In Break With Precedent, Obama Envoys Are Denied Extensions Past Inauguration Day

By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVISJAN. 5, 2017

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald J. Trump’s transition staff has issued a blanket edict requiring politically appointed ambassadors to leave their overseas posts by Inauguration Day, according to several American diplomats familiar with the plan, breaking with decades of precedent by declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods.

The mandate — issued “without exceptions,” according to a terse State Department cable sent on Dec. 23, diplomats who saw it said — threatens to leave the United States without Senate-confirmed envoys for months in critical nations like Germany, Canada and Britain. In the past, administrations of both parties have often granted extensions on a case-by-case basis to allow a handful of ambassadors, particularly those with school-age children, to remain in place for weeks or months.

Mr. Trump, by contrast, has taken a hard line against leaving any of President Obama’s political appointees in place as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20 with a mission of dismantling many of his predecessor’s signature foreign and domestic policy achievements.
“Political” ambassadors, many of them major donors who are nominated by virtue of close ties with the president, almost always leave at the end of his term; ambassadors who are career diplomats often remain in their posts.

A senior Trump transition official said there was no ill will in the move, describing it as a simple matter of ensuring that Mr. Obama’s overseas appointees leave the government on schedule, just as thousands of political aides at the White House and in federal agencies must do. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about internal deliberations, said the ambassadors should not be surprised about being held to a hard end date.

The directive has nonetheless upended the personal lives of many ambassadors, who are scrambling to secure living arrangements and acquire visas allowing them to remain in their countries so their children can remain in school, the diplomats said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

In Costa Rica, Ambassador Stafford Fitzgerald Haney is hunting for a house or an apartment as his family — which includes four school-age children and his wife, who has been battling breast cancer — struggles to figure out how to avoid a move back to the United States with five months left in the school year, according to the diplomats......................

U.S. intercepts capture senior Russian officials celebrating Trump win

.................Given the president-elect’s skepticism about the intelligence community — particularly its conclusions about Russia — the Trump Tower briefing has taken on the tenor of a showdown between the president-elect and the intelligence agencies he has disparaged.

[Top U.S. intelligence official testifies on Russian interference in election ]

“The Russians felt pretty good about what happened on Nov. 8 and they also felt pretty good about what they did,” a senior U.S. official said.

U.S. officials declined to say whether the intercepted communications were cited in the classified version of the report commissioned by Obama, and they emphasized that although the messages were seen as strong indicators of Moscow’s intent and clear preference for Trump, they were not regarded as conclusive evidence of Russian intelligence agencies’ efforts to achieve that outcome.

“There are a variety of different exhibits that make the case, different factors that have provided the intelligence community with high confidence” that Russia sought in part to help elect Trump, said a second senior U.S. official who has reviewed intelligence findings on Russia’s cyber operations. ......................................

House Republicans on Tuesday changed the way Congress calculates the cost of transferring federal lands to the states and other entities, a move that will make it easier for members of the new Congress to cede federal control of public lands.

The provision, included as part as a larger rules package the House approved by a vote of 233 to 190 during its first day in session, highlights the extent to which some congressional Republicans hope to change longstanding rules now that the GOP will control the executive and the legislative branches starting Jan. 20.

Many Republicans, including House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop (R-Utah), have been pushing to hand over large areas of federal land to state and local authorities, on the grounds that they will be more responsive to the concerns of local residents.

..................

But many Democrats argue that these lands should be managed on behalf of all Americans, not just those living nearby, and warn that cash-strapped state and local officials might sell these parcels to developers...........................

The Cheapest Cocktail at the Trump Hotel Is Now $24
The lobby bar raises its prices yet again.

By Jessica Sidman on January 5, 2017

The $24 Romanesque Revival (bourbon, honey, mint, ginger) and $25 Please Sign Here (mezcal, Aperol, chartreuse, lime juice) are among the least expensive cocktails at the Trump hotel.

And you thought the $14 cocktail was too pricey? The Trump hotel’s lobby bar has raised its cocktail prices yet again. The cheapest option now is $24, while the most expensive is $100.

It’s safe to say the Trump hotel’s Benjamin Bar & Lounge is now the most expensive overall bar in all of Washington, and its price hikes are the hugest I’ve ever seen, especially in such a short period.

When the hotel opened on September 12, cocktail prices ranged from $16 to $20—not cheap, but not totally unheard of for a luxury hotel. Then in October, we noted those exact same cocktails had been jacked up to the $20 to $24 range. By that time, the bar had also introduced its $100 cocktail, a martini with three types of vodka, three oysters, and a tin of caviar. (Disturbingly, a bartender told me some people put the oysters in the martini.)

Now the prices of other drinks range from $24 to $29. The bar’s dry-aged burger costs $24....................

GOP senator: Don't link Planned Parenthood to ObamaCare repeal

Source: The Hill

By Jordain Carney - 01/05/17 03:38 PM EST

Moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) is signaling she doesn't want congressional efforts to repeal ObamaCare tied to ending federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
"Obviously I'm not happy to hear that the Speaker wants to include defunding of Planned Parenthood, an extremely controversial issue, in the package," Collins told reporters on Thursday.

But she stopped short of saying the provision, if included, would force her to vote against the measure, pledging that she would "wait and see what happens."

Republicans are using reconciliation, a budget tactic that will require only 50 Senate votes instead of 60, to repeal ObamaCare. They have a 52-seat majority; no Democrat has said they will vote for repeal.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) told reporters earlier Thursday that cutting off federal funding for the women's health organization would be included in the House's repeal measure.

President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to take credit for boosting the album sales of a singer set to perform at his inauguration.

"Jackie Evancho's album sales have skyrocketed after announcing her Inauguration performance," the president-elect tweeted. "Some people just don't understand the 'Movement.'"

.................................................................

Breitbart News last week...................................................

TMZ reported last month that Evancho's album sales quadrupled, raising her "Someday at Christmas" album to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Classical Albums chart. Of Evancho's five previous albums, four of them also reached the top spot on the Billboard Classical chart, while the fifth peaked at No. 2.

On the Top 200 albums chart, Evancho's album is currently at No. 134, down 41 spots from the previous week. "Someday at Christmas" peaked at No. 93 on the Top 200, lower than the peak of her previous four albums.
