Honoring a brother's last wish: $500 tips on a cross-country mission

Source: Fox

While a lot of us woke up Thursday morning to head back to work, or to the malls for Christmas returns, Seth Collins was hitting the road on what could be the final leg of an 18-month feel-good mission of brotherly love.

Waiters and waitresses, rejoice. It's what Seth's kid brother, Aaron, wanted.

In fact, it was his last wish.

"Leave an awesome tip (and I don't mean 25%, I mean $500 on an f***ing pizza) for a waiter or waitress," Aaron wrote in his will. He was only 30 when he died on July 7, 2012.

Walmart's Black Friday Going About As Badly As You'd Expect

Source: Huffington Post

The above video was taken at a Walmart in Johnson City, Tenn., according to Instagram user jcooper770. Such instances weren't limited to a single Walmart store, according to various Internet users:
Walmart spokesperson Brooke Buchanan told The Huffington Post such incidents don't accurately depict what she describes as a successful Black Friday for the retailer.

"We've got great feedback from customers and associates across the country," Buchanan told The Huffington Post. "A few tweets aren't representative of what's actually happening at 4,600 stores."

Last night I saw why the GOP will lose again in '16

I caught the end of the O'Reilly show over on fox. He reads a few letters/emails at the end of each show. When I came in he had just started that segment. He read 2 from people who were commenting on a previous show where O'reilly must have been talking about Christie being the apparent front runner for the next election. Both of these commenters basically said this (not exact quotes) "If the GOP nominates another moderate like Christie, I will not support him or vote for him" O'Reilly pointed this out as a problem that may be overcome by Christie GETTING more independent voters. Here is MY theory, which I have posted in a few OP comments recently.

This is why they will lose. There are only 2 scenarios for the GOP.
1- They nominate Christie, or some other seemingly "moderate" candidate. The far right, tea party types, etc, refuse to support him/her and stay home. The extra independent votes just equals it out and there is no vote gain. They lose.
2- The "conservatives" FINALLY get their long-awaited wish of getting a TRUE CONSERVATIVE candidate. A Cruz/Palin, whatever. They flock to the polls, but nobody else does and again, they lose. I wonder what their excuse would be then? Blame the liberal media?

And thats what is different here. Obviously Hillary is the frontrunner for '16. Many here on DU do not want her as the candidate, but 90% of those, from the comments I've read, WILL vote for her over a GOP candidate. Because staying home is almost the same as voting for the opponent. The GOP righties are too stupid to realize this and will continue to cut their own throats. You already see it with them running primary opponents against incumbents.

So thats my take on it. I dont see any scenario where the GOP will realize their folly and come together. The Democrats almost always have in the end.

Ted Cruz's Dad Calls US a "Christian Nation," Says Obama Should Go "Back to Kenya

Source: Mother Jones

—By David Corn | Thu Oct. 31, 2013 3:00 AM PDT
In April, Rafael Cruz, the father of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), spoke to the tea party of Hood County, which is southwest of Fort Worth, and made a bold declaration: The United States is a "Christian nation." The septuagenarian businessman turned evangelical pastor did not choose to use the more inclusive formulation "Judeo-Christian nation." Insisting that the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution "were signed on the knees of the framers" and were a "divine revelation from God," he went on to say, "yet our president has the gall to tell us that this is not a Christian nation…The United States of America was formed to honor the word of God." Seven months earlier, Rafael Cruz, speaking to the North Texas Tea Party on behalf of his son, who was then running for Senate, called President Barack Obama an "outright Marxist" who "seeks to destroy all concept of God," and he urged the crowd to send Obama "back to Kenya."

>>>And the GOP thinks Cruz is the answer in '16? Hillary would win without even leaving her house to campaign.
There's a lot to read in the article. And all of it would bite Cruz in the ass if he decides to run. What a joke.

Detroit mailman saves familys burning home, continues his route.

DETROIT (WJBK) -
He won't admit it but one Detroit neighborhood mailman is a hero now. "I wouldn't say a hero," Darrian Crutcher says, hoping to set the record straight. But others see it differently.

Tuesday morning Detroit firefighters responded to a house fire on Stansbury Street. When they arrived they found Crutcher upstairs putting the fire out with the home's garden hose.

FLA cop gives admitted shoplifter $100 to buy groceries

Source: aol.com

The central mission of police work is to uphold the law. But police officers are also human beings, and so can find themselves confronted with situations that force them to ask the question -- should I really just look the other way? As south Florida outlet WSVN reported, Florida police officer Vicki Thomas recently found herself dealing with that very dilemma when she discovered a woman was shoplifting from a supermarket simply because she couldn't afford to buy food for her children.

Thomas did arrest Jessica Robles on a theft misdemeanor charge, but opted against booking her and taking her to jail. Instead, she gave her a notice to appear in court. And then Thomas handed her $100 so she could buy more groceries.

A good deed from a cop; a welcome change from what we usually read.

Battery stored power sparks backlash from utilities

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-07/battery-stored-solar-power-sparks-backlash-from-utilities.html

>>>>>California’s three biggest utilities are sparring with their own customers about systems that store energy from the sun, opening another front in the battle that’s redefining the mission of electricity generators.
Edison International (EIX), PG&E Corp. and Sempra Energy (SRE) said they’re putting up hurdles to some battery backups wired to solar panels because they can’t be certain the power flowing back to the grid from the units is actually clean energy.<<<<<

Imagine what these systems will be like in another decade? Its very exciting to me!

Gulf states to introduce medical testing on travelers to 'detect' gay people and stop them

Source: Daily Mail UK

A medical test being developed by Kuwait will be used to 'detect' homosexuals and prevent them from entering the country – or any of the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC), according to a Kuwaiti government official.
GCC member countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – already deem homosexual acts unlawful.
This controversial stance is being toughened, with members of the LGBT community stopped at the border and banned from entering the country, according to Yousouf Mindkar, the director of public health at the Kuwaiti health ministry.

He told Kuwait newspaper Al Rai: ‘Health centres conduct the routine medical check to assess the health of the expatriates when they come into the GCC countries. However, we will take stricter measures that will help us detect gays who will be then barred from entering Kuwait or any of the GCC member states.’

This is more suited for "The Onion". Sadly, it's not a satire. Unbelievable.

Saudi cleric says driving risks damaging women's ovaries

Source: BBC

Women who drive risk damaging their ovaries and producing children with clinical problems, according to a conservative Saudi cleric.

The comment, made by Sheikh Saleh al-Lohaidan, came as activists step up their campaign for women in Saudi Arabia to be allowed to drive.

"If a woman drives a car, not out of pure necessity, that could have negative physiological impacts as functional and physiological medical studies show that it automatically affects the ovaries and pushes the pelvis upwards," Sheikh Lohaidan told the news website Sabq.org.

They just can't help themselves, can they? Where are these "physiological medical studies"?
