Billionaires paid lower tax rate than working class for first time in US history: study

Economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman found in their book-length study "The Triumph of Injustice" that the average tax rate paid by the richest 400 families in the country was lower than the rate paid by the bottom half of American households in 2018, The Washington Post reported.

The wealthiest 400 families had a 23 percent tax rate, compared to the bottom half of households, which had a 24.2 percent tax rate.

Saez and Zucman, economists at the University of California at Berkeley, analyzed Americans' effective tax rates since the 1960s, including federal income taxes, corporate taxes, state and local taxes, and "indirect taxes," which refer to licenses for businesses and motor vehicles, the Post reported........................................

The wealthy's taxes have declined over time from various actions by lawmakers, but the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act significantly lowered taxes for this group.

President Donald Trump is reportedly obsessed with the idea of making his own White House aides take polygraph tests in order to root out leakers.


Four unnamed former White House officials told Politico on Tuesday that Trump is “constantly” bringing up polygraph tests in his battle to plug leaks amid the fallout of a whistleblower complaint on his call with the president of Ukraine.

“He wanted to polygraph every employee in the building to unearth who it was who spoke to the press,” one of the officials said.

Trump tweets that he would "love" for Sondland to testify, but doesn't trust "kangaroo court"

President Trump tweeted that if he allowed EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland to testify today, it would be in front of a "a totally compromised kangaroo court."

This comes after reports that the White House is blocking Sondland from testifying today in the impeachment inquiry.

What's this all about: A source familiar with discussions inside President Trump’s impeachment team says Ambassador Sondland not appearing is “part of an overall strategy connected to what is viewed as irregularities in the House impeachment inquiry.”

Reacting to President Donald Trump’s announcement that American forces will pull out of Syria and pave the way for Turkey to invade the country and attack Kurdish allies, the ultra-conservative televangelist on Monday joined the growing chorus of Republican critics of the president’s decision.


“I am absolutely appalled that the United States is going to betray those democratic forces in northern Syria,” he said during Monday’s broadcast of The 700 Club, first spotted by Right Wing Watch. “That we are possibly going to allow the Turkish to come in against the Kurds.”

Calling Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a “thug” and “dictator,” Robertson said it was “nonsense” to call the Turkish leader an ally of America, claiming Erdogan is just “in for himself.”

Robertson, who has been a loyal Trump supporter, then took full aim at the president.

“The president, who allowed [Washington Post journalist Jamal] Khashoggi to be cut in pieces without any repercussions whatsoever, is now allowing the Christians and the Kurds to be massacred by the Turks,” he exclaimed. “The President of the United States is in danger of losing the mandate of heaven if he permits this to happen.”.......................................

An anti-Muslim hate group that claims to have close ties to the White House is hosting its annual gala at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, with tickets starting at $1,500.

ACT for America is going in a new direction with the Mar-a-Lago event in Palm Beach, Florida. The group has traditionally held its annual conference, including a gala, around Sept. 11 in the Washington, D.C., area. This year's ticket prices represent about a 400 percent increase over previous years, which ranged from $250 to $350.

The group is advertising the Nov. 7 gathering at Mar-a-Lago as a "National Security Dinner Gala" in which special political and legislative guests have been invited.

ACT appears to be experiencing somewhat of a brand shift as it tries maintain its anti-Muslim base while seeking a broader audience. On top of its anti-Muslim message, the group supports Trump’s border wall and his wish to abolish birthright citizenship, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States.

ACT founder and Chairman Brigitte Gabriel’s quest for mainstream acceptance by supporting broader Trump administration policies has caused a rift between the national organization and some of its chapters. Members of at least four ACT chapters have defected in the last three years after citing disapproval of national leadership as well as the organization’s direction.

Gabriel takes pride in pointing out ACT’s connections to the Trump administration. At the group’s national conference last year, she touted having a weekly “standing meeting” at the White House. “We have a president that likes us, President Trump,” she said. Details about the meetings are unknown..................................
