Bernie Sanders’s Campaign Says He Would SIT OUT Unsanctioned Debate

Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager for Senator Bernie Sanders, said on Tuesday evening that Mr. Sanders did not want to participate in an unsanctioned debate next month because he could risk being denied participation in future debates. The debate would be held Feb. 4 in New Hampshire, five days before the state’s primary. It would be sponsored by MSNBC and The New Hampshire Union Leader, which announced that the “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd and the MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow would moderate the debate.

The Democratic National Committee has “said this will be an unsanctioned debate, so we would not want to jeopardize our ability to participate in future debates,” Mr. Weaver said. He added that if the Democratic National Committee did sanction the debate, the campaign’s stance would be different. Jen Palmieri, a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, told The Union Leader, “Hillary Clinton would be happy to participate in a debate in New Hampshire if the other candidates agree, which would allow the D.N.C. to sanction the debate.”

John Bivona, a spokesman for the candidate Martin O’Malley, the former Maryland governor, told the paper: “Today is a big victory not only for our campaign and our supporters that championed this effort, but it is also a victory for voters across New Hampshire and the United States. We look forward to participating.” Mr. Weaver, the Sanders campaign manager, said that what is needed “is a rational, thought-out schedule of debates. Not just ad hoc debates scheduled whenever a network decides they want to have one.”

Katrina vandal Heuvel: Bernie Sanders Is The Realist WE SHOULD ELECT

~snip~

For example, foreign policy is considered Clinton’s strength. When terrorism hits the headlines, she gains in the polls. Yet the worst calamity in U.S. foreign policy since Vietnam surely was George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq. Clinton voted for that war; Sanders got it right and voted against. Clinton has since admitted her vote was a “mistake” but seems to have learned little from that grievous misjudgment. As secretary of state, she championed regime change in Libya that left behind another failed state rapidly becoming a backup base for the Islamic State. She pushed for toppling Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war and lobbied for arming the Syrian opposition, a program that ended up supplying more weapons to the Islamic State than to anyone else. Now she touts a “no fly zone” in Syria, an idea that has been dismissed by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as requiring some 70,000 troops to enforce, and by President Obama as well. People thinking with their heads rather than their hearts might well prefer Sanders’s skepticism about regime change to Clinton’s hawkishness.

~snip~

In the face of the Sanders surge, Clinton supporters have resorted to the “electability argument”: that Sanders can’t be elected because he’s too far left. Put aside the irony of Clinton dismissing the electoral viability of someone she might lose to. Clinton has inevitable baggage of her own that raises doubts about her electoral prospects. And Clinton’s decision to present herself as the candidate of continuity in a time of change is problematic. In contrast, the positions Sanders champions — Medicare for All, cleaning up politics, curbing Wall Street, a less-interventionist foreign policy, rebuilding the United States, tuition-free college, fair taxes for the rich and corporations — are all extremely popular. Furthermore, Democrats have a natural electoral majority if they turn out. Even the Clinton campaign worries about her ability to rouse the young and people of color as Obama did. In contrast, Sanders has clearly electrified millennials with his message and integrity. A voter using his head rather than his heart might well be conflicted on the question of electability.

Clinton’s closing ad before Iowa makes her central argument clear: Trust her. She’s experienced and committed. She’ll keep Republicans from taking away the progress we’ve made. Sanders’s ad makes his argument clear: Trust yourself. Come together, take back the country and make this nation better. The first appeals to the head; the latter to the heart. But even the most hard-headed pragmatist might think the latter has as good a chance at getting elected and a better chance of forcing change than the former.

KEY UNIONS Campaigning Hard to Push Bernie Sanders to Victory in Iowa

Though only 10 percent of Iowa’s workforce are union members, local shops from nationwide unions that have endorsed Bernie Sanders for president are hoping to sway other working-class voters who will attend next Monday’s Iowa caucuses. While Hillary Clinton has been endorsed by more national unions than Sanders has, LaborRadio.org has noted that Sanders’ supporters in Iowa are unusually energized—including from unions that haven’t formally endorsed a presidential candidate.

“Unions like CWA [Communication Workers of America] and the United Postal Workers, which have endorsed Bernie, are… getting out the labor vote,” says the report. But “some unions, like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, have chosen not to endorse a candidate yet. Mike Olson serves as registrar for IBEW Local 405. He notes that among his members... 'Bernie Sanders seems to be getting their support.’”

