In what one analyst sees as "a really bad mistake," Hillary Clinton declined to participate in a presidential forum hosted by the 8 million-strong organization MoveOn.org. Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley did take part in the virtual event in which they answered questions on issues ranging from campaign finance reform to climate change to the Syrian refugee crisis. Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, said last month that the forum would "help Democratic candidates engage with millions of progressive Americans who constitute an influential part of the party’s base and who will play a significant role in the coming primaries and caucuses." That's a point noted by Democratic strategist Mike Lux, who told MSNBC that Clinton's missing the event was "a really bad mistake."
But Clinton's opting out of the forum may come as no surprise. As Common Dreams reported last week:
A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday found that Clinton has the support of 51 percent of Iowa Democratic caucus-goers, compared to Sanders' 42 percent.

"She missed an opportunity to speak directly to and energize the progressive base she’ll need in her corner not just to win the nomination but also the general election, if she is the party's nominee."

Sanders, the Vermont senator and Democratic socialist, released a detailed immigration plan on Tuesday in which he promised that undocumented immigrants won’t be deported if they’ve been in the U.S. for at least five years — a move that would protect 9 million people. He vowed to close privately run immigration detain centers, end programs that give local law enforcement some of the power of federal immigration officials and expand efforts to give the children of undocumented immigrants legal status.

“We have seen large numbers of our community thrown behind bars as immigrants have been harshly criminalized, often for something as minor as a traffic ticket in jurisdictions where local police enforce federal immigration law,” said Hina Naveed, co-director of the Dream Action Coalition, an immigration reform advocacy group. “Sanders would end the expensive contracts we have with immigrant detention centers, as well as the highly controversial bed quota that guarantees them business at all of our expense. These are large points of difference and will have a huge impact on the day-to-day lives of diverse, mixed-status families.”

Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) released a sweeping immigration policy paper on Tuesday that pushed for pro-immigration policies that are arguably more ambitious than those proposed months ago by rival candidate and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. Hands down, the plan in more progressive, and more specific than former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton’s positions on immigration. Below, we list the 20 reasons why, starting with the fact that Sander’s new document is far more detailed than any of Clinton’s statements.
To be clear, these aren’t all actions that Clinton has refused to take. Plus, there’s no guarantee that Sanders could even execute this ambitious set of policies. At first glance, his legislative immigration agenda appears to leave little room for compromise with conservatives, demanding even less concessions from Republicans than the 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill that failed to make it to the floor of the House. Still, Sanders is pledging to address immigration during his first 100 days in office if elected, and he’s provided specific promises on executive actions that he would take, with or without a vote from Congress. Like Clinton, he has said he would “go further” than sitting president Barack Obama. In this new proposal, he’s specified where “further” is.
The announcement comes at a time when Sanders and Clinton are gearing up for a primary fight in February and March in heavily Latino swing states like Nevada and Colorado. Clinton currently holds a solid lead in both polls and organizing power in those states. Both candidates have pledged for fight for comprehensive immigration reform, vowed to make immigration enforcement more humane and rejected Republican policies that would make border enforcement a precondition to finding a legal pathway for the country’s estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants.
A Plan
1) First and foremost, Sanders now has a more detailed immigration proposal than Clinton. While both candidates might agree on some major policy objectives, we don’t know where Clinton stands on specifics like Border Patrol accountability or family detention.
Executive Actions
2) Increase access to legal counsel. Unlike criminal defendants, immigrants facing deportation don’t have the right to a state-appointed lawyer.
3) Curb DOJ rules that allow for racial profiling of immigrants. Currently, profiling of suspects is on the basis of race, religion, gender and other factors is allowed “only to the extent that there is trustworthy information, relevant to the locality or time frame, that links persons possessing a particular listed characteristic to an identified criminal incident.”
4) Reduce or cease deporting immigrant to "unfamiliar locations." Busted for crossing the border from Mexico? Under current rules, you get be deported to pretty much any part of your country.
5) Require Customs and Border Patrol agents to wear body cameras, something that the agency recently refused to do. Sanders also called for agents to be held accountable for excessive force violations, something that activists say the CBP is not currently doing. The agency disagrees.
6) Reduce or eliminate border checkpoints inside the 100-mile border zone. Probably more exciting for libertarian YouTubers than actual immigrants, this proposal seeks to end a quirky rule that groups like the ACLU claim eliminate the 4th Amendment along an arbitrary swath of the country.
7) End Obama’s Priority Enforcement Program, a toned down version of the Secure Communities program that deputizes local law enforcement to help immigration officials.
8) Expand "parole in place." Like DACA or DAPA (Obama's deferred actions for DREAMers and their Parents), “parole in place” allowed undocumented immigrants to stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation. Currently, it is only available to spouses, parents, and children of military personnel.
Legislative Goals and Priorities
9) Expand the definition of asylum to include victims of gang violence. Currently, asylum is restricted to those who are persecuted “on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.”
Sanders proposal seeks to flip that requirement to include a class of aggressors: gangs. Depending on how this is ultimately phrased, this proposed class of asylum seekers could include a significant percentage of the population of El Salvador.
10) Whistleblower visa: immigrants who are important witnesses in domestic violence and other violent crime cases have access to a U-Visa. Sanders wants another visa that allows immigrants to live and work in the U.S. if they are witnesses or plaintiffs in Labor disputes.
11) Additional funding to the completely swamped immigration court system.

