Surprising no one: top Kobach priority for DHS is record number of deportations in first year.

Also: pretty careless document handling...

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, one of Donald Trump's potential picks for Department of Homeland Security secretary, might have revealed his plans for the department to the public while meeting with the president-elect.

A photo taken by an Associated Press photographer shows Kobach shaking Trump's hand while holding a binder and papers. The papers face the camera and, according to a report from The Topeka Capital-Journal, reveal plans to question "high-risk" immigrants over support for Sharia law and the U.S. Constitution. A bullet point says "Bar the Entry of Potential Terrorists."

The Topeka-Journal also noted that the document calls for an update and reintroduction of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration system, originally implemented after 9/11. It mentioned "extreme vetting questions" for "high-risk aliens" as well.

Kobach's papers also suggest eliminating Syrian refugee intake.

Reports on Sunday said Kobach and Trump met for just under an hour at Trump's private golf club in Bedminster, N.J. Kobach advised Trump on immigration throughout his campaign ............................

FEC questions Trump donations worth 1.3M

Source: FEC questions Trump donations worth $1.3M

By Mark Hensch - 11/21/16 01:35 PM EST

........................

The commission sent Timothy Jost, the campaign's treasurer, a letter Sunday seeking clarification of last month's financial filings.

The FEC’s message focused on two main concerns: whether Trump’s campaign accepted contributions from organizations not properly registered with the commission and whether donors giving to the Republican’s campaign exceeded legal donation limits.

“If any apparently prohibited contribution in question was incompletely or incorrectly disclosed, you should amend your original report with clarifying information,” it states. "In addition, please clarify whether the contribution(s) received from the referenced organization(s) is permissible.

“If any apparently excessive contribution in question was incompletely or incorrectly disclosed, you must amend your original report with the clarifying information.”

The FEC’s letter demands the Trump campaign refund any donations from unregistered organizations or that surpassed legal donating limits.................................

Trumps Win Was About Culture (not so much about the econony). Understand This.

I remember about a month or so before the election-there were polls/surveys telling us that the trumpsters were well off (or middle of the road folks) financially--at least not in the poor house. Maybe there is a lot to this article.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/11/21/trump-s-win-was-about-culture-understand-this.html

Trump’s Win Was About Culture. Understand This.
The media have way overstated the economic frustration of Trump’s voters. Their anger was cultural. If you get this wrong, you’ll get everything else wrong.

Jack Schwartz

......................The conventional wisdom explaining Trump’s victory is that the Democrats arrogantly embraced the politics of cultural identity while ignoring the economic frustrations of a disgruntled white majority that deserted them for someone who appealed to their justified grievances. It was the economy. But was it?

As we look more carefully at the voting results a different pattern emerges: In effect, the election was a contest between two coalitions reflecting not an equality gap but a cultural one. The first, and much ballyhooed, was the Democratic alliance of the upwardly mobile, the college educated, the urban, together with ethnic and social minorities who had often been on the fringes of American society. But there was a second coalition as well: the religious right, composed of Protestant evangelicals and conservative Catholics who felt their confessional principles were under assault by a state that had tilted far too secular; millions of NRA members who felt assailed by government intrusions on what they took to be their Second Amendment rights; political conservatives and right-wing ideologues who were affronted by the liberal policies of the Democrats; the affluent who had never left the Republican ranks and were appalled by the idea of sharing their earnings with the unworthy; and, yes, the disaffected left-behind rural whites who formed only a segment of this cohort, albeit an impassioned one.

In fact, this alliance was not primarily economic—although painting it so was politically potent—but cultural.
Many of its members were affluent, quite a few well off. They had little problem with technology and globalization, much less well-placed lobbying, from which many benefited. Their grievance was that they were being left behind not economically but socially. As Donald Trump astutely pointed out in cultivating them: “This is your last chance.” His brilliant appeal to “make America great again,” was, for most, not a call for economic redistribution or job opportunity but for social relevance. His message was nothing less than to literally Take America Back to an imagined past that was as longed for as it was illusory, a past where their values were ascendant and where the others knew their place.

