Hillary Clinton Finally Nailed Her Wall Street Answer

“I take a backseat to nobody in being very clear about what I will do to make sure Wall Street never crashes Main Street again, and that you can count on.”

http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/02/hillary-clinton-wall-street-nevada

Responding to a realtor who pressed her on why she would not release the transcripts of her Goldman Sachs speeches—for which she received well over $600,000—Clinton, who had previously waffled on the question, found her footing after an initial promise that she would release her transcripts “when everybody else does the same, because every other candidate in this race has given speeches to private groups.

“But let me get to the heart of your question,” she continued, building steam. “I was the candidate who went to Wall Street before the crash. I was the candidate who went to them and said, ‘You are wrecking our economy. What you are doing with mortgages is going to bring us down.’ I called to end the carried-interest loophole for hedge-fund managers. I called to rein in C.E.O. pay. I now have the most effective and comprehensive plan to deal with the threats that Wall Street poses and I go further than Senator Sanders does because I want to go after all the other bad actors like hedge funds, and bad actors like the A.I.G. insurance company, like Countrywide Mortgage.

“I take a backseat to nobody in being very clear about what I will do to make sure Wall Street never crashes Main Street again, and that you can count on,” she concluded.

While she ended up dodging the realtor’s follow-up question asking if she was only making a political promise, Clinton’s decision to go granular in her response—that is, more granular than she did in some formerly unconvincing answers—represented, if not a ground-shifting moment, a significant advance in her ability to counter Sanders’s claims that her candidacy is compromised by special interests.

SEC primary update: PPP poll shows Hillary Clinton leading across South

http://politics.blog.ajc.com/2016/02/18/sec-primary-update-ppp-poll-shows-hillary-clinton-leading-across-south/

A series of polls shows Hillary Clinton leading Bernie Sanders by 20-plus percentage points in all of the SEC-region states except Oklahoma, which has fewer African-Americans. (Public Policy Polling)

In re Oklahoma, I phone-banked for Hillary last night, calling voters in OK. Everyone I reached (lots of wrong numbers or no answers) was actually very pleasant and interested in the election. No one I spoke to was for Bernie outright, although there were several who were undecided and who told me that they wouldn't decide until they were actually in the voting booth. !!! Hope my call convinced them that Hillary should be their choice. One (all were registered Dems) said he would vote for a Republican, but didn't share which one.

Some were strongly for Hillary and some leaned Hillary. The things that bothered them most: "Benghazi," "partial-birth abortion," and whether Hillary had "accepted Christ."

I enjoyed talking to them, no matter what their answer was, and they seemed to enjoy talking to me. It was the first-time I ever did it - was "Hatched-Out" from such activities for several years and out of the country for others. It is always fun to talk to my fellow citizens in person. I'll be phone-banking for Hillary again! It was also a good group of folks to phone-bank with and more were POC and women (or both) than not ....

Talking To The Terriers At The Westminster Dog Show

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/talking-to-the-terriers-at-the-westminster-dog-show/

The fall of the terrier

The American Kennel Club, which is the governing body for dog shows and whose membership includes Westminster, tallies the most popular breeds in the country each year, going back to 1935. This data is based on purebred dog registrations with the club, which says it registers nearly 1 million dogs each year. (There are something like 80 million dogs owned in the U.S.) [In the mid-20th century,] many of the all-star terrier breeds began to decline.

This fall from prominence has affected more than the multi-champion terrier breeds. The Dandie Dinmont, the Skye, the Kerry Blue, the Bedlington, the Welsh, the standard Manchester, the Australian and the Lakeland have all seen significant declines in popularity, as well.

For some terrier breeds, the situation is existential. In 2011, a campaign was launched to save the Sealyham terrier — winner of four Westminster Best in Shows and once the dog of choice of King George V, Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor — from extinction. “If we can save the rhino or tiger, we can surely save this useful and charming breed of dog,” the British magazine Country Life wrote.

Hillary Clinton ratchets up the battle for black endorsements in Georgia

A day after state Sen. Vincent Fort spurned Hillary Clinton for his top rival, the former secretary of state’s campaign ratcheted up the race for black endorsements in Georgia in a major way.

http://politics.blog.ajc.com/2016/02/18/hillary-clinton-ratchets-up-the-battle-for-black-endorsements-in-georgia/

The Clinton camp unleashed a lengthy list of nearly three dozen black state legislators who endorsed her bid for the presidency in the runup to Georgia’s March 1 primary. Some of them had already supported her campaign, but it was a show of force for a candidate who is relying on minority backing to halt Bernie Sanders’ momentum.

“For me, supporting Hillary was not a hard decision. Her record and commitment is unmatched,” said state Rep. Calvin Smyre, a Columbus Democrat and the longest-serving member of the House. “Make no mistake, no candidate, Democratic or Republican, is better prepared or positioned to serve our communities around the nation.”

And here’s the list of Georgia state lawmakers the Clinton campaign unveiled this morning:

Georgia State Senator Gail Davenport
Georgia State Senator Ed Harbison
Georgia State Senator Donzella James

Inside Hillary Clinton's Midnight Visit to a Las Vegas Hotel Laundry Room

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/inside-hillary-clintons-midnight-visit-las-vegas-hotel/story?id=37028990

Before going to bed early this morning, Hillary Clinton paid a late-night visit to a laundry room at her Las Vegas hotel to court a group of union housekeeping workers -- a sign of just how intense the race for every single vote in Nevada has become.

