Prepare for sticker shock if you are traveling this summer

Source: Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) — Airlines and tourist destinations are expecting monster crowds this summer as travel restrictions ease and pandemic fatigue overcomes lingering fear of contracting COVID-19 during travel.

Many forecasters believe the number of travelers will match or even exceed levels in the good-old, pre-pandemic days. However, airlines have thousands fewer employees than they did in 2019, and that has at times contributed to widespread flight cancellations.

People who are only now booking travel for the summer are experiencing the sticker shock.

Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 a round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a whopping 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel-data firm Hopper.

Oil Prices Are Set To Surge Even Higher This Summer

Source: Oilprice.com

The combination of limited new supply options, increasing risks to traditional supply, and growing demand around the world, is set to send oil prices even higher this summer.

Oil prices have been edging higher this week as improving demand signals highlight the lack of supply options in oil markets if there is a drastic contraction in Russian production, a likely outcome if the European Union bans Russian oil.

The US-Iran antagonism is set to increase further after US authorities seized two laden oil tankers in the Mediterranean, anchored in Croatia's and Greece's territorial waters, for allegedly smuggling oil for Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The UK government will impose a 25% windfall tax on profits of oil and gas companies until the end of 2025 at the latest, stating that the surcharge might be removed when prices return to "Historically more normal levels", without specifying what they are.

'Out of a 007 movie': Police pull over Mercedes equipped with license-plate flipper in OC burglaries

Source: ABC7

IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- Irvine police located and pulled over a
Mercedes-Benz sedan that was possibly involved in a series of vehicle
burglaries -- and unexpectedly discovered a spy-type device that
flipped the license plate.
A man and a woman were arrested in the case, suspected of using the
car that authorities described as "something out of a 007 movie."

The Irvine Police Department on Wednesday released a video clip that
shows how the license-plate flipper on the white 2003 Mercedes C300
operates -- at the push of a button.
"Having it be sophisticated in that way, I've never seen that," police
Sgt. Karie Davies told ABC7. "The license-plate flipping device,
that's a new one. In 19 years I've never seen that used in this way."

According to a statement, police were investigating multiple cases in
which a vehicle without a license plate was driven into parking
structures to commit crimes. Before the Mercedes was found, it was
unclear whether the plate was missing or concealed.

Taliban enforcing face-cover order for female TV anchors

Source: Associated Press

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on Sunday began enforcing an order requiring all female TV news anchors in the country to cover their faces while on-air. The move is part of a hard-line shift drawing condemnation from rights activists.

After the order was announced Thursday, only a handful of news outlets complied. But on Sunday, most female anchors were seen with their faces covered after the Taliban’s Vice and Virtue Ministry began enforcing the decree.

The Information and Culture Ministry previously announced that the policy was “final and non-negotiable.”

“It is just an outside culture imposed on us forcing us to wear a mask and that can create a problem for us while presenting our programs,” said Sonia Niazi, a TV anchor with TOLOnews.

Following defeat, Cawthorn says 'Dark MAGA' must 'take command

Source: MSNBC

After Rep. Madison Cawthorn narrowly lost in a primary on Tuesday
night, the North Carolina Republican seemed to take the news pretty
well. He conceded defeat quite quickly and published a tweet
congratulating his GOP rival. It seemed as if the controversial
congressman was planning to wrap up his career without burning any
bridges.

Cawthorn did not, however, stick to the high road for long. Politico
reported:

> Rep. Madison Cawthorn may not have won his primary race, but he
> isn’t going to leave the political scene quietly. In a Thursday
> Instagram post, the outgoing 26-year-old congressman previewed his
> plans after this Congress session concludes in January, with the
> North Carolina Republican suggesting he’s prepared to target the
> GOP establishment.

Cawthorn’s missive sounded a bitter note, complaining about “the
Uni-party” that defeated him, and whining about the limited number
of people who had his back.

But more interesting was the congressman’s not-so-subtle threats,
which appeared to be directed at his fellow Republicans.