Make no mistake, this election was not primarily about the economy. For Trump’s adherents, it was about nothing less than saving the soul of the nation. Their quarrel with government was not that they were doing badly but that “the others” were making inroads, catching up, and, if unchecked, they would somehow surpass the Real Americans. The impulses of Trump’s legions were not racial, but tribal. What was “elite” about their foes was not their finances but their fluidity, their openness to change, which conservatives saw as a challenge not to their pocketbooks but a threat to their belief system.

Which is why the passions of this election had the force of a religious war and Donald Trump was seen as a savior. It explains why so many people voted for him, well aware of his deficiencies and how unfit he was for the White House. In religious terms, a tool of divine deliverance may be flawed, but it must still be wielded. Trump was such a scourge. We will see how he does the Lord’s work..................

Green Day continued their recent streak of political commentary during the group’s performance on Sunday night at the American Music Awards, slamming President-elect Donald Trump.

The band – whose latest album, Revolution Radio, recently debuted at No. 1 – took the stage to perform “Bang Bang,” the lead single off the collection.

In the middle of the song, they began a chant, singing, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!” over and over again........................

WASHINGTON ........................

.......................Vice President-elect Mike Pence's political career, for example, has long been supported by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, which is based in his home state of Indiana. The drugmaker, through its political action committee and employees, is Pence's third-largest all-time political contributor, according to the independent Center for Responsive Politics.

Pence is leading the Trump transition.

Other key figures in Trump's circle of advisers have included a former executive at drugmakers Pfizer and Celgene and the chairman of Williams & Jensen, a Washington lobbying firm. According to federal reports, Williams and Jensen's clients in recent years have included 11 of the world's largest drugmakers, including Pfizer, Novartis, AstraZeneca, Merck and Bayer.

In contrast to his silence on drug prices, Trump displayed little hesitation blasting them when he was campaigning.

He railed against the political power of the drug industry, which he said was responsible for blocking Medicare from using its bargaining power to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors.

"They have a fantastic lobby. They take care of all of the senators, the congressmen," Trump said at a Republican primary debate in March.

Trump's campaign platform included a proposal to give Americans more access to lower-priced, imported drugs, which his campaign said would "bring more options to consumers."

..............................

In September, drug prices shot up 7 percent over the past year, the sharpest increase in 24 years, according to the Altarum Institute, a nonprofit research and consulting organization. Overall health care prices were up 2.1 percent.

White supremacists confer in Washington to influence Trump

Source: raw story

Lisa Mascaro
Tribune Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — The buttoned-down millennials, in their dark suits and ties, settled in for the long conference day ahead.

They came to Washington to position their interests at the forefront of the political agenda. Their sponsor was the alt-right think tank called the National Policy Institute.

The group at the conference was almost entirely young men.

This was the white nationalist lobby — the alt-right — coming to town for a victory lap after Donald Trump's election, assuming what they see as their rightful place influencing the new administration.

"An awakening among everyone has occurred with this Trump election," said Richard Spencer, president of the white nationalist think tank, as he opened the conference. "We're not quite the establishment now, but I think we should start acting like it."...............................

Source: raw story

20 Nov 2016 at 21:34 ET

.................According to a report from Mediaite, reporters at Obama’s press conference in Lima, Peru asked Obama who his pick was for Democratic Leader. Obama reiterated his support of Pelosi as a “remarkable leader.” However, he continued, saying that Democrats in the House and Senate should give the new Donald Trump administration a “hearing.”

“I certainly don’t want them to do what Mitch McConnell did when I was elected,” President Obama said. “Meet the day of and say our sole objective is to not cooperate with him on anything even if the country is about to go into a depression so that we can gain seats in the mid-terms and defeat him.”

Sen. McConnell (R-KY) announced that his single goal as the leader for the Republican Senate was to make President Obama a one-term president. Republicans proceeded to block all legislation coming out of the White House. Last year, when conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died, Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, but Republicans have refused to give him a hearing claiming Obama doesn’t deserve to nominate three justices. No president in United States history has ever had his justice denied a hearing.

“My advice to Democrats is, know what you care about and what you stand for and fight for your principles even if it’s hard fight,” Obama said....................................

I am glad that Obama stood up for Pelosi.

I would like nothing better than for Dems to just say no--but on the other hand--letting the bills come to the floor and having a public discussion is fine by me. A public airing is good for all.
