Clinton Seen as Winner in November; A Trump Presidency Inspires Anxiety (POLL)

WATCH Bernie Sanders Meets With President Obama Ahead of Iowa Caucuses

Most Americans expect that Hillary Clinton would prevail against her leading GOP opponent in November, while Bernie Sanders’ chances are rated less well. The thought of Donald Trump as president inspires high levels of public anxiety.

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll also finds Americans divided about the need for a third party in this country – but not so divided about a potential independent run by Trump, should he fail to win the GOP nomination. Fewer than a quarter say they’d even consider voting for him as an independent candidate for president.

With Trump as the GOP nominee vs. Clinton, 54 percent of Americans say they’d expect Clinton to win; among registered voters (a more GOP-leaning group), Clinton has 52 percent support. Clinton’s seen by much wider margins as beating Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Sanders, for his part, is seen as beating Cruz or Rubio – but potentially losing to Trump.

Gabby Giffords to Campaign With Hillary Clinton

by Monica Alba

DES MOINES, IOWA - ......................

Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will appear at a rally with Clinton in Ames on Saturday and kick off a canvassing event later in the day, the campaign confirmed.

The couple became outspoken advocates for gun control after Giffords survived a shot to the head at a political event in Tucson five years ago. Two years later, they founded a superPAC called Americans for Responsible Solutions, just weeks weeks after a gunman killed 26 people—20 of them children—at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

This weekend, the pair will praise Clinton's record to prevent gun violence and dedication to "common sense" safety measures, according to an aide.

Giffords and Kelly endorsed Clinton earlier this month in a statement, saying: "Only one candidate for president has the determination and toughness to stand up to the corporate gun lobby - and the record to prove it. That candidate is Hillary Clinton."

They also praised Clinton for doing "what is right, not what is politically expedient." ........................

Sanders conveniently omits that Hillary meets with African American Leaders in Phillly

Oh yes, Bernie Sanders last night was mud-slinging --told his rally that he would rather be here in Iowa than what Hillary was doing -fund raising in Philadelphia. But Sanders did not tell his rally the whole truth and left out that Hillary was also meeting with Afro-American Leaders. It is dishonest of Sanders to do this. How can we trust him to tell us the Truth?? But most of headlines tell the truth!

BTW--msnbc played a clip of Sanders on stage mud-slinging-where he ragged on about Hillary's trip to Philly and her fundraising stop where he omitted the fact that Hillary also met with Afro-American leaders and was in Iowa earlier in the day.

Smackdown to Sanders-“We’re not running on any platform of raising taxes,” Pelosi said.

Thanks Nancy

Pelosi throws cold water on Sanders' health plan

(J. Scott Applewhite / Associated Press)

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took aim at a core proposal of Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign, saying Wednesday that his Medicare-for-all health plan is "not going to happen."

“Does anyone in this room think that we’re going to be discussing single payer?" Pelosi said at a news conference in Baltimore kicking off the House Democrats' annual policy conference.

"I’ve been for single payer for 30 years," Pelosi said. But, she said, "that’s not going to happen.”

Sanders defended his Medicare-for-all proposal during Monday's Democratic presidential forum, saying it would eliminate private health insurance premiums even if it requires higher taxes.

But Pelosi made clear that the taxes needed to pay for Sanders' plan were not something House Democrats were eager to embrace.

Bernie Sanders at a Crossroads: Attack Hillary Clinton or Stay Positive?

DES MOINES — Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and his top advisers will gather on Wednesday to confront a decision that will have lasting consequences for his presidential campaign and his political image: whether to open a new, tougher line of advertising against his rival Hillary Clinton in the closing days of the race for Iowa.

The meeting comes as both campaigns acknowledge that Mrs. Clinton has pulled slightly ahead in polling for the Iowa caucuses on Monday. Some advisers to Mr. Sanders believe he can win here only by drawing sharper contrasts with her, especially by emphasizing her ties to Wall Street.

The senator has prided himself on running an inspiring, issue-oriented campaign, and he speaks often of how he is not interested in tearing Mrs. Clinton down.

But the decision he is now grappling with echoes questions voiced by his supporters as Mr. Sanders finds himself within striking distance of Mrs. Clinton in Iowa: Does he have the stomach to directly attack her, and potentially defeat her, or will he be satisfied having injected important issues into the race and preserving his well-earned reputation for eschewing negative campaigning?

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday called for the rapid development of tests, vaccines and treatments to fight the mosquito-transmitted Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects and could spread to the United States in warmer months.

U.S. health officials are stepping up efforts to study the link between Zika virus infections and birth defects, citing a recent study estimating the virus could reach regions where 60 percent of the U.S. population lives.

Obama was briefed on the potential spread of the virus by his top health and national security officials on Tuesday.

“The president emphasized the need to accelerate research efforts to make available better diagnostic tests, to develop vaccines and therapeutics, and to ensure that all Americans have information about the Zika virus and steps they can take to better protect themselves from infection,” the White House said in a statement.

The virus has been linked to brain damage in thousands of babies in Brazil. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, a close cousin of dengue and chikungunya, which causes mild fever and rash. An estimated 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms, making it difficult for pregnant women to know whether they have been infected.

CORALVILLE — Nearly 500 people showed up in Coralville Friday night for a Clinton rally. It wasn’t always clear if they were there for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton first or to see her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who was headlining the rally.

“He’s definitely my favorite president,” Blen Alemayehu of Iowa City said about the former president who has been busy on the campaign trail as the as the race has tightened in the closing weeks.

Nearby, Moussa Diouf, also of Iowa City, was definitely there to support the former first lady.

“I know her better because she was here eight years ago,” he said. However, he only decided Thursday to support Clinton rather than Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“Because of her determination,” he explained. “I like people who don’t quit.”

There’s no quit in her, President Clinton said, affirming this sentiment as he recited details of his wife’s biography.

“She’s the single best change-maker I’ve ever met. Not a change-talker,” he said......................
