Trump’s 60th presidential rally received 2 1/2 hours of cable news coverage before it even began

June 19, 2019 2:26 PM EDT

Melisaa Joskow / Media Matters

President Donald Trump held his 60th rally since becoming president last night in Orlando, FL, and while the event was virtually identical to his past 59 rallies, the media was still fooled into giving Trump and his rally significant coverage -- before it even began.

............................................

....................

Even though some outlets acknowledged that Trump has actually been running for reelection since the day he was inaugurated, media still flocked to cover last night’s event, giving it significant attention throughout the day. In the lead-up to the rally, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News all had extensive pre-rally coverage featuring multiple correspondents reporting live from the rally site. In total, the cable news networks devoted nearly 2 1/2 hours of coverage to Trump’s rally before the president even set foot on stage. Fox News had nearly an hour and a half of pre-rally coverage, while CNN and MSNBC devoted 28 minutes and 35 minutes, respectively.

When it came to airing the rally itself, MSNBC avoided airing the event, similar to the way it has treated Trump’s previous rallies in 2019. Fox News aired the rally in its entirety, and CNN -- which had only aired a cumulative minute and a half of the president’s first five 2019 rallies -- aired eight minutes of it. CNN’s Brian Stelter noted in his newsletter that while CNN and Fox News both aired the beginning of Trump’s speech live, “after five minutes it was clear that Trump didn't have anything new to say.”

But demonstrating that the media have learned nothing from 2016, cable news networks subjected their audiences to endless images of Air Force One, the stadium attendees, and the empty podium along with repetitive chyrons reading “Trump departs,” “crowds filling arena,” and “Trump lands in Orlando”:........................................

Trump says Bernie, Biden look 'tired crazy' and 'exhausted'

Trump is reaching out to Hispanics--this is his first interview for a Spanish speaking media.

President Trump, in an interview with Telemundo set to air on Thursday night, says top Democratic presidential contenders Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden look "tired crazy" and "exhausted."

"Bernie looks like he's had it," Trump said. "Bernie looks crazy, but he always did. But he looks like a tired crazy right now."

On Biden, Trump said, "he looks like he's just exhausted."

"I don't know what happened to him but he is exhausted and he doesn't do any work, he's not working," Trump added. "One thing I found out about this job, to do it right, and I've done it right — you have to work hard."

Sanders and Biden will be standing next to each other on the second night of NBC News' Democratic debate next week. Trump, 72, has repeatedly taken aim at the stamina of his older opponents, Sanders, who is 77, and Biden, who is 76.

In an interview with ABC News last week, Trump said he "probably" averages "four or five hours" of sleep every night. Trump has come under fire for his work schedule in recent months after Axios reported in February that nearly 60 percent of Trump's schedule is unstructured "Executive Time." The president often spends the first five hours of his day watching TV, reading newspapers and phoning advisers to discuss news items, the report said.

too slow for me.

Pelosi ally, freshmen Democrats join calls for Trump impeachment

By Laurie Kellman Associated Press,June 20, 2019, an hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three more Democrats have joined a slowly growing group calling for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, including a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a Democrat who flipped a Republican district.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a congressional veteran, said in a Twitter video that Trump ‘‘certainly has committed all kinds of offenses that meet the standard’’ for a formal charge by the House. Rep. Sean Casten told the Chicago Sun-Times that he wants Congress to use ‘‘every tool’’ to investigate Trump, even if that means paying a political price in the 2020 elections. And California Rep. Tony Cardenas tweeted that he came to the decision after studying special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

The two Illinois lawmakers spoke out Wednesday evening, shortly after former White House aide Hope Hicks refused to answer House Judiciary Committee questions about Trump during his presidency. The new statements highlight a slowly growing chorus of calls from almost 70 House members for an impeachment inquiry, though Democrats still oppose such a move. And Pelosi has resisted launching official proceedings without broad bipartisan support.

On Wednesday night, Schakowsky left that camp.

‘‘The House of Representatives should begin an impeachment inquiry officially, because President Trump certainly has committed all kinds of offenses that meet the standard of impeachment,’’ she said in the tweeted video.

