At least two dead in shootings at California 7-Eleven stores on 7-11

Source: NBC News

On Monday, or 7-11, at least four shootings, two of them fatal, were reported at California 7-Eleven stores.

Authorities are searching for a suspect linked to three in the Los Angeles area.

It wasn't clear whether the suspect was connected to a 7-Eleven shooting in Riverside, a police spokesman said.

A victim in that incident, a customer in his mid-40s, remained in "grave" condition late Monday afternoon, Riverside police spokesman Ryan Railsback said

Nevada man charged in 1982 killing of child in California

Source: Associated Press

A 70-year-old Nevada man has been charged in the 1982 killing of a 5-year-old girl who disappeared while walking to her kindergarten class in California after detectives solved the case using DNA evidence, authorities said.

Robert John Lanoue, of Reno, Nevada, was charged last week in the killing of Anne Pham.

Pham disappeared while walking to her kindergarten class at Highland Elementary School in Seaside, California, on Jan. 21, 1982. Her body was found two days later in the former Fort Ord.

The child had been kidnapped, sexually assaulted and strangled, California authorities said.

How Much Health Insurers Pay For Care Is About To Go Public

How much health insurers pay for care is about to go public : Shots - Health News New government rules are forcing insurers to post on websites what they pay for care or be fined, allowing consumers and employers to comparison shop for health services or negotiate better rates.

Starting July 1, health insurers and self-insured employers must post on websites just about every price they've negotiated with providers for health care services, item by item.

Everyone will know everyone else's business: for example, how much insurers Aetna and Humana pay the same surgery center for a knee replacement.

"What we're learning from the hospital data is that insurers are really bad at negotiating," said Gerard Anderson, a professor in the department of health policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, citing research that found that negotiated rates for hospital care can be higher than what the facilities accept from patients who are not using insurance and are paying cash

Are U.S. Gasoline Refiners Running Out Of Steam?

Refiners don't have much room to safely raise capacity usage further, while the summer season with heat waves and hurricanes could suddenly take some capacity off the market, further straining gasoline supply and putting upward pressure on gasoline prices.

A recent drop in international crude oil prices, which saw in June their first monthly drop since November 2021, coupled with lower gasoline demand and growing stocks in the past two weeks, have helped the average U.S. gasoline price ease back to below $5 a gallon, at $4.807.

The trend of high gasoline production is set to continue in the near future as refiners run at full tilt to take advantage of the high refining margins.

Currently, U.S. refiners are producing at or near maximum levels, and they reiterated this in a letter last month in response to President Biden's call to produce more gasoline.
