Herb and shallot compound butter

We made a quick and fast video this week because things got a little away from us. But trust me, this one will make a lot more sense after next week's video when we spatchcock and roast a turkey and use this butter all over it!

Of course it's super easy to customize this one. Your herbs of choice, and the acid of your choice. You can even add lemon zest to this, but my hubby doesn't think that lemon and turkey go all that well together so he used a bit of Tabasco sauce and a dash of vermouth for the acidity. Tailor this to whatever you're using it in. The flavour profile should complement what you're going to use it on. Leftovers are super easy to store. Roll them in parchment or wax paper and pop it in the fridge or freezer.

Libyan Media Dismisses CNNi Report on Slavery After Trump Undermines Network in Tweet

Source: Mediaite

It appears we are now witnessing the real-world implications of President Donald Trump telling the rest of the world that American media outlets are disseminating “fake news.”

In case you missed it, Trump took to Twitter over the weekend to slam CNN International, claiming that the news outlet reflected poorly on the United States, and delivered fake news to other nations. “The outside world does not see the truth from them!” Trump added.

Since Trump told the international community to dismiss the reporting of CNN International, it looks like some are already taking heed. Libyan media is now questioning the authenticity of a bombshell report by CNNi that revealed refugees being bought and sold as slaves in Libya.

The timing of Trump’s CNN International tweet is more than a bit interesting considering that hours before he sent it, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed into law a punitive measure that would force foreign media outlets to register as foreign agents.

Great response to the latest Trump idiot tweet.

So, after the horrific attack in Egypt, Trump of course tweeted something ridiculous:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/934131805409697792
Will be calling the President of Egypt in a short while to discuss the tragic terrorist attack, with so much loss of life. We have to get TOUGHER AND SMARTER than ever before, and we will. Need the WALL, need the BAN! God bless the people of Egypt.

And of course, people are pointing out how ridiculous, nonsensical, tone-deaf, tasteless, and downright wrong Trump is. Here's my personal favourite:

https://twitter.com/KenTremendous/status/934137158700384257
We need a WALL between us and MEXICO, a CATHOLIC-MAJORITY NATION, to respond to an ATTACK *AGAINST* MUSLIMS in EGYPT, a MUSLIM-MAJORITY nation, because I am an IDIOT who understands NOTHING about ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, I am very STUPID, and I'm playing GOLF RIGHT NOW.

Franken is a trap and it's lose-lose for us.

A couple of different ways this might all go down.

1) There's an investigation and Franken is found to be a serial creep. Seems unlikely, but it's out there. We lose a Democratic lion in the Senate who has been a very strong and loud voice standing up against GOP appointees and policies. I'm sure we'd all like to think that this would allow us to bring down other big name molesters (like Trump himself), but we all know that the right wingers do not hold their people to the same standards that we do ours.

2) The women are discredited and the allegations are found to be entirely spurious. This allows the GOP to paint the accusers of people like Trump and Moore as spurious as well, even though a) the accusations are nowhere near the same severity and b) they are well documented and not anonymous. And the media will report it as a "These ladies over here have been debunked, what does that mean for Trump and Moore's accusers?" This has the add-on effect of pushing real accusations of molestation and assault back underground just as women were starting to make some headway exposing well-known (within their industries) molesters like Harvey Weinstein, Louis CK, Andy Signore, and Brett Ratner.

3) Something in the middle. Franken is determined to be a slight creep. He apologizes, issues a statement, everyone moves on. The right uses this as a way to shield their much bigger, more dangerous, and horrific creeps with a "Well, you kept yours in power! Why shouldn't Moore be in the Senate if you're not going to deal with Franken?" and they get to bash us over the head with it in the next election cycle.

The good news: There is a hint that people are starting to get a bit fed up with the lies, obfuscation, moralizing, and moral relativism of the right. That is where the real change is going to come from. Bubbling up from the ground as voters decide that they've had enough of being obviously lied to in order to enrich the already mega-wealthy.

Ginger Molasses Cookies recipe

So, our video this week is a really delicious cookie recipe that has recently been repopularized by a big coffee chain *cough*starbucks*cough*. But it really is a delicious cookie, and if you bake them differently, you can sort of customize how they come out. My husband used to serve this in his restaurant in the winter months. If you cook them until they're just soft (as we did in this video), they will be crisp on the outside and still soft inside. You can, however, bake them just a few minutes longer (3 or 4), and they'll come out crunchy instead of chewy.

