David Kessler: Fat, Salt and Sugar Alter Brain Chemistry, Make Us Eat Junk Food

David Kessler researched part of "The End of Overeating" by diving into dumpsters behind restaurants to look for the nutritional labels of menu items high in fat, salt and sugar. (By Eric Risberg -- Associated Press)

The former head of the FDA says certain foods alter brain chemistry in ways that compel people to overeat. (By Christina Koci Hernandez For The Washington Post)

He went in the middle of the night, long after the last employee had locked up the Chili's Grill and Bar. He'd steer his car around the back, check to make sure no one was around and then quietly approach the dumpster.

If anyone noticed the man foraging through the trash, they would have assumed he was a vagrant. Except he was wearing black dress slacks and padded gardening gloves. "I'm surprised he didn't wear a tie," his wife said dryly.

The high-octane career path of David A. Kessler, the Harvard-trained doctor, lawyer, medical school dean and former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration had come to this: nocturnal dumpster diving. Sometimes, he would just reach in. Other times, he would climb in.

It took many of these forays until Kessler emerged with his prize: ingredient labels affixed to empty cardboard boxes that spelled out the fats, salt and sugar used to make the Southwestern Eggrolls, Boneless Shanghai Wings and other dishes served by the nation's second-largest restaurant chain.

Kessler was on a mission to understand a problem that has vexed him since childhood: why he can't resist certain foods.

Sarah Palin: Fox News Canceled My Appearances

Source: Huffington Post

What's going on between Sarah Palin and Fox News?

The former vice-presidential nominee famously signed a huge contract with the network back in 2010, and she was once one of its marquee faces. On Wednesday, though, Palin let the world know that Fox News had canceled big-time on her for the whole evening. Notably, Wednesday is the night that Paul Ryan, the current Republican nominee for vice president, is slated to speak -- making it rather odd that Fox News would not want to hear the last nominee's perspective on the event. Palin was interviewed on Monday and then very briefly on Tuesday night.

Palin made no mention of Ryan in her Facebook post, though. Instead, she said she was miffed that she wasn't getting a chance to laud John McCain, who is also speaking tonight. She posted a picture of the two of them, along with a statement:

I'm sorry Fox cancelled all my scheduled interviews tonight because I sure wanted to take the opportunity on the air to highlight Senator John McCain's positive contributions to America, to honor him, and to reflect on what a biased media unfairly put him through four years ago tonight. Granted, our honored and esteemed war hero has gone through much more than the liberal media can ever do to him in their efforts to harm this patriot. I look forward to hearing his words to his fellow Americans tonight more than any of the other convention speeches. God bless John McCain. Thank you for everything. And happy birthday, my friend.

What to do to prevent West Nile Virus...

In Illinois in 2002, there were over 800 cases and over 60 deaths. I read up on it then, and here is what are the safest precautions for you, your friends, and family..(in my opinion)

1. Most mosquito bites occur 2 hours before and after sunrise and sunset. (their DNA is set to bite at that time, cause..that is when animals are most likely to be out and grazing..and standing still)
2. When the sun is out, in the middle of the day, and it is high in the sky, it is safer.
3. If you are going to be out for long periods of time, wear a long sleave top or shirt, spray that top or shirt with insectiside that covers most of the top or shirt.
4. Wear jeans or very thick long pants spray the pants too.
5. Now, your hands are exposed, and face..put a little on the hands work it in, then a little on the
face..I said little, and use it sparingly..it is poison...
6 Especially take these precautions if you are going to be out for long periods of time around sunset....and sitting still...why? that is when they are out..(like at an eve barbaque)
7. Most cases are very mild, and most people don't notice
8. Add a hat, and spray the hat too.
9. This may make you look odd, on a very hot or warm day, but you would probably,,,note I said probably,
would be protected from mosquitos. Your chances of getting bitten , or your friends or family will be greatly reduced...
10.. If you, your friends and family have an immmune system that is stressed out, you are more likely
to be affected seriously.

Romney admits big business knows, ...".how to get through the tax code.."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/08/mitts_latest_revealing_moment_--_non-birther_editi.php?ref=fpblg

read this short article where Romney talks about putting assents overseas...