That observation is not unique. Last fall, the Des Moines Register reported that both Sanders and Martin O’Malley were connecting with more union members than Clinton, quoting Ken Sagar, president of the AFL-CIO-affiliated Iowa Federation of Labor. “I think Secretary Clinton has a job before her to fire up the troops, so to speak,” he said. On Tuesday morning, Sanders will appear at CWA headquarters in Des Moines for a “Labor Meeting with Bernie Sanders” and then participate in “caucus training” events with other unions that will include a “mock caucus.” That goes beyond traditional union phone banking and get-out-the-vote efforts.

National Nurses United sent its bright red political tour bus to Iowa emblazoned with “Nurses Say Bernie for President” on its side, and has been holding organizing events with speakers like well-known commentator Jim Hightower and Chris Shelton, CWA’s national union president, “to remind voters of reasons why Sen. Bernie Sanders best reflects the values of nurses, workers, and community residents.” Speaking at one rally, NNU co-president Jean Ross said endorsing Sanders was “very easy for us. Our values of caring, compassion and community are his values.” She then touted the latest news from the campaign, saying his “Medicare for all plan” was achievable.

The Postal Workers’ union leaders in Iowa sent a letter to all members urging them to caucus and saying why they “encouraged” backing Sanders. “When we judge candidates for what they do—not by what they say and not by their labels—Senator Bernie Sanders stands head and shoulders above any other,” they wrote. They said Sanders has fought to keep local post offices open, restore overnight delivery, oppose postal service privatization and many other issues important to union members.

“Bernie has a strong record of standing with workers on picket lines, fighting for a $15 per hour minimum wage, endorsing free public college tuition, advocating for veterans benefits, defending Social Security, promoting ‘Medicare for All,’ and opposing rotten trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP),” they wrote last week.

While Clinton has more nationwide union endorsements, her supporters tend to be more labor leaders and officials and fewer rank-and-file members who are drawn to Sanders’ passion, the Des Moines Register reported.

Former Hillary Clinton Aide: Blame 'JERK' Bill, Not Hillary For AFFAIRS

For the better part of the past month, Donald Trump has hit Hillary Clinton for playing the "woman's card" in her attacks against him, frequently mentioning her husband's past affairs in an attempt to discredit her argument that she would be a champion for women in the White House. For one of Clinton's closest senior advisers as first lady, however, those arguments ring hollow.

“Here’s what I think about that: I think what Bill Clinton did in terms of infidelity was absolutely horrible. A shitty thing to do," Patti Solis Doyle told David Axelrod in the latest episode of his "The Axe Files" podcast for the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, where she is a resident fellow this winter.

Remarking again what a "shitty thing" it was "to do to her," Solis Doyle emphasized that it was the president, not his wife, who acted wrongly.

"It was awful. You know, many of us thought about quitting after what he did," she revealed. "But when we thought about it — when I thought about it — I thought, she didn’t do anything. He is the jerk here."

Solis Doyle surmised at another point that Axelrod was alluding to a comment in private correspondence in which Clinton wrote to a friend that Monica Lewinsky was a "narcissistic loony toon."

"It’s not like she went on television or said it publicly. She didn’t say anything publicly about any of the .... And, you know, as a woman, if my husband were having some sort of extramarital affair with another woman, I’m sure I wouldn’t have very nice things to say about that woman either. I mean, that’s just normal," she added. "But she never said anything publicly. And I think it’s its own form of sexism to somehow blame the spouse for what the husband did. I think that’s its own form of sexism.”

A FUTURE To BELIEVE

PRESS RELEASE

A Future to Believe In

JANUARY 25, 2016

DES MOINES, Iowa – Making a closing case before Iowa’s caucuses, Bernie Sanders presents his vision of an economy and political system that works for all Americans, not just the 1 percent. “There are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy,” Sanders says in the spot set to begin airing in the Hawkeye State on Tuesday.

“But I believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place – and look to the American horizon,” he continues. “To a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college – but attend one. Where quality health care will be a birthright of every citizen. Where a good job is not a wish but a reality. Where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all. An America where after a lifetime of labor there is time for rest and grandchildren. A nation that defends our people and our values but no longer carries so much of that burden alone.”

Sanders has released comprehensive policy proposals to confront the problems facing the nation. He has detailed plans to make public colleges and universities tuition free, expand health care to all Americans, put 13 million Americans to work in good-paying jobs rebuilding the country’s crumbling roads and bridges, pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, raise the minimum wage to a living wage, expand social security and defeat the Islamic State while avoiding perpetual warfare in the Middle East.

“I know we can create that America if we listen to our hearts. And that journey begins here in Iowa,” Sanders concludes.