A Clinton spokesperson declined to comment. MoveOn and Clinton have a long and not always an amicable history. The group started in 1998 to fight the impeachment of her husband, former President Bill Clinton. In 2007, all eight candidates for the Democratic nomination, including Hillary Clinton, participated in the group’s presidential forum. MoveOn ended up endorsing Barack Obama. Several months later, Clinton was recorded at a closed-door fundraiser complaining that “MoveOn.org endorsed [Obama] – which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down.” She went on to say, “they know I don’t agree with them,” and she warned the group would “flood” caucuses with activists, including some who “intimidate people who actually show up to support me.” Earlier this year, MoveOn worked to draft Sen. Elizabeth Warren into the 2016 Democratic presidential race, arguing she would be a better pick for the party than Clinton.
But if Clinton was worried about MoveOn’s gusher of money and ability to mobilize activists then, she clearly is not now. While MoveOn is still by far the largest group of its kind, its influence and spending power may have waned as other groups have moved into its space. Still, Democratic strategist Mike Lux, who has spent years in the progressive movement, said Clinton made an error in skipping the forum. “I just think it’s a really bad mistake,” he told MSNBC. “Her biggest problem, I think, both in the primary and in the general is energizing the Democratic base.”

In less than 24 hours after I posted this video of Killer Mike's endorsement of Bernie Sanders in Atlanta yesterday, it has received nearly 2 million views. To many of you who have no idea who Killer Mike is, he is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. While he may not have the household name recognition of Kanye or Jay Z, throughout his career, Killer Mike, born Michael Render, has kept a hardline political edge. In fact, he is pretty much known for his distrust of traditional American leaders of all kinds. In great part, that's why having a guy like Bernie Sanders win over the endorsement of Killer Mike actually resonates deeply with hip hop heads around the country. Mike is not the type of dude who throws these endorsements out every election year, but it's actually deeper than that. Killer Mike's endorsement of Bernie Sanders was impassioned, well-reasoned, purposeful, and realistic. Knowing that his brand is "keep it real," Killer Mike set the tone from the start.
More than any point in recent memory, most of Killer Mike's audience has worn thin about the perpetual over-promising and under-delivering of politicians. Speeches with no substantive follow-up really don't resonate like they may have in the past. Understanding that, Mike connected his own principles with Bernie's primary campaign pillars.

Sanders and Killer Mike dined together before the candidate’s rally. The rapper endorsed Sanders for president in June after the candidate cited his support for restoring the Voting Rights Act.
Killer Mike also touted Sanders’ stance on health care being a right of every citizen, ending the war on drugs, and that education should be free for every citizen.

“I don’t trust the church or the government. A Democrat, a Republican. A pope or a bishop or those other men,” the rapper said in a speech before Sanders took the stage.
“But after spending 5 hours with someone who has spent the last 50 years radically fighting for your rights and mine,” Killer Mike continued, “I can tell you that I am very proud tonight to announce the next president of the United States, Sen. Bernie Sanders.”

Ahead of a Monday night rally in Atlanta, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) fueled up with some soul food. His guide for the day: rapper and Atlanta native Killer Mike, who took the Democratic presidential candidate to The Busy Bee Cafe, a famous soul food joint in the city. According to ABC News, Sanders ordered fried chicken, dark meat, yams, rice and gravy.
Killer Mike, who endorsed Sanders in June, will introduce the candidate at Monday's rally. The rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, has become a prominent activist on police brutality, voting rights and other issues affecting the black community. He announced his support after Sanders pledged to fully restore the Voting Rights Act, part of which the Supreme Court gutted in 2013.
Sanders' Atlanta stop was during a campaign swing through the South, where he is trying to gain more support from black voters. Over the weekend, he addressed several black churches in South Carolina, and earlier on Monday, met with Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr.
