Rachel Maddow just nailed it

I missed her show tonight. --will try to catch the rerun later.

Rachel Maddow just nailed it
Bill Palmer | 9:40 pm EDT June 22, 2020

When Bill Barr tried to replace SDNY U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman with his own lackey this weekend, the end result was that Berman resigned but put his own respected Deputy in charge instead. At the time, Palmer Report pointed out that this was a total swing and miss for Barr, in what is now becoming a string of swings and misses. He’s as evil as ever, but he keeps proving himself more inept at his evil.

During her show tonight, Rachel Maddow drew the same conclusion. Her succinct way of putting things: “It does seem like Bill Barr’s wheels are coming off.” Barr has failed to stop John Bolton’s book, Barr has failed to bring an attempted criminal case against Trump nemesis Andrew McCabe, Barr has failed thus far to get the case against Trump ally Michael Flynn dropped, and Barr failed to get Roger Stone’s prison sentence reduced.

It’s becoming more clear that as evil as Bill Barr is, he’s not particularly skilled at this kind of villainy. That doesn’t mean we can take him lightly. But............................

Temperatures in an Arctic Siberian town hit 100 degrees, a new high

Source: msn.com

An unprecedented heatwave in one of the coldest places on Earth just reached a distressing milestone.

Temperatures in the small Siberian town of Verkhoyansk hit 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, according to public-facing weather data. It's a record-high temperature in one of the fastest-warming places in the world.

............................

Verkhoyansk sits on the Yana River in the Arctic Circle and, during the winter, is considered one of the world's coldest towns -- in 1892, temperatures dropped to -90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Average June temperatures in Verkhoyansk reach a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, so the new record-high temperature is alarming.

Distressing signs continued Monday, when satellite footage showed multiple wildfires in Siberia near the Arctic Circle. Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service senior scientist Mark Parrington noted that the number and intensity of Siberian wildfires has increased considerably, too.

......................

Also in May, permafrost that melted beneath tank supports resulted in a "massive" diesel spill in the region, which could spill into the Arctic Ocean.

The dramatic swings in temperature in northwest Siberia last month would happen only once in 100,000 years if it weren't for climate change, climate scientist Martin Stendel said.

.............
.................

Plus, NOAA's 2019 Arctic Report Card found that thawing permafrost in the Arctic could be releasing up to 600 million tons of net carbon into the atmosphere per year. ...........................

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has hit out at Wall Street investors for donating to her most prominent primary challenger, who is looking to unseat the progressive firebrand in the June 23 contest.

Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, 53, has won the backing of the conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce and multiple powerful Wall Street figures—including Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, according to The Financial Times—in her effort to defeat the 30-year-old freshman congresswoman.

Ocasio-Cortez warned her supporters Sunday they "CANNOT take this seat for granted," in a Facebook post urging people to vote. "Wall Street is pouring millions of dollars to unseat me in this Tuesday's election," Ocasio-Cortez said of the primary. "That's what happens when you put people before profit."

Caruso-Cabrera has gathered some $2 million in funding since announcing her campaign to unseat Ocasio-Cortez, who since entering the House of Representatives in 2019 has become one of the most prominent progressive politicians in Washington. This has also made her a prime target for Republicans, including President Donald Trump.

..................

She is trying to peel away moderate Democratic and independent voters who might be uncomfortable with Ocasio-Cortez's more progressive proposals, including the Green New Deal, higher taxes for the wealthiest Americans, and her support for the movement to "defund" the police in the wake of George Floyd's killing........................................

Coronavirus By the Numbers: Protests Against Police Brutality As COVID-19 Cases Reach 7.9 Million Worldwide

A plurality of people who call Jacksonville, Florida, home don't want President Donald Trump and Republicans holding their national convention in their town this summer.

That's according to a new poll commissioned by an anti-Trump group composed of GOP figures: Republican Voters Against Trump, which is tied to Republicans for the Rule of Law that consistently advocates for the president's removal from office.

Nearly half of voters surveyed—49 percent—said they do not support the Republican National Convention being held in Jacksonville, while 39 percent said they do. And 12 percent had no opinion. The survey also found that Trump trails presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in a head-to-head match-up: 51 percent to 43 percent...........................

.................Fears over the ongoing pandemic appear to be front and center for Jacksonville residents' opposition to hosting the RNC.

Most of the surveyed voters—61 percent—indicated they are "concerned" that the convention could create a new virus outbreak in the local community. Thirty-nine percent said they were not concerned..................................

I imagine no one asked the citizens of Jacksonville if they wanted the convention.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump is heading to Arizona, where a spike in coronavirus cases has raised alarm and prompted new rules.

Trump will speak to student supporters in Phoenix, where the city council and mayor have made face masks mandatory for people inside a building less than six feet away from others.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego told CNN that she hopes everyone attending the event will wear a mask -- including the President, who has previously claimed that masks don't do much in battling the virus, in direct contradiction to health experts.

“It is not safe right now to have any large events, whether it be the President of the United States or large indoor sporting event,” Gallego said.

Alarming spike: Arizona's cases have nearly doubled in 14 days. ................................

WHO reports largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases

Source: AP

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases by its count, at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours.

The UN health agency said Brazil led the way with 54,771 cases tallied and the U.S. next at 36,617. Over 15,400 came in in India.

Experts said rising case counts can reflect multiple factors including more widespread testing as well as broader infection.

Overall in the pandemic, WHO reported 8,708,008 cases — 183,020 in the last 24 hours — with 461,715 deaths worldwide, with a daily increase of 4,743.

More than two-thirds of those new deaths were reported in the Americas.

In Spain, officials ended a national state of emergency after three months of lockdown, allowing its 47 million residents to freely travel around the country for the first time since March 14. The country also dropped a 14-day quarantine for visitors from Britain and the 26 European countries that allow visa-free travel.

But there was only a trickle of travelers at Madrid-Barajas Airport, which on a normal June day would be bustling.

To be honest, if I saw these high powered guns on the police and I was demonstrating, I would probably walk away.

NEW YORK (AP) — In law enforcement, they’re referred to as “nonlethal” tools for dealing with demonstrations that turn unruly: rubber bullets, pepper spray, batons, flash-bangs.

But the now-familiar scenes of U.S. police officers in riot gear clashing with protesters at Lafayette Park across from the White House and in other cities have police critics charging that the weaponry too often escalates tensions and hurts innocent people.

“When you see riot gear, it absolutely changes the mood,” said Ron Moten, a longtime community organizer in the nation’s capital who was out demonstrating this weekend. He said it takes away any perception the officers could be empathetic.

“If I went up to speak with a police officer and I’m covered in armor and holding a shield and a stick, don’t you think they would regard me as a threat?”
