BEAM SIGNED BY OBAMA RAISED AT WORLD TRADE CENTER

NEW YORK (AP) — A steel beam signed by President Barack Obama was lifted into place Thursday at the top of the 104-story One World Trade Center.

A crane atop the building raised the beam from the ground after dozens of people, including construction workers and police officers, added their own signatures near those of the president and first lady Michelle Obama.

"It feels really good to be a part of it," said iron worker James Brady, part of the crew that lifted the beam. "I feel very proud to be here. I feel very lucky to be here."

Speaker Boehner Releases List of 88 Economists Who Agree Obama Tax Plan Will Hurt Small Business & Further Damage Economy

WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today released a list of 88 American economists who warn that the looming January 1 tax hike supported by President Obama and congressional Democratic leaders – which independent accounting firm Ernst & Young says will hit thousands of small businesses and cost the U.S. more than 700,000 jobs – will hurt the economy and must be stopped before it goes into effect.

“President Obama was wrong when he told small business owners ‘you didn’t build that’,” said Speaker Boehner. “Entrepreneurs and innovators are responsible for their success, not government, and we need to get Washington out of their way. These economists agree: stopping all of the tax hikes scheduled for January 1 is necessary to prevent further job losses and damage to our nation’s economy.”

Economists say the looming tax hikes threaten private-sector job growth, and are calling them everything from “patently irresponsible” to “misguided in the extreme”:

Controversy Ahead Of House Hearing On GOP’s ‘English Only’ Bill

A Republican witness at today’s House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on legislation making English the official language of the United States is from an organization with ties to racism.

Dr. Rosalie Porter, chairwoman of the board of ProEnglish, is testifying in support of the “English Language Unity Act of 2011” before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution on Thursday morning.

ProEnglish is headed by executive director Robert Vandervoort, who came under fire for hosting a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this year featuring Peter Brimelow of the website VDARE, an organization labeled as a white nationalist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The panel also featured a speech from then-National Review editor John Derbyshire, who would later be fired from the magazine for writing a racist article in the wake of the shooting of Trayvon Martin.

Porter also spoke on the CPAC panel, where the immigrant and former bilingual teacher called bilingual education an “insane idea.”

NASA Hosts Social Media Events Across Seven Agency Field Centers

WASHINGTON -- NASA's social media followers at seven field centers around the nation will virtually come together at a NASA Social on Friday, Aug. 3, to preview the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory's (MSL) Curiosity rover on Aug. 6 EDT (Aug. 5 PDT).

NASA Socials are in-person meetings with people who engage with the agency through Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks. Events will be held simultaneously at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.; Glenn Research Center in Cleveland; Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.; Johnson Space Center in Houston; Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. Kennedy will be celebrating its 50th anniversary during its NASA Social.

From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. EDT, every center will be connected with JPL, which manages the MSL mission for NASA, via a multi-center NASA Television simulcast. NASA Social participants at each center will have the opportunity to ask questions of the JPL science and engineering teams during the simulcast. More than 150 social media followers also will tour their respective host NASA center.

You can view the social online during the day Friday by visiting a NASA dashboard at: http://www.nasa.gov/social. To get an inside view during the simulcast with all the centers participating, view the new NASA superchannel and select webcam views at http://www.ustream.tv/nasa. The NASA Social speaker program and news conferences also will be carried on http://ustream.tv/NASAJPL with live moderated Web chat.

Bachmann: ‘It Is My Duty As A Member Of Congress’ To Investigate Muslim Influence

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) reiterated her efforts to uncover alleged Muslim Brotherhood infiltration of U.S. foreign policy, charging in a guest column in the Minneapolis Star Tribune that “Washington’s political and media establishment fears an honest discussion about the real threat to this country posed by radical Islam.”

It is my duty as a member of Congress to ask why the Obama administration has repeatedly undermined America’s national security and bows to political correctness on issues related to radical Islam. The safety and security of every person in my district, as well as all Americans, is of preeminent importance and concern to me.

The Washington establishment has two choices: It can either remain asleep about the threat of radical Islam, or it can do everything possible to rally the country to a defense and preservation of American values and our way of life. We owe that to the American people.

Mitt Romney is living every social scientist's nightmare

This is, far and away, my worst nightmare.

I bring this up because yesterday in the National Review, Mitt Romney doubled down on his "culture comments" he made in Israel:

During my recent trip to Israel, I had suggested that the choices a society makes about its culture play a role in creating prosperity, and that the significant disparity between Israeli and Palestinian living standards was powerfully influenced by it. In some quarters, that comment became the subject of controversy.

But what exactly accounts for prosperity if not culture? In the case of the United States, it is a particular kind of culture that has made us the greatest economic power in the history of the earth. Many significant features come to mind: our work ethic, our appreciation for education, our willingness to take risks, our commitment to honor and oath, our family orientation, our devotion to a purpose greater than ourselves, our patriotism. But one feature of our culture that propels the American economy stands out above all others: freedom. The American economy is fueled by freedom. Free people and their free enterprises are what drive our economic vitality.

Kofi Annan Quits ... on Syria

The Associated Press ?@AP

BREAKING: Kofi Annan says he is quitting as special envoy to Syria, effective Aug. 31. -EF

Annan quits as U.N.-Arab League Syria envoy

UNITED NATIONS: Kofi Annan is quitting as U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria after battling to persuade President Bashar Assad to accept a peace plan, the U.N. said Thursday.

U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon announced "with deep regret," that Annan had tendered his resignation, as the Syrian civil war spiraled further out of control.

The U.N. and Arab League named Annan, a Nobel Peace prize winning former U.N. secretary general, as its envoy on the Syria conflict on February 23. Assad agreed a six-point peace plan with Annan but has never carried it out.

"I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Mr Annan for the determined and courageous efforts he has made as the Joint Special Envoy for Syria," Ban said in a statement.

Double down and RAISE ... Harry Reid

Reid doubles down on tax claims

We noted yesterday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the Huffington Post that what he claimed was a Bain Capital investor had called him to say Mitt Romney didn't pay taxes for ten years - without saying who told him this, or what basis there was for the claim.

Earlier today, he doubled down on the unsubstantiated claim with reporters in Nevada:

"I am not basing this on some figment of my imagination," Reid said in a telephone call with Nevada reporters. "I have had a number of people tell me that."

Asked to elaborate on his sources, Reid declined. "No, that's the best you're going to get from me."

"I don't think the burden should be on me," Reid said. "The burden should be on him. He's the one I've alleged has not paid any taxes. Why didn't he release his tax returns?
