The System Isn’t ‘Rigged’ Against Sanders

Clinton’s winning because more Democrats want her to be the nominee.

A week ago, New York Daily News columnist and Bernie Sanders supporter Shaun King tweeted the following about the Democratic caucuses in Washington, which took place in late March:

Whether King intended it or not, he implied that caucuses — which often require hours of participation and mean lower turnout — are representative of what would happen if a larger electorate had its say. Well, a funny thing happened in Washington on Tuesday: The state held a mail-in, beauty-contest primary — so voting was easy, but no delegates were at stake. (The Associated Press has declared Hillary Clinton the winner.) The results are still being finalized, but Clinton leads by about 6 percentage points with more than 700,000 votes counted. Sanders won the Washington caucuses, which had 230,000 participants, by 46 percentage points.

So, turnout was much higher in the Washington primary than in the caucuses, and Clinton did much better. Something similar happened in Nebraska, where Clinton lost the early March caucuses by 14 percentage points and won the early May primary, in which no delegates were awarded, by 7 points.

Nebraska and Washington are part of a pattern. As Sanders fans claim that the Democratic primary system is rigged against their candidate and that Sanders wins when turnout is higher, they fail to point out that Sanders has benefited tremendously from low-turnout caucuses. Indeed, if all the caucuses were primaries, Clinton would be winning the Democratic nomination by an even wider margin than she is now.

Let’s start out with the real-world numbers. Here are the delegate and vote totals by contest, including caucuses and primaries, so far:...............................

Shopko outsourced Wisconsin jobs after taking money from WEDC

Shopko outsourced Wisconsin jobs after taking money from WEDC

MADISON (WKOW) -- Another company that has received millions of dollars in tax credits from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has since outsourced Wisconsin jobs overseas.

Since 2012, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has awarded $2 million to Specialty Retail Shops Holding Corporation, a subsidiary of Sun Capital that serves as the parent company to Shopko, which is headquartered in Green Bay. $1 million of that award was for job creation tax credits.
.......................

This is just the latest example of a company outsourcing Wisconsin jobs after receiving taxpayer dollars from WEDC...............

A 27 News investigation from July 2014 found that Eaton Corp. had received over $190,000 in WEDC tax credits despite laying off 163 employees at its Cooper Power Systems plant in Pewaukee in April 2013. The company moved those jobs to Mexico.

.................................

After Thursday's revelations about Shopko, WEDC Board member and State Representative Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) told 27 News it troubles him that the same pattern continues.

"Our goal was to put the onus on the company to make us informed when they are outsourcing jobs and I'm not clear that that's going on now," said Rep. Barca. "But I think that we do need to tighten our systems."

A WEDC spokesperson told 27 News that the current contract for Specialty Retail Stores Holding Corp. expires in October and if the company fails to meet the deliverables of their contract, including not maintaining jobs in Wisconsin, the agency will recover funds through the penalty provisions contained in the agreement.

Six Numbers That Show Why Clinton Is Still the Favorite in 2016

The 2016 general election race is now a virtual tie. ....................

And the big question on everyone's lips for the next 160-some days will be: So, who's gonna win?

The most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal polls shows Clinton clinging to a narrow lead.

But a deep analysis of data from the poll shows that Clinton is still currently the more likely of the two candidates to emerge as the winner when the voting's all over on Nov. 8, 2016.

............... here are six numbers that show why — right now — Hillary Clinton is better positioned to win the presidency than her GOP rival.

The advantage for a generic Democratic candidate over a generic Republican is 4 percentage points

One of the most basic questions we ask in every NBC/WSJ poll is whether or not voters want to see a Republican or a Democrat elected president, no matter who the nominees of each party may be. ..............................
Nothing about the unpopular Clinton or the even-less-popular Trump is "generic," but Dems have the advantage on this fundamental measure of party strength.

The Democratic Party is nearly breaking even on favorability, while the GOP is under water.

Let's be real: It isn't a fun time to be a party establishment type, no matter what side of the aisle you're on. Both parties are pretty unpopular, but Democrats are doing a lot better than their GOP rivals. ................................

Barack Obama's approval rating is 51 percent.

Hillary Clinton is adamant that she's running for her own first term, not Barack Obama's third term. But as the Democratic Party nominee, a key part of her message is building on Obama's vision and the "progress" his administration has promoted. Even as majority of the electorate — 53 percent — say they're interested in a change candidate, the man currently steering the ship has hit his highest approval rating since his second inauguration. Obama's high rating — which includes support from a majority of independents and women as well as 82 percent of Sanders voters — means that he'll be a powerful surrogate for Clinton once the Democratic primary is in the history books.