Clinton, wearing her glasses, entered the brightly lit room at Caesar's Palace just after midnight today where four female workers from Culinary Union 226 were folding hotel room linens as part of their 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift. She immediately gave each of them a hug.
...
During the short visit, Clinton told the women that she appreciates all the work they do and asked them to caucus for her at 11 a.m. on Saturday. "You know you can caucus here?" she asked them.

A manager chimed in to clarify for the workers that they will have the time granted for the opportunity to caucus at the hotel if they so choose.

Frankly, I don't know how either one of our candidates is still standing. What are their secrets to 24/7 energy?

Cleveland Clinic to host Las Vegas Democratic town hall tonight for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders

This post is for information, not advocacy on behalf of either candidate, so please keep comments impartial. I had not realized this would happen and just want to spread the word.

http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2016/02/cleveland_clinic_to_host_democratic_town_hall_tonight_for_clinton_sanders.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Clinic will take center stage tonight in the Democratic primary fight between Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Well, actually it will become the stage.

The Clinic has offered up its Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas as the venue for a town hall with Clinton and Sanders. The event will be broadcast on MSNBC at 9 p.m.

The town hall is the last showdown between the candidates before the pivotal Nevada caucuses on Saturday. It will be hosted by moderators Chuck Todd and Jose Diaz-Balart.

MSNBC engineers have spent much of the last three days loading audio, lights and staging into the Clinic's Frank Gehry-designed medical center, which focuses on neuro degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson's.

Civil rights attorney Bill Murphy endorses Hillary Clinton

Civil rights attorney Bill Murphy, who is representing Flint residents in a class-action lawsuit, has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, according to a campaign aide.

http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/civil-rights-attorney-bill-murphy-endorses-hillary-clinton

Murphy said he decided to back Clinton “because she has a better relationship with communities of color than Bernie [Sanders] or any other candidate.” He made the announcement only days before the Nevada Democratic caucus, which appears to be a tight race between the two presidential candidates.

The well-known Baltimore lawyer, who also represented the family of Freddie Gray, who died in police custody, filed a federal suit against Michigan officials earlier this month. He is seeking compensation on behalf of Flint citizens for all water bills paid for undrinkable water tainted with lead.

Scalia’s West Texas Vacation Courtesy of Businessman With Prior Supreme Court Case

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/02/was-scalias-west-texas-vacation-morally-suspect.html?mid=facebook_nymag

Scalia was never too concerned about the appearance of impropriety

When Antonin Scalia was found dead in his bed on a ranch in West Texas, conspiracy theorists immediately questioned the circumstances behind Scalia's death: Were there signs of a struggle? Why wasn't an autopsy performed? Was he in poor health? But new evidence suggests it might be more useful to examine not the cause of Scalia's death but the circumstances of his vacation. According to a report by the Washington Post, the associate justice was on a hunting trip at the 30,000-acre luxury resort of John B. Poindexter, owner of J.B. Poindexter & Co., a Houston manufacturing firm. The Supreme Court last year declined to hear a case involving an age-discrimination lawsuit against Poindexter's company.

Apparently Poindexter (who is not, by the way, the John M. Poindexter of Reagan-era scandal fame) hosts large gatherings at the ranch "two or three times a year." Scalia wasn't charged for his stay, but Poindexter denies paying for the justice's trip to Texas. "I did not pay for the Justice’s trip to Cibolo Creek Ranch," he wrote in an email to the Post. "He was an invited guest, along with a friend, just like 35 others." He went on, "The Justice was treated no differently by me, as no one was charged for activities, room and board, beverages, etc. That is a 22-year policy." Scalia presumably would've noted the event on his expense report, but such reports don't detail who is involved with events alongside justices. If Scalia had survived the trip, Poindexter's involvement would likely have gone unnoticed.

This isn't the first time Scalia has forgone the Caesar's-wife appearance of extreme propriety for a good hunting trip. In 2004 Scalia joined Dick Cheney at a private camp in southern Louisiana while Cheney was the subject of a lawsuit over his energy task force. Legal experts questioned whether Scalia ought to be shooting game with a man he might be forced to convict. In response, Scalia said only, "I do not think my impartiality could reasonably be questioned." ...

Denise Juneau for US Congress

From my Inbox today:

I'm writing to share some exciting news.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the official campaign arm of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, just named my race to their Red to Blue Emerging Races list. This means that I am recognized in the top 12% of winnable races in the country that could go from Republican to Democrat this year. Pitch in now to keep this momentum going!

"Denise Juneau has a powerful personal story, impressive record serving the people and students of Montana, and experience winning statewide," said DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Lujan. "Denise is building an impressive grassroots organization and has proven that she will have the resources needed to execute a winning campaign. Denise is ready to fight on behalf of all the people of Montana in Washington, keep them safe, and ensure the economy works for everyone."

That is what my campaign for Congress is all about: doing what’s best for Montana first and foremost, with a commitment to helping create new opportunities for working families here at home. But this also means that my race for the U.S. House of Representatives will be very competitive with millions of dollars pouring in from conservative outside groups that don't align with our Montana values.

I'm ready to turn Montana from red to blue. Are you with me?

Denise Juneau is an enrolled member of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes, and a descendant of the Blackfeet Tribe - the first Native American to be elected to statewide office (Superintendent of Public Instruction) in Montana, my birth state. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denise_Juneau

If you want to help turn this office from red to blue, please send Denise some $$$$ at https://denisejuneau.com/
