Netherlands won't ease lockdown further until at least mid May

The Netherlands has postponed a further easing of lockdown measures until at least May 18 as COVID-19 infections remain high and hospitals are struggling with large numbers of coronavirus patients, the government said on Saturday.

"We are passing the peak of the third wave. But the decline (of the infection rate) is not strong enough yet", health minister Hugo de Jonge said on Twitter.

The Netherlands eased its lockdown slightly last week, as a night-time curfew was lifted and bars and restaurants which had remained shut since mid-October were allowed to serve small groups outdoors between noon and 6 pm

Guantnamo Detainee Takes On CIA 'Black Sites' In UN Human Rights Case

A Palestinian man held in Guantánamo Bay is taking the US, the UK and five other states before a UN human rights panel for their role in the CIA rendition and detention of terrorism suspects at "Black sites" around the world.

The unusual case is being brought to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions by Zayn Al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn, known as Abu Zubaydah, who has been detained for 19 years without trial.

His lawsuit, sent to the UN panel on Friday, says he was held in arbitrary detention and tortured in secret CIA interrogation facilities in Thailand, Poland, Morocco, Lithuania, Afghanistan and the US prison at Guantánamo.

"How the Biden administration responds to international legal claims like this one will be a test of its newly stated commitment to international rule of law and human rights," said Duffy, who is also the director of the advocacy group Human Rights in Practice.

Officials in Switzerland Push Back at Biden 'Tax Haven' Barb

Source: Reuters

Swiss authorities are taking issue with U.S. President Joe Biden's comment that many companies use Switzerland, and two other territories, as tax havens, with the Swiss Federal Department of Finance calling such a claim “inappropriate and completely out of date.”

The pushback reported in Swiss media on Friday comes after Biden said in his speech to Congress on Wednesday that “a lot of companies also evade taxes through tax havens in Switzerland and Bermuda and the Cayman Islands” — part of his call for the rich and corporations to pay their fair share of tax.

“Switzerland considers this highlighting of Switzerland as a tax haven by the USA as inappropriate and completely out of date,” said spokeswoman Isabelle Roesch of the Swiss finance department in an email. “Switzerland meets all international standards in tax matters.”

Biden Hasn't Decided on Requiring U.S. Military Members to Get COVID-19 Vaccine -NBC Interview

Source: Reuters

President Joe Biden said he has not decided whether all U.S. armed servicemen and women should be required to get a COVID-19 vaccine, according to an NBC interview airing on Friday.

Biden said it would be a "tough call" and added that one consideration was that military personnel were often in close proximity to one another.
