BREAKING: Dems take control of #VA Senate and...

T-MAC appears to be the new VA governor; and it's still too close to call in the AG race. That GOP needs to be defeated, along with the Lt.Gov if it's the one I"m thinking of - the one who wanted all women to report to the government about their pregnancies?

We can't let this continue:

And some good news:

Abortion Providers Appeal to U.S. Supreme Court

That's in the Texas group. Supposed to be in GD now, but I can't find it. This needs our support!

Thanks for the good news, Sheshe!

Yes he did. As an extreme theocrat, his 'scientific' knowledge is a bit wobbly:

http://www.11points.com/Books/11_Eye-Opening_Highlights_From_a_Creationist_Science_Textbook

The Idiocracy won't build itself, you know. But with the help of Rand and his ilk writing 'scientific papers' for the youth of America, we're galloping on the road to it now.

Carl Sagan wrote The Demon Haunted World in 1996 as “a personal statement, reflecting my love affair with science. But there’s a second reason:

Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”

It has come to pass, even worse than he wrote:

The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan - a review

Carl Sagan may have believed in extraterrestrials, but he knew that belief is meaningless without testable evidence...

Oh, and the dumbing down of America was "most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second soundbites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance." And that was before Rupert Murdoch launched the Fox News channel...

Nor is he afraid of going back to the things that matter, arguing in the next essay that Thomas Jefferson "believed that the habit of scepticism is an essential prerequisite for responsible citizenship. He argued that the cost of education is trivial compared to the cost of ignorance, of leaving government to the wolves..."

Meanwhile, according to the most recent New York Review of Books, a Texas legislator is quoted offering this reasoned argument on the state's responsibility for education: "Where did this idea come from that everybody deserves free education, free medical care, free whatever? It comes from Moscow, from Russia. It comes straight out of the pit of hell."

Are we in such a very different world?

Oh, I now have a face to go with your screen name! You handsome guy!

Loved that Bible you wrote, too.

The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth

...Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. In compiling what has come to be called "The Jefferson Bible," he sought to separate those ethical teachings from the religious dogma and other supernatural elements that are intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels. He presented these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative.

http://www.angelfire.com/co/JeffersonBible/

...In 1895, the National Museum published Thomas Jefferson's Bible based on an edition provided by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph. Beginning in 1904 and lasting through the 1950's, every new member of Congress received a personal copy of the Jefferson Bible. The influence of Thomas Jefferson and the Bible version he drafted exists on both sides of the political spectrum today. Libertarians might draw on the independence of Jefferson's views from the oppressive theocratic monarchies of the time, while liberals can also observe the secularism apparent in his work...

http://aboutthomasjefferson.com/jefferson-bible/211/

Jefferson said on slavery, and it is reportedly written at the Jefferson Memorial:

God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?

Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.

Commerce between master and slave is despotism.

Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free.

It's no wonder he was determined to end that injustice for all of us!

My dad, dead at the age of 51, because he could not get insurance AT ANY PRICE for a pre-existing condition. He had his own business and we watched him die by bits and pieces for ten years.

When the doctor finally offered a surgery to help, it was too late and it cost a fortune in 1960s dollars. But the hospital required cash up front and his previous ER visits had to be paid in cash as well.

I'd already lost my mom. I've lost two homes and the family I created later to the healthcare system. I know exactly what he is talking about.

What Obama did was not perfect, but in the face of the particularly vile form of fascism we've slowly become used to living in, it was a miracle. And there is a reason I respect him like no other President.

Bummer. Years ago one of the big chains in Houston was union, in fact case law was made there.

NLRB v. J. Weingarten, Inc.

LRB v. J. Weingarten, Inc., 420 U.S. 251 (1975), was a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States that ruled that employees in unionized workplaces have the right under the National Labor Relations Act to the presence of a union steward during any management inquiry that the employee reasonably believes may result in discipline...

The Chief Justice was Warren Burger. It was decided by the majority. Life was better then. So much has been lost.

Ah, but you see, spying never happened before in history. It did thousands of years ago, but, but...

ROHN PAWL!!!

I don't know if that's where all of this is coming from, but it's strange...

No, disgusting, that Rand wants to end civil rights for women with his always inserted personhood laws. If it's Sunday or any other day of the week, it's the top of the bills he submits.

Not to mention his assault on the right to assemble to form a union with his national Right-to-Work for nothing bills.

Oh, and he does like his Pappa, support the Right to FOAD for those who can't pay for insurance or car out of their pockets.

No fourth amendment for these women, nosiree!

When Rand yells about the crimes against women by his theological bent, I'll give a shit. That's half of the population right there.

The Constitution does not apply to them, huh, no more than blacks, et al.

That's just my humble opinion, Tarheel Dem and I'm hoping you agree with me.

Honoring a picket line, but missed the strike, LOL!

A short time ago, I was picking some items at several local grocery stores only to be greeted inside by workers all saying they would be going on strike at 7 PM. They all had their local union buttons and a button that referenced a WA state labor website, THE STAND. One of the best places to get labor news, read it to see how labor organizes to protect all of us, and why we have to keep going:

http://www.thestand.org/2012/01/labor-business-urge-frontload-jobs/

Okay, long story that should be shorter, but this is how it was looking that day. Customers in the stores were stocking up, already emptying some of the shelves, saying they'd honor the strike in all the conversations I had, with employees and customers.

There was a sense of urgency in the air and we made plans to shop elsewhere to honor the strike. The workers were planning for a long time off if need be and they explained their attempts to get a deal that didn't take them backwards. The senior citizens were particularly outraged hearing what the Kroger demands were.

This was all said publicly. I'm sure managers heard it as well. If that was part of the reason the way things turned out as they did, I'll never know. But I stayed away a few days, busy with other things, until I had time to google the results. Some others must have too, driving by I didn't see as many people parked.

Here is what happened, for my union brethren:

LABOR: Seattle grocers, unions settle

October 22, 2013 by Jack Katzanek

(Unionized grocery workers in Seattle celebrate the news that a contract with the area’s largest markets had been reached.)

With a little less than two hours to spare, union leaders and four of the largest supermarket chains in the greater Seattle area reached a labor deal Monday, averting what would have been a strike affecting 21,000 workers.

The two sides announced a tentative agreement shortly after 5 p.m. Both sides seem pleased by the results, according to media accounts, and the Seattle Times reported that the workers’ negotiating team — two United Food & Commercial Workers locals and one Teamsters local — was unanimous in their endorsement of the agreement.

The talks had been going on for more than seven months. As recently as Friday night the talks appeared to be falling apart, and the union reps gave the stores a 72-hour strike notice...

It remains to be seen whether some of the terms of Monday’s last-minute deal, which were not disclosed and still must be ratified by the members, could be used as some sort of boiler plate in other locales.

http://blog.pe.com/business/2013/10/22/labor-seattle-grocers-unions-settle/

Meanwhile, union leaders I know are going about the nation signing various workforces into unions. Many battles loom ahead against the Koch, ALEC, teabaggers, libertarians and their media who want all unions and all public workers gone forever. They are destroying the Commons at a fast pace.

At least I have this good news to report. More details from THE STAND See what Kroger tried to do:

Notice the 'Joker smile' face lift all these GOP wives have?

Their faces carry a form enthusiasm that is maniacal.

She's another Cow of Bashan, most likely.

They deserve each other, but we don't deserve to suffer under either of them.

Watching these fascists take over is like being flayed alive.

They make me both sick and terrified.