Casten on the same day set himself apart from many of the Democrats’ most vulnerable freshmen who helped flip the House from Republican control in 2018.

‘‘I am in favor of initiating an impeachment inquiry,’’ he told the Chicago Sun-Times in remarks confirmed by a spokeswoman.

All three lawmakers said launching an impeachment inquiry would give the House more legal strength to compel information from a president who has vowed not to cooperate with Democratic investigations.

‘‘We cannot allow Trump to continue to obstruct Congress’s investigation and prevent us from getting to the truth,’’ Cardenas said in a statement posted on Twitter. ‘‘We have come up against a wall. It is time to break down that wall.’’....................................................

Anti-LGBTQ Attorney Matthew Kacsmaryk Confirmed as Federal Judge

Source: advocate.com

June 19 2019 4:37 PM EDT Updated June 19 2019 4:37 PM EDT

Matthew Kacsmaryk, who has endorsed the view that being transgender is a “delusion” and referred to the Equality Act as the “inequality act,” was confirmed by the U.S. Senate today to be a federal district judge for the Northern District of Texas.

Kacsmaryk was confirmed to the lifetime appointment by a vote of 52-46, with Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine joining united Democrats in voting against him, the Washington Blade reports. Collins, often considered a moderate, drew criticism for her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court last year, but she said she would oppose Kacsmaryk for his stances against LGBTQ and reproductive rights.

LGBTQ groups and other civil rights organizations denounced his confirmation. Matthew Kacsmaryk is among the most anti-LGBTQ judicial nominees put forward by the Trump-Pence administration,” said a statement issued by Human Rights Campaign Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “He has a long history of virulently anti-LGBTQ opinions and positions — including his deeply disturbing opposition to same-sex marriage, his vocal hostility towards legal protections for gender identity and sexual orientation, and his shocking refusal to recognize the basic humanity of transgender people. Kacsmaryk fails the basic expectation of impartiality and commitment to equality under the law that we demand of every member of the bench. The Human Rights Campaign will continue to raise the alarm about Kacsmaryk and future nominees who refuse to protect the rights of all Americans.”

“Matthew Kacsmaryk’s confirmation is going to cause suffering to millions of people in Texas, including many vulnerable individuals,” added Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron. “Kacsmaryk harbors strong hostility to LGBTQ people and to women’s rights. Now, not only will he have the opportunity to curtail equal rights for millions within these communities, but individual women and LGBTQ people who come into his courtroom seeking justice will have to face a judge who has expressed contempt for them. As a judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk is going to ruin lives, and there is no way to minimize that very sad fact.”

In addition to his remarks about the Equality Act and signing on to a letter that called being transgender is a “delusion,” Kacsmaryk has opposed marriage equality and the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive coverage mandate, among other far-right positions.

Kacsmaryk is currently deputy general counsel at First Liberty Institute, a legal nonprofit based in Plano, Texas, that focuses on “religious liberty” cases, which at First Liberty generally means opposing LGBTQ and reproductive rights. He has represented the Oregon bakery, Sweet Cakes by Melissa, that refused to provide a wedding cake for a same-sex couple and was sued for discrimination. After an Oregon administrative agency and state courts held that the bakery indeed violated the state’s antidiscrimination law, Sweet Cakes appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which Monday sent the case back to the state courts for reconsideration. He also filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a similar case, supporting Masterpiece Cakeshop’s right to deny service to customers based on religious objections.........................................

Worker bonuses plummet as corporations rake in billions from GOP tax scam

Rich corporations got a permanent tax break from Republicans last year, while workers barely got anything.

After a flurry of press releases last year touting all the bonuses that would come when Republicans passed their tax scam, it turns out corporations scaled back on worker bonuses in 2019, and drastically. But they're still reaping the benefits of the GOP tax scam, according to a Tuesday Wall Street Journal report.

Compared to this time last year, worker bonuses have dropped by a stunning 24%, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The drop is the largest decrease on record, dating back to 2005.

Since the tax scam was signed into law in December 2017, Trump and Republicans have highlighted anecdotal evidence from corporate press releases to promote its greatness. In January 2018, for example, the Trump administration praised Walmart for giving out bonuses, even as the company was closing more than 60 stores.

