Joe Biden Will Face This Overlooked Crisis on Day 1

True, President Trump and many Republicans are giving the appearance of contesting the election, perhaps to placate Trump's ego.

The Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis together have revealed the limits of our capacity to respond to crises that demand basic coordination and resources, limits made far worse by members of the Trump administration but not solely their fault.

With Democratic control of the Senate, the Biden administration would have been able to use an obscure process, the Congressional Review Act, to reverse regulations finalized late this year, just as Mr. Trump and congressional Republicans used it 16 times to reverse regulations from President Barack Obama's administration.

The Trump administration's shocking sabotage of the census adds another complication that will ripple through the management of the more than 130 federal programs, including Medicaid and food stamps, that use census data to allocate funds

"Defund the police" is the new "Obamacare": The Texas #cjreform landscape post-election

Now that the most divisive presidential election in 50 years is over and, win, lose or (largely) draw, everybody can take a deep breath, it's time for criminal-justice reformers to peek our heads above the wreckage to see what remains of a state and local agenda after a tumultuous year and a grueling election season which, at the state level in Texas, resulted in a complete stalemate, from a partisan perspective.
Criminal-justice reform is the new Obamacare

It's been quite a year for criminal-justice reformers. And we've learned some things. Although the public doesn't like the phrase "defund the police," they tend to like all the policies that might allow police to be defunded. Grits sees this a bit like "Obamacare," which of course, really, was the "Affordable Care Act." Republicans branded it with a president who was unpopular with their base and then railed against it for years, passing dozens of weird, Pyrrhic votes to abolish it. For a while, "Obamacare" polled very badly.

Federal Regulators Accuse Zoom Of Misleading Users About Security

Source: CBS DFW

CThe FTC filed a complaint against Zoom stating Zoom promised "End-to-end encryption," a way to protect consumers on sensitive calls so only the sender and the recipient could see and hear.

It says Zoom told users that recorded meetings would be secure, but "In reality, Zoom kept encrypted recordings on its servers for up to 60 days before moving them to its secure cloud storage."

The FTC says Zoom put software on Mac computers that "Could have allowed strangers to spy on users through their computer's web cameras."

"The security of our users is a top priority for Zoom. We take seriously the trust our users place in us every day, particularly as they rely on us to keep them connected through this unprecedented global crisis, and we continuously improve our security and privacy programs. We are proud of the advancements we have made to our platform, and we have already addressed the issues identified by the FTC. Today's resolution with the FTC is in keeping with our commitment to innovating and enhancing our product as we deliver a secure video communications experience."

Feds Hit An Illinois Charter School Chain With A Big Fine

Source: WBEZ

A politically connected charter school chain based in the Chicago area has agreed to pay $4.5 million to end a long-running federal corruption investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Concept Schools Inc. — which has four publicly-financed campuses in Chicago and dozens of other charter schools in the Midwest — allegedly engaged in a bid-rigging scheme to steer federally funded technology contracts to insiders.

The costly, civil settlement with the government comes more than six years after federal agents raided the charter operator’s northwest suburban offices and other sites connected to Concept in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Source: France 24

Melenchon, a spearhead of the opposition against French President Emmanuel Macron's economic policies and a supporter of the "yellow vest" anti-government protests, won an unprecedented 19.5% in the first round of the 2017 presidential election.

"We have to turn on a light at the end of the tunnel for people, we can do things differently," Melenchon said on television channel TF1's evening news.

"I am ready and I offer my candidacy," he said, adding he would do so only if 150,000 people signed up in favour in an online petition.

Biden adviser says White House has not reached out to president-elect

Source: The Hill

President-elect Joe Biden’s senior campaign adviser, Symone Sanders, said Sunday that the White House has not reached out to the former vice president after he was projected to be the winner of the 2020 election.

Sanders told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “a number of Republicans” in Congress have reached out to Biden, but that no one from the White House has.

"I think the White House has made clear what their strategy is here and that they are going to continue to participate and push forward these flailing and in many respects, baseless, legal strategies,” she said.
“But the people ... are the folks who decide elections in this country and the people have spoken,” she added.

Sanders also said that “the American people picked a good ticket,” adding “there’s a lot of work to be done.”

Senate Democrat: Trump could show 'some graciousness' by backing pandemic relief package

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a close ally of President-elect Joe Biden, said on Sunday that President Trump could “show some graciousness” by backing another coronavirus relief package between now and the end of his term.

“One way that President Trump can show some graciousness in the next 73 days during the transition is to publicly support a significant pandemic relief bill,” Coons said on ABC’s “This Week.” “We’ve had record new cases all this past week, it’s past time for us to come together and deliver the relief the American people are waiting for.”

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked Coons whether such a bill would hurt the odds of a more comprehensive package next year, after Biden is expected to take office.

“I don’t think that passing something that is strong now undermines the opportunity to pass something broader,” Coons responded.
