New Poll Suggests Sen. Susan Collins' Support for Brett Kavanaugh Will End Her Career

Source: lawandcrime.com

by Colin Kalmbacher | 12:38 pm, October 15th, 2019

A new poll, however, suggests that Collins has reached the twilight of her career due in large part to her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court — despite allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh and despite Collins’s pledge not to not vote for a nominee who demonstrated “hostility” to Roe v. Wade. Collins has said that when she spoke with Kavanaugh they talked “at great length about precedent and the application of stare decisis.” According to Collins, Kavanaugh said he “agreed with what Justice Roberts said at his nomination hearing, in which he said that [Roe] was settled law.”

Public Policy Polling (PPP) released data on Tuesday showing that only 35 percent of Pine Tree State voters currently approve of the job Collins is doing in the Senate while 50 percent of voters disapprove.

And in that poll she trails a generic Democratic Party politician by 44-41 percent. Those are strikingly poor numbers for an incumbent–much less an incumbent who has been a fixture of Maine politics for over three decades. Collins was first elected to the Senate in 1996.

The never-missed-a-vote Senator’s current numbers are a stark contrast to a similar poll conducted by PPP last September which showed her leading a generic Democrat by six points at 44-38 percent; representing a nine point swing against her favor....................

Sen. Lindsey Graham posts record $3.29M fundraising haul

Source: abc/AP

Tuesday, October 15th 2019

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) —........................

Graham's $3.29 million raised in the third quarter of this year is the most raised in a single quarter by any candidate in South Carolina's history, his campaign said Tuesday. The previous record was Jim DeMint's $3.125 million in 2004 for a U.S. Senate seat.

The campaign also said that the Republican's total is the most raised in this filing period by any Republican U.S. Senate candidate in the country.
............................................

Officials with Graham's reelection campaign said he has almost $8.4 million cash on hand. That's the third-highest cash-on-hand total for a Republican Senate candidate, after Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and John Cornyn of Texas.

Jaime Harrison, who is running as a Democrat for Graham's Senate seat, raised more than $2.2 million in the third quarter and has more than $2.6 million on hand............................................

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is backing Harrison, who has said he thinks it could take $10 million to win next year's race. Flipping a Senate seat from red to blue in South Carolina would be difficult and likely would require millions of dollars in fundraising, an area in which national-level groups like the DSCC would be crucial.....................................

Spoiled Parks: Top 12 National Parks Threatened by Trump Administration's Energy Agenda

https://www.npca.org/articles/2324-spoiled-parks-top-12-national-parks-threatened-by-trump-administration-s#

Spoiled Parks explores how current leasing policies have scarred landscapes and threaten future harm to clean air, cultural heritage, wildlife and tourism economies.

WASHINGTON – A report released today by the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) revealed 12 of America’s national parks most threatened by the Trump Administration’s aggressive energy policies on public lands. From Sequoia National Park to Chaco Culture National Historical Park, to Big Cypress National Preserve, Spoiled Parks explores how current leasing policies have scarred landscapes and threaten future harm to clean air, cultural heritage, wildlife and thriving tourism economies.

More than19 million acres of public land – an area larger than the state of West Virginia – have been offered for oil and gas leasing since the Trump administration took office. At the same time, the administration has drastically decreased opportunities for the public and key stakeholders, including the National Park Service, to have a voice in public land leasing decisions.

“The number and severity of actions this administration is taking against our public lands is putting our national parks in a situation from which they may never recover,”
said Matt Kirby, Director of Energy and Landscape Conservation for NPCA. “We must act now to prevent oil wells in the Chaco Culture landscape, blocked migration routes for Grand Teton wildlife and polluted air for people who visit and live near Sequoia. These twelve national parks and all parks across the country deserve better.”

More than 45 of the over 100 actions by the Trump administration that threaten our national parks and public lands also directly benefit extractive industries, including oil and gas development. The rampant leasing of public lands for drilling, combined with the administration’s systematic gutting of environmental protections, is causing potentially irreparable damage to the national parks. Decisions made by the administration are not only impacting parks and surrounding landscapes today but also painting a bleak future..................................

Testimony of ex-Trump aide implicates Mulvaney in coordinating Giuliani’s ‘rogue operation’ in Ukraine

Published 1 min ago on October 15, 2019

During nearly 10 hours of testimony to House impeachment investigators behind closed doors Monday, President Donald Trump’s former top Russia adviser Fiona Hill alleged that acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, former ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, and the president’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani were running a “rogue operation” in Ukraine that sought to bypass official channels to benefit Trump politically.

Hill’s testimony for the first time directed serious attention to the key role Mulvaney played in Trump’s months-long attempt to pressure Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, an effort that led House Democrats to launch an impeachment inquiry last month.

During her deposition, according to the Wall Street Journal, Hill “detailed a July 10 meeting she attended with senior Ukrainian officials, then-national security adviser John Bolton, and other U.S. officials in which the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, raised the issue of the investigations” into Biden.

“Both Ms. Hill and Mr. Bolton left the meeting with concerns about what had transpired, and Ms. Hill said Mr. Bolton instructed her to talk to [National Security Council] lawyer John Eisenberg,” the Journal reported. “Mr. Sondland also appeared to be coordinating his efforts with acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.”

Mulvaney’s role in Trump’s push for a Biden probe in Ukraine was first revealed last month, when reports emerged that the U.S. president ordered Mulvaney—who also runs the Office of Management and Budget—to put a hold on around $400 million in military aid to Ukraine.

Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General Bill Barr, and Trump White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney all may be subpoenaed by House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, says ex-Republican Congressman David Jolly.

“This has been methodical and is building up, I think, to subpoenaing Mike Pompeo, possibly the Vice President of the United States, Mick Mulvaney, and Bill Barr, because this touches them,” Jolly said Tuesday morning on MSNBC.

“And so all questions center on who knew what, when,” he added, speaking about Trump’s Ukraine extortion scandal, “who was in the room when these conversations took place.”
