Protests broke out near the White House Saturday, with demonstrators pushing down multiple security barricades and some clashing with police, according to multiple reports.

WTOP reporter Alejandro Alvarez shared video from the scene Saturday, showing protesters pushing against a crowd of police officers.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) shared video of the protest earlier Saturday, in which protesters can be heard chanting, “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

Protests have erupted nationwide over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died earlier this week in police custody after bystander video showed an officer kneeling on his neck.

DC mayor blasts 'gross' Trump tweet threatening 'vicious dogs' at White House

Source: the hill

By J. Edward Moreno - 05/30/20 02:15 PM EDT

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) fired back Saturday at President Trump's tweets threatening to handle protesters demonstrating in front of the White House with "vicious dogs" and the "most ominous weapons" if they breached the building's fence.

.........................

“I thought the president’s remarks were gross. To make a reference to vicious dogs is no subtle reminder to African Americans of segregationists who let dogs out on innocent [people],” Bowser said at a press conference Saturday.

............................

“These attacks are an attack on humanity. They are an attack on black Americans, and they make my city less safe,” Bowser said.
...................
................

Earlier Saturday, Trump accused Bowser of refusing to allow the city’s police department to help the Secret Service during Friday's protest outside the White House. The Secret Service later confirmed that D.C. police officers were at the protest.

“My police department will always protect D.C. and all who live and visit here. In fact, that's exactly what we did last night. Nobody needed to ask the Metropolitan Police to get involved because they already have,” Bowser said Saturday, referring to the District’s municipal police force.

OMG. Trump lies and accuses Bowser of not allowing the DC police dept help with the crowd. But she corrected him--and so did the Secret Service. Trump just makes stuff up. damn

Every Single Worker On One Tennessee Farm Has Tested Positive For COVID-19

Advocates are sounding an alarm bell—it's going to get worse as the harvest around the country ramps up.
By Joan McCarter

"Every Single Worker Has Covid at One U.S. Farm on Eve of Harvest." Read that headline one more time: "Every Single Worker Has Covid at One U.S. Farm on Eve of Harvest." That farm is in Tennessee. A farm in New Jersey has more than 50 workers with the virus, and in a neighboring county nearly 60 more on another farm have been ill. An Oneida, New York greenhouse operation growing tomatoes and strawberries reported nearly 170 infected workers.

These are among the most vulnerable essential workers in the U.S. Essential because they're providing our food. Vulnerable because so many are noncitizen immigrants who don't have access the medical care and live, work, and travel in cramped, crowded situations. Advocates are sounding an alarm bell—it's going to get worse as the harvest around the country ramps up. "We're watching very, very nervously—the agricultural harvest season is only starting now," Michael Dale, executive director of the Northwest Workers' Justice Project in Portland, Oregon, told Bloomberg. "I don't think we're ready. I don't think we're prepared."

"There is woefully inadequate surveillance of what's happening with Covid-19 and farm workers," echoed Erik Nicholson, an official with the United Farm Workers. "There is no central reporting, which is crazy because these are essential businesses." Henderson Farms in Evansville, Tennessee—where every worker has the virus—said they tested the workers out of an "abundance of caution," and now all of them are in isolation on the farm. Most are asymptomatic. "We take our responsibility to protect the essential workers feeding the nation through the pandemic seriously," Henderson Farms Co. said in a statement to Bloomberg. "In addition to continuing our policy of providing free healthcare, we have implemented additional measures to support workers directly impacted by Covid-19, including those in isolation as per the latest public health guidelines. We are working closely with public health officials in Rhea County, Tennessee, to ensure we can continue to deliver our high standard of care as we support our workers and our community through these unprecedented times."

The only action the Trump administration has taken has been to waive interview requirements for guest workers coming into the U.S. and to exempt farmworkers from the temporary immigration ban it has imposed. There are not specific protections in place for the migrant farmworkers. Last week, Rep. Jimmy Panetta, a California Democrat, and 71 of his colleagues wrote to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, urging that protections for them be included in the next response bill. They want free testing for all farmworkers, training and education in every applicable language, personal protective equipment including masks for every worker, and hand-washing stations. .....................................................

In a rapid-fire series of tweets on Saturday morning, Donald Trump boasted about the security being given to him by the Secret Service as protests grip the streets of Washington, D.C., and warned protesters to stay away from the White House.

The president also promised anyone who breached security they would be met with ‘”the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons.”

Dakota County, suburbs join Minneapolis, St. Paul in ordering weekend curfews
The curfews begin at 8 p.m. Friday and extend till either Sunday or early Monday.

May 29, 2020 — 7:23pm

Dakota County and the cities of Bloomington, Edina and Roseville have joined the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in imposing a curfew starting 8 p.m. Friday.

The curfews will last until 6 a.m. Saturday, and then go into effect again at 8 p.m. Saturday, expiring at 6 a.m. Sunday. Roseville’s runs until early Monday.

“During the curfew, all persons must not travel on any public street or in any public place,” according to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s resolution.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter declared a state of local emergency Friday and announced the curfew, as well as inviting everyone to observe an hour of prayer from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The curfews do not extend to people traveling to or from work, emergency services, law enforcement, people seeking emergency medical care or fleeing danger, the homeless and the news media, according to a parallel order from Gov. Tim Walz........................

“All Minnesotans in Minneapolis and St. Paul are urged to voluntarily comply,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. “Peace officers will enforce the curfew and arrest those who refuse to comply.”

Violations of the cities’ curfew are a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine.

Dakota County Commissioner Joe Atkins said the county ordered a curfew because “here is a well-founded belief by Sheriff [Tim] Leslie and Dakota County leaders that a heightened risk of significant harm to local residents and businesses exists.................................

Joe Biden Says He's Spoken With George Floyd's Family, Calls For Police Reform

Source: huff post

05/29/2020 03:06 pm ET

The former vice president censured President Trump for his “incendiary tweets.”

Promising to bring real police reform if elected president, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said Friday that he had spoken with the family of George Floyd, the African American man killed by Minneapolis police officers on Monday.

“The original sin of this country still stains our nation today,” the former vice president said in a video message from his Delaware home, referring to more than 400 years of “Black men, Black women, Black children” whose potential was “wiped out unnecessarily.”

“Everyday African Americans go about their lives with constant anxiety and trauma wondering who will be next ... The anger and frustration and the exhaustion is undeniable.”

Protests broke out nationwide after video showed a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck despite his pleas that he could not breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was fired from his post after the incident and taken into custody Friday on murder and manslaughter charges...................................