But now the bonuses "appear to largely have been a one-time windfall," and "were a short-term jolt rather than a sustained change," according to the Wall Street Journal..................................

Treasury has shelved plans to swap in Harriet Tubman for Andrew Jackson

By Kate Davidson [June 19, 2019 6:16 pm ET

The Senate’s top Democrat asked the Treasury Department watchdog to investigate how the agency decided to shelve plans to put Harriet Tubman’s image on the $20 bill.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on Wednesday said he doubted Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s explanation that complex security features were holding up a redesign until late next decade and asked the Treasury’s inspector general to review whether political considerations played a role.

Planned Parenthood of St. Louis one step closer to losing license over state pelvic exam regulation

Source: cbs

Last Updated Jun 19, 2019 7:58 PM EDT

St. Louis — Planned Parenthood of St. Louis, Missouri's last remaining abortion clinic, told CBS News exclusively that it will no longer conduct a second pelvic exam that state regulators have recently mandated. Planned Parenthood doctors say the examination is "unethical" and stand by the decision even as it moves the clinic one step closer toward losing its license.

The abortion clinic said Wednesday that it would no longer comply with regulators' interpretation of state law regarding the pelvic exams. Beginning soon, doctors at the clinic said they would conduct a pelvic exam only at the time of the procedure — which is when they deem it medically relevant — not at the initial consultation 72 hours prior.

The announcement came just two days before a judge-mandated deadline for the state's health department to make a final decision on whether to renew Planned Parenthood's abortion license.

"We are choosing to provide the best quality, patient centered care that we've always provided at Planned Parenthood," said Dr. David Eisenberg, the clinic's medical director, in an interview with CBS News correspondent Meg Oliver. "And that includes doing things that are driven by science, by evidence, and by what's medically appropriate."...........................................

BREAKING: Judge Wants Another Crack At Census Case After Revelation Of New Evidence

Source: TPM

By Tierney Sneed June 19, 2019 4:24 pm

A federal judge wants to reconsider his ruling that the Trump administration’s move to add the census citizenship question was not racially discriminatory, now that the challengers in the case have put forward explosive new evidence that suggests it was.

U.S. District Judge George Hazel, who presided over the census citizenship case brought in Maryland, issued an order Wednesday that said that the challengers raised a “substantial issue” with the new evidence. It will ultimately be up to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where the case has been appealed, to decide whether to send the case back to him so that he can consider changing his ruling in light of the new evidence.

Hazel order is the latest dramatic turn in what has been an extraordinary legal fight over Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’ decision to add the question. It sets the stage for a scenario where the Department of Justice and the question’s legal challengers are still hashing it out over whether the question is discriminatory, even after the Supreme Court rules on other aspects of the question’s legality.

Whether it stays on the census has incredible consequences for how political power, as well as government resources, are doled out across the country. A broad spectrum of experts, including the Census Bureau itself, has warned it will discourage immigrant participation, causing an undercount of those communities. Furthermore, the new evidence, and other evidence already in the case, strongly point to a plan to use the data from the question to exclude noncitizens altogether from the redistricting count. Such an overhaul would greatly diminish the representation Latinos and other immigrant groups get in government, while further shifting the electoral advantage to Republicans........................................

Lines disappeared and arena seats remained before Trump took stage in Orlando

Orlando Sentinel | Jun 18, 2019 | 9:53 PM

President Trump kicked off his re-election campaign in Orlando on Tuesday night to an Amway Center that was nearly filled to capacity.

The arena has a capacity of about 20,000. In his speech to supporters at Amway, Trump said 120,000 people had requested the free tickets to the event.

Whether it was the weather – hot earlier in the day, rainy in the afternoon – or people just wanting invitations to the historic event for keepsakes, it did appear there were fewer people than were planned. The planned overflow area across from the arena was virtually empty as the rally began inside the arena.

About an hour before Trump was scheduled to speak, the long lines snaking around the Amway Center in downtown Orlando were gone and people could easily walk into the event.

A photo taken by an Orlando Sentinel photographer at 7 p.m. showed a large section of empty seats in the upper deck.