“We’ve got to make it easier for small businesses,” Romney said. “Big business is doing fine in many places — they get the loans they need, they can deal with all the regulation.”

Many took notice because Romney used the same phrasing President Obama did several weeks ago, when Republicans jumped all over him for saying the private sector is doing fine. But the revealing bit came afterwards.

“They know how to find ways to get through the tax code, save money by putting various things in the places where there are low tax havens around the world for their businesses,” Romney added. “But small business is getting crushed.”

The irony here, obviously, is that Romney’s acknowledging that big businesses have succeeded financially, despite the bad economy, because they use the same sort of tax avoidance strategies that have made his own tax returns such a political liability. But his tax plan would actually be a big boon to large, incumbent businesses. Romney’s proposing to transition the country to a territorial tax system, under which companies would pay no U.S. taxes on foreign earnings.

As liberal economist Dean Baker explains, that would only end tax havening in as much as big businesses wouldn’t need havens to avoid the IRS — and it would create an incentive for them to set up shop in any cheap, low-tax countries that would welcome them.

It looks like Romney in this speech is justifying exactly what he did: take extreme advantage of the tax code to evade almost all
taxes...like GE.

Raising the Minimum Wage Essentially Helps Women: Think Progress

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/08/17/708511/study-raising-minimum-wage-women/

By Tara Culp-Ressler on Aug 17, 2012 at 4:30 pm

A group of House Democrats are seeking to increase the minimum wage to $9.80 per hour in order to help shrink the ever-increasing gap between the wealthiest Americans and struggling workers. This modest increase to the current $7.25 per hour would help catch the wage up to the rate of inflation, since the buying power of the 1968 minimum wage is the equivalent of about $10.55 an hour today.

A new report from the Economic Policy Institute finds that, while raising the minimum wage to the proposed $9.80 level would have a significant impact on about 28 million low-income workers, it would especially benefit women. As the report puts it, the fact that “women comprise 54.5 percent of workers who would be affected by a potential minimum-wage increase makes it a women’s issue”:

Mosque in Morton Grove, Chicago
On Friday night, there were two pellet-gun shots on a mosque in the Chicago suburb Morton Grove. No one was injured, and 51-year-old David Conrad has been charged for shooting on the outer wall of the building as people prayed inside.

This was just days after Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) delivered a town hall speech on the “real threat” of radical Muslims in the U.S. “trying to kill Americans every week.” Walsh made these comments just 15 miles from Morton Grove mosque:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I had heard about this one on the radio...but I didn't realize that it was one half mile from where I live..maybe less as a bird flys..
Kinda sad...some waco goes off, and someone fires a pellet gun into the mosque ..We live in a totally mixed community, everyone from everywhere lives in this area.. I am really very very grateful that it was just a pelet gun.. no one was hurt but it was on purpose. I heard the guy was a neigbor and didn't like that the mosque was adding on to its building..no, I don't know if that is the truth...but
Joe Walsh can go to hell with the others..

We are so euphoric about these idiots..Let us think again.. Reagan was an idiot too.

Being overconfident is a mistake we cannot make. Under 100 days left, anything can happen, and we need to be prepared that
these people will be playing very very dirty. Because they will. We ain't seen nothing yet....They are awful, mean, and vicious beyond belief.

Republican Official (in Pennsylvania) : People with Obama Stickers are 'Mentally Retarded'

Talking Points Memo:
http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/08/08/655801/obama-sticker-mentally-retarded/

Republican Official: People With Obama Bumper Stickers Are ‘Mentally Retarded’ | At an election party last night, Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County GOP Chair, Jim Roddey, brought the crowd to laughter and applause by calling an Obama supporter “mentally retarded.” Roddey, who is a long-time supporter of Mitt Romney, told the joke to a crowd of about 200: “I was very embarrassed. I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly — he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, ‘Sir, here’s a place.’ And he said, ‘That’s a handicapped space.’ I said, ‘Oh I’m so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded.’”

I don't think you can make this stuff up..
that is a term that is not used anymore.