The crystalized/candied ginger is entirely optional in this recipe, but it is a really fantastic addition. They add a real bright gingery kick to the final flavour of the cookies. Also, this is a great recipe to make a large batch of, roll into balls, roll in sugar, then pop them into a great big ziplock bag in the freezer and whenever you want some cookies, just get out 4 or 5 and have fresh hot cookies whenever you want!

(NOT SATIRE) Trump Fans Are Owning Libs by Losing All Their Friends

Full article here on VICE: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vb3aqd/trump-fans-are-owning-libs-by-losing-all-their-friends

In the era of Trump, Breitbart, and the MAGA set, it seems as if familial cordiality is becoming a thing of the past for many. America has always been ruled by political tribalism to some degree or another, but the divisions have been kicked up to 11 since the 2016 election, with no signs of being cranked down anytime soon.

The evidence of this is (of course) on social media. On Tuesday, popular pro-Trump Twitter account @Education4Libs tweeted out, “I just saved a bunch of money on Christmas presents by sharing my political views on Facebook,” a sentiment that subsequently went viral, with more than 2,700 retweets. Obviously the original post was meant to be (at least partially) satirical, but as beloved cool guy of online @RandyGDub pointed out, it precipitated thousands of replies from @Education4Libs’s fellow Trumpers, many of whom seemed gleeful that their breathless support of America’s big wet leader has alienated them from their loved ones:

Trickle-down economics may be a big pile of Reagan-era bullshit, but trickle-down Trumpism seems to be a startlingly real factor behind this rise in manic tribalist behavior. Trump’s identity, and his style of governance, is based on highly polarized divisiveness and outspoken feuding. In just the past few weeks, he has started extremely public fights with everyone from NFL player Marshawn Lynch to basketball dad LaVar Ball to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. The unifying factor in the Trump attacks is a complete scorched-earth strategy: The NFL should enforce his suggestions or face total boycott. Ball should be thanking Trump on both knees for keeping his son out of Chinese prison. There is no room for nuance or compromise or even just not talking politics—either you’re with Trump, or fuck you. And now his supporters are bringing this philosophy into their own lives.

During the campaign, Trump said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose voters." I used to think that statement was hyperbolic, but it seems more and more likely to be true. Fuck, he might just do it to prove himself right. (I can hear him now telling Steve Doucey he’s never even been on Fifth Avenue.) I never had many Trump-supporting friends on Facebook to begin with, but the few I did have spent the last year systemically antagonizing everyone they knew, almost challenging them to sever ties.

Conservatives are of course not the only guilty parties here —many on the left have consciously uncoupled from relatives and friends following the election of America’s Special Guy. (I personally cut ties with an old co-worker who sent me a bunch of racist stuff on election night as a way to gloat.) But the gleeful attitude of some of these Trump supporters is still a hell of a thing to see. It’s supposed to be sad when we can’t bring ourselves to sit down to a meal with people we disagree with. Politics isn’t supposed to be this toxic.

World Party: Ship of Fools

This song from 1987 (30 years ago!!) sums up my feelings on Trump's presidency pretty astutely.

Someone get me off this ship of fools! Here are the lyrics:

We're setting sail
To the place on the map from which no one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burn
Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip baby
Pay, you will pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
You will pay tomorrow
Save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools, no no
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools, no no
I want to run and hide
Right now
Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea
They will leave you drifting in the shallows
Drowning in the oceans of history
Travellin' the world, you're in search of no good
But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like I knew you would
Using all the good people for your galley slaves
As your little boat struggles through the the warning waves
But you will pay, you will pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
You gonna pay tomorrow
Save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools, no
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools, no
Where's it comin' from or where's it goin' to?
It's just a, it's just a ship of fools
All aboard

But I think we can all agree that Trump's going to pay tomorrow. Mueller's knocking at your door! You will pay tomorrow!

A perfect Twitter summary of the GOP today (wrt. Roy Moore)

https://twitter.com/Mikel_Jollett/status/932643662927773701

The Republican Party is currently defending a pedophile so that he can vote for a tax plan which takes money meant for sick children and gives it to people with private jets.

It calls itself the party of "family values."
