Taylor will stage a very unexpected yet highly anticipated reunion (first in well over 30 years) to sing their big hit duet Mockingbird, which was itself a cover version of the 1963 hit by Inez and Charlie Foxx. Mockingbird is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, when Carly Simon released it as a single from her Hotcakes album, where she was seen in all white with pregnant tummy (son Ben Taylor) on the LP cover.
Sonny and Cher appeared on the Letterman show in a famous reunion and they sang I Got You Babe for adoring fans. Now, its Simon and Taylors turn to do a solid for their friend Dave. The reunion was actually orchestrated by super sax man David Sanborn (himself a former regular in Letternmans band) who played on the original record Mockingbird as well. #SetYourTivo

You are better off, MissMillie. Dude was cruising from the get go.
on edit:
you can not use sincere words while simultaneously doing an insincere act. It negates itself and makes a liar out of the person doing it.
I never thought that I would see the Human Rights issue made fun of on DU.
A world wide effort to ensure that all people be treated decently and fairly with dignity and respect.
Human rights are basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, race, religion, language, or other status.
Human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life, liberty and freedom of expression; and social, cultural and economic rights including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, and the right to work and receive an education. Human rights are protected and upheld by international and national laws and treaties.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the foundation of the international system of protection for human rights. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10th, 1948. This day is celebrated annually as International Human Rights Day. The 30 articles of the UDHR establish the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of all people. It is a vision for human dignity that transcends political boundaries and authority, committing governments to uphold the fundamental rights of each person. The UDHR helps guide Amnesty International's work.
We also use these principles to help us define human rights and the issues we relentlessly fight for.