Hillary Clinton Campaign Playing Politics with GUNS, Just Like in 2008

PRESS RELEASE

Clinton Campaign Playing Politics with Guns, Just Like in 2008

JANUARY 25TH, 2016

GRINNELL, Iowa – Hillary Clinton’s campaign is hiding her latest position on guns from voters in Iowa, an Associated Press analysis revealed.

The Clinton campaign has painted their candidate as a fearless advocate for gun safety legislation but, according to the AP analysis, the campaign is downplaying a television ad on gun control in Iowa and in some rural parts of the state the ad hasn’t been shown at all.

This latest revelation re-focuses attention on Secretary Clinton’s often changing views on gun safety legislation over the years.

In 2000, Secretary Clinton supported registering all handgun purchases or transfers and licensing every gun owner who purchases a weapon.

In 2008,
" target="_blank">she reversed that position and criticized gun safety legislation at the federal level. She also attacked then-Sen. Oama as being too tough on gun safety. Her posturing in that campaign prompted Obama’s famous statement that she sounded like “Annie Oakley.” The 2008 Clinton campaign sent out a mailer attacking then-Senator Obama, a mailer that was subsequently used by the NRA to echo those attacks in October 2008.

In the 2016 campaign, she has now moved back to calling for more gun control but apparently is downplaying her views in Iowa for tactical advantage.

Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager said, “When you really believe an issue is important you don’t hide it from voters in one state to gain political advantage. This is exactly what is wrong with the political process. It’s no secret that Secretary Clinton has repeatedly changed her views on gun safety from one election to another. Now we see the Clinton campaign is gaming its message from one state to the other within the 2016 election. “

The AP analysis can be found here.

The story about the NRA’s use of Clinton material to attack then-Senator Obama can be found here.

Top Bernie Sanders Surrogate FIRES BACK At Obama

One of Bernie Sanders' top advisers fired back at President Barack Obama's remarks about the state of the 2016 presidential race, saying that the president's characterization to POLITICO that Hillary Clinton stands at a disadvantage in contrast to a "bright, shiny object that people ... haven't seen before" sounds awfully familiar.

"Well, I think that’s the parallel to his own journey eight years ago, and I was actually supporting him then, that he offered hope," senior campaign adviser Larry Cohen, a former labor leader, told CNN. "And I think Bernie and actually all of the Democratic candidates are about a positive vision of the future. Bernie’s is about change, not just continuity in the similar way that then-Senator Obama was talking about change. And Bernie’s talking about, why can’t we have higher education that doesn’t leave our kids burdened with ridiculous debt? And why can’t we have Medicare for all? And why can’t we, even though the path would be difficult, imagine a country where people are working and they’re looking forward to a better America."

Cohen remarked that in selecting her as secretary of state, the president "made a political decision after that election to unite with that part of the Democratic Party."

"And I would say to him, with all due respect, Mr. President, the same kind of change that you had hoped to work for, Bernie is trying to continue on that path, not go back to the 1990s of President Clinton," he said.

Cohen agreed at minimum with the CNN anchors' conclusion that Obama's interview amounted to praise of Clinton at Sanders' expense.

Bernie Sanders BLASTS Corporate Deserters

PRESS RELEASE

Sanders Blasts Corporate Deserters

JANUARY 25TH, 2016

AMES, Iowa – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday denounced “corporate deserters” after Johnson Controls and Tyco International announced a plan to merge the manufacturing giants in the latest example of a U.S.-based company acquiring a foreign firm to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

“The potential Johnson-Tyco merger would be a disaster for American taxpayers,” Sanders said. “Profitable companies that have received corporate welfare from American taxpayers should not be allowed to renounce their U.S. citizenship to avoid paying U.S. taxes. These corporate inversions must stop.

“My message to these corporate deserters is simple: You can’t be an American company only when you want corporate welfare from American taxpayers or you want lucrative contracts from the federal government,” Sanders continued. “If you want the advantages of being an American company then you can’t run away from America to avoid paying taxes.”

Sanders last year introduced the Corporate Tax Dodging Prevention Act. It would end the inversion tax scam by treating corporations as American corporations for tax purposes when it is still majority owned by U.S. interests.

In November, Sanders called on the Obama administration and Congress to stop a similar deal involving Pfizer and Allergan that would lead to higher prescription drug prices. “The Pfizer-Allergan merger would be a disaster for American consumers who already pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs,” Sanders said at the time. “It also would allow another major American corporation to hide its profits overseas.”

Sanders’ Senate bill also would also stop corporations from avoiding $100 billion in taxes a year by stashing their profits in the Cayman Islands and other offshore tax havens.