Trump is under-performing with white women by 10 points.

It's no secret that Trump has a problem with female voters. But he *does* enjoy a slight advantage over Hillary Clinton when it comes to only white women, leading with 46 percent to Clinton's 42 percent. That might look like a boon for Trump until you compare his share of the white female vote by the margin won by Mitt Romney four years ago. .....................

Trump's showing a nine-point drop in the suburbs.

Plenty of experts argue that the rural-urban cultural divide is so deeply entrenched that the suburbs are where the election will be won and lost. And, as he is with white women, Donald Trump is showing significant weakness with this slice of electorate. In 2012, Obama won urban suburbs 57 percent to 41 percent, according to NBC's Dante Chinni. Clinton is matching Obama's performance at 57 percent now, but Trump has slid to 32 percent. Swing suburban areas ........................

Clinton has a 10-point advantage on the commander-in-chief test
.

This poll showed that Trump has very significant advantages when it comes to questions about economic issues. He handily beats Clinton when voters are asked which candidate would better on trade, dealing with Wall Street or managing the economy. But Clinton has a ten point advantage (43 percent to 33 percent) when voters are asked who would be the best commander-in-chief. Yes, Clinton's disadvantage on the economy is a big deal, particularly for the significant portion of voters who still aren't feeling any impact from the economic recovery. But an advantage on the commander-in-chief test is something any candidate covets, particularly in courting late deciders and swing voters.......................

Democrats pile on Bernie Sanders over "bulls***" Donald Trump debate

Bernie Sanders' openness to debate Donald Trump ahead of California's primary -- an idea first floated during a "Jimmy Kimmel Live" interview with the presumptive GOP nominee Wednesday -- has some Democratic lawmakers fuming.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, told Politico Thursday that the possibility of a debate was "bulls***."

"That confirms what we've been saying," Manchin told the news site. "Why would you expect Bernie should be considerate or be nice or be working to bring everyone together? Why? He's not a Democrat."

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose state holds its primary on June 7, posited that the debate was a publicity ploy.

"What he's trying to do," Feinstein told Politico, "is bring attention to himself."...............

Report Found Powell Also Used Private Email On An “Exclusive Basis”
Research ››› 7 hours 36 min ago ››› MATT GERTZ

Journalists are suggesting that a recent State Department report proves that Hillary Clinton was the first secretary of state to exclusively use a private email account for government work, contradicting Clinton’s statements. In fact, the report states that former Secretary of State Colin Powell also used a personal email account “on an exclusive basis for day-to-day operations.”
State Department OIG Report: Clinton, Powell Both Exclusively Used Private Email

Office Of Inspector General Report: Powell “Did Not Employ A Department Email Account.”

According to a report from the U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General (OIG) on email records management and cybersecurity requirements: “During Secretary Powell’s tenure, the Department introduced for the first time unclassified desktop email and access to the Internet on a system known as OpenNet, which remains in use to this day. Secretary Powell did not employ a Department email account, even after OpenNet’s introduction.” [U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General report, “Office of the Secretary: Evaluation of Email Records Management and Cybersecurity Requirements,” May 2016]

OIG Report: Clinton And Powell Both “Used Non-Department Systems On An Exclusive Basis.”
According to the OIG report: “OIG identified many examples of staff using personal email accounts to conduct official business; however, OIG could only identify three cases where officials used non-Departmental systems on an exclusive basis for day-to-day operations. These include former Secretaries Powell and Clinton, as well as Jonathan Scott Gration, a former Ambassador to Kenya.” [U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General report, “Office of the Secretary: Evaluation of Email Records Management and Cybersecurity Requirements,” May 2016]

Clinton Campaign: Clinton “Thought It Was Allowed, As Commercial [Account] Was For Powell.” On Twitter, Clinton press secretary Brian Fallon stated: “Our take on State IG report being misreported in places so want to explain. When we liken Clinton’s email use to other secretaries… We mean that just as she used nongov't account for work, so did others at State. And that's bc rules did not bar use of nongovt email … Having said that, it's true her nongovt account was on her family's server, as opposed to commercial email account. That was distinct … But she still thought it was allowed, as commercial acct was for Powell. Now, though, State says it would've urged against that setup … To which we say, we agree it was a mistake. If she had chance to do it again, she would have used a state.gov account.” [Twitter.com, 5/26/16]..................
