About Me

As both a Judge of Election, who is sworn to uphold the Constitution and laws of Pennsylvania, and as a practicing attorney, I have a keen interest in the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Pennsylvania’s Photo ID Law that currently is making its way through the Pennsylvania courts. Unsatisfied with the lack of detail in press reports about the case, I have taken it upon myself to follow and report on the litigation, as well as news about the law generally, through my blog, Free and Equal PA (http://freeandequalpa.wordpress.com/).

Summary of the Photo ID Decision

For anyone who would like to read a detailed summary of the opinion denying the request to enjoin the photo ID law without actually reading all 70 pages of it:

Summary of Closing Arguments in PA Photo ID Trial

Better late than never. I finally had a chance to read the transcript of the closing arguments from the Photo ID Trial as well as the parties' post-trial briefs and posted a summary here:

Most interesting, I think, is that the Commonwealth continues to argue that voting is not a fundamental right.

PA Photo ID Law: The State Admits There Is No Evidence Of In-Person Voter Impersonation Fraud

In the lawsuit challenging the PA photo ID law, the Commonwealth has admitted in writing that there is no evidence of in-person voter impersonation fraud, which is the only kind of fraud a law requiring voters to show ID at the polls possibly could prevent: http://pilcop.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Exhibit-3-Applewhite-Stipulation-copy.pdf

If you are interested in following developments in the lawsuit, I am reporting on it on my blog: http://freeandequalpa.wordpress.com/

Pennsylvania Photo ID Law Blogger (and new 10 poster)

Hello, and nice to "meet" you all.

I am a Judge of Election in Pennsylvania, which is the fancy name they give to the poll worker elected to run each polling place in Pennsylvania (so there are thousands of us across the state). In that position, I take an oath to uphold the Constitution and laws of Pennsylvania. I also am a practicing attorney. Both of those roles make me keenly interested in the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Pennsylvania’s new Photo ID Law, which currently is making its way through the Pennsylvania courts (and, in fact, scheduled for trial next week). Unsatisfied with the lack of detail in press reports about the case, I have taken it upon myself to follow and report on the litigation, as well as news about the law generally, through my blog, Free and Equal PA.
