Judge blames Army Corps of Engineers for Midwestern flooding

.
A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the Army Corps of Engineers was responsible for recurring flooding in four states that caused more than $300 million in damages.

The ruling by Judge Nancy Firestone states that flooding in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa "was caused by and was the foreseeable result" of the Army Corps of Engineers' management of the Missouri River, The Associated Press reported.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed in 2014 that argued that the Corps deprived people of their land without compensation, and that, beginning in 2004, the Corps began putting more emphasis on restoring ecosystems for threatened and endangered species.

In turn, the lawsuit argued, the Corps focused less on the issue of flood control.

President Trump reportedly mocked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for his "mannerisms and Texas drawl."

Trump called Tillerson - who was ousted from his role Tuesday - "weak" and talked with friends and advisers about people he thought would be better suited for the job at the State Department, The Washington Post reported.

Trump was also critical of the bad press Tillerson received, according to the Post.

"This guy never gets a good story about him," Trump said, a source told the newspaper

.
Democratic leaders in the House and Senate exited the Capitol on Wednesday to march with and speak to students protesting gun violence on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.

Senior members of Democratic leadership joined other lawmakers from the House and Senate on Capitol Hill as thousands of students marched while others around the country walked out of classes or staged other protests.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) both spoke to the demonstrators, while other Democrats such as Sen. Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Rep. Ted Deutch (Fla.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.) were spotted in the crowd.

"[We are] representing in Congress the students who have sacrificed so much, spoken so eloquently, commanded the attention of the nation," Pelosi told the crowd. "We are all moved by your eloquence and fearless insistence on action to prevent gun violence."

Trump compares illegal border-crossers to 'professional mountain climbers

Source: The HILL

.
President Trump said during a visit to San Diego on Tuesday that he needs his proposed border wall with Mexico to be a tough physical obstacle, as those seeking to enter the U.S. illegally are "incredible climbers."

"Getting over the top is easy. These are like professional mountain climbers, they're incredible climbers. They can't climb some of these walls," Trump told reporters during a tour of border wall prototypes.

Trump viewed eight such prototypes during his California visit and noted that a wall with "see-through capability" would be beneficial in combating cartels.

"You have to know what's on the other side of the wall," Trump said. "You could be two feet away from a criminal cartel and don't even know they're there. Now we have equipment to take care of that, X-ray equipment, etc

.
The FBI has tried to meet with two self-proclaimed "sex coaches" held in a Thai jail who claim to have information about Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 election, CNN reported Tuesday.

FBI agents contacted Thailand's Immigration Bureau last week to try to set up a meeting with Anastasia Vashukevich and Alexander Kirillov, both Belarusian citizens, CNN reported, citing a high-level Thai official.

Thai officials turned down that request, however, because only the detainees' lawyers and family members are permitted access to them.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok referred CNN's questions about the matter to Thai law enforcement.

Clinton: I won places moving forward, Trump won places moving backward

Source: The HILL

https://twitter.com/thehill/status/973537424755355648
.
Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton took broad swipes at Trump voters on Saturday, blaming poorer areas of the United States for her 2016 election defeat to President Trump.

At the India Today Conclave 2018 in Mumbai, Clinton told a crowd that the states she won represented a higher gross domestic product than the areas won by Trump.

"If you look at the map of the United States, there's all that red in the middle where Trump won," Clinton said. "I win the coast, I win, you know, Illinois and Minnesota, places like that."

"I won the places that represent two-thirds of America's gross domestic product," she continued. "So I won the places that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward. And his whole campaign, 'Make America Great Again,' was looking backwards."

Gayle Manchin has been fired from her position as the secretary of the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.

The dismissal comes after Manchin - the wife of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) - released a statement asking for West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) to save the agency, Politico reported.

Justice had been considering signing a bill that would close the agency.

In a press release, Justice - who was previously a Democrat and became a member of the Republican Party last year - said that Gayle Manchin had released a press release on the issue despite being instructed not to.

GOP seeks to stave off big Dem upset

Source: The HILL

https://twitter.com/thehill/status/973529363642765313
.
Republicans are rushing to avoid a crushing defeat on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, where a Democrat looks poised to win an upset special election victory deep in Trump country six months before the midterm elections.

President Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., traveled to the district Monday in an attempt to boost Republican House candidate Rick Saccone, while Democrat Conor Lamb spent the last days before the election rallying the union workers who are seen as key to his victory.

Trump Jr.'s appearance at two Saccone events Monday is indicative of the GOP's all-out effort to hang on to the district. President Trump held a rally nearby over the weekend, a handful of key administration officials have visited the district in recent weeks and Republican outside groups have dropped more than $10 million into the district.

But the latest polls show Lamb closing in on Saccone - or even passing him. Trump won the district by 20 points in 2016, but a new Monmouth poll released Monday showed Lamb leading.
