WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jimmy Tosh, who runs a multi-million dollar hog and grain farm in Tennessee, is a lifelong Republican. He is pro-gun, supports lower taxes and agrees with most of Republican President Donald Trump’s agenda.
He is also spending his money to help defeat Trump in November’s election.
“I agree with 80% of the things he does; I just cannot stand a liar,” Tosh, 70, said of Trump.
Tosh is one of a growing number of wealthy conservative Americans who say Trump is a threat to democracy and the long-term health of the Republican Party. They are actively supporting his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 3 vote, former Vice President Joe Biden.
Several billionaire and millionaire donors to The Lincoln Project, the most prominent of Republican-backed groups opposing Trump’s re-election, told Reuters that elected Republicans should also be punished for enabling him. Some even support the ouster of vulnerable Republican senators to hand control of the chamber to Democrats.
Their money has fueled an unprecedented campaign from members of a sitting president’s own party to oust him from office. This is a sign that Trump has alienated some Republicans, most recently with his response to the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide protests over police brutality against Black Americans.
The ultimate impact of these actions remains to be seen in a country so deeply polarized..............................
“The distinction in 2020 that we didn’t see in 2016 is the amount of money backing their efforts and their size,” said Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist and a spokesperson for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Both teams left the court during the national anthem as a sign of peaceful protest and held a 26-second moment of silence for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old black woman who was killed at her home by Louisville police. Each player also had Taylor’s name on the back of their jerseys.
“We are dedicating this season to Breonna Taylor, an outstanding EMT who was murdered over 130 days ago in her home,” Liberty player Layshia Clarendon announced at mid-court, alongside Storm star Breanna Stewart, before the opening tip-off at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. “Breonna Taylor was dedicated and committed to uplifting everyone around here. We are also dedicating this season to ‘Say Her Name” campaign, a campaign committed to saying the names and fighting for justice of black women – black women are so often forgotten in this fight for justice, who don’t have people marching in the streets for them. We will say her name. Sandra Bland. Atatiana Jefferson. Dominique Remy Fells. Breonna Taylor. We will be a voice for the voiceless.”
The Liberty donated $25,000 to the African American Policy Forum and the #SayHerName campaign.

Right Wing Watch captured a clip from Rick Wiles on his Tru News show talking about protests in Portland. He calls on his viewers to reach out to Donald Trump and pass on the word that “he is now in possession of the [O]bama bullets, two billion [O]bama bullets.” He says, “You don’t have to tolerate this anymore. They were purchased for the purpose of putting down an insurrection. Well, you got one!”
The notion that the Federal government is hoarding ammunition for various nefarious reasons, including causing shortages so that the average consumer can’t access it, isn’t new. CBS reported in 2013 that the conspiracy theory was actually inspiring a legislative bill, which would have prevented government agencies from purchasing more ammunition in any month than that department purchased, on average, in a month between 2001 and 2009. Senator Jim Inhofe actually perpetuated the conspiracy theory, saying, “President Obama has been adamant about curbing law-abiding Americans’ access and opportunities to exercise their Second Amendment rights. One way the Obama Administration is able to do this is by limiting what’s available in the market with federal agencies purchasing unnecessary stockpiles of ammunition.”

Law Enforcement Officials Condemn Trump's Border Agents in Portland: 'It's the Ultimate Powder Keg'

Current and former federal law enforcement officials are condemning the Trump administration's use of elite paramilitary border guard units to deter protesters in Portland, a move they said skirts protocol, threatens national security and further escalates violence.
Three current officials from the Department of Home Security and various levels of law enforcement who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the matter and one former federal law enforcement official said they were angered by the move and told Newsweek that the DHS exploited a loophole to deploy combat-ready forces such as Customs and Border Protection's Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) and Special Response Team (SRT) to Oregon's largest city, where protests have raged for nearly eight weeks since George Floyd's death in police custody in Minneapolis.

To send troops to Portland, Trump would have to invoke the Insurrection Act, the way former President George H.W. Bush did in 1992 during the Los Angeles riots after the police officers accused of beating Rodney King were acquitted. That move, however, would likely be politically unpopular. Trump instead chose to use federal agents, who have jurisdiction across the country and can be deployed accordingly.
Clad in camouflage and equipped with high-tech gear, however, BORTAC and SRT can look like military personnel, and one DHS official told Newsweek that gives the appearance that Trump is using them in a similar capacity.
"So this is an end-run because he couldn't use the military because this isn't an insurrection—he's using forces not meant to deal with protests in a U.S. city," the official told Newsweek under the condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak to the media.

DHS Secretary Chad Wolf also defended the techniques of BORTAC and SRT, declaring at a Washington press conference Tuesday "we will not retreat" from crowds accused of arson, destruction and assaulting officers in Portland. He was joined by Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan and Federal Protective Service Deputy Director of Operations Richard Cline in extolling the efforts of federal law enforcement agents, whom all three said were well-qualified for their duties in Portland.

Portland protests continue for 58th day

The Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse has been the site of repeated overnight confrontations between federal officers embedded inside and demonstrators gathered outside. Many people pushed the fence and some protesters threw objects over it, and at one point early Saturday, a successive series of fireworks sent from the crowd exploded past the courthouse fence.
The tactics federal officers have used to defend government buildings — and the repeated praise of those actions from President Donald Trump — have brought national attention to Portland. The heightened federal response arrived weeks after nightly protests against police violence and systemic racism.
The looming predictability of tear gas deployed by federal officers has prompted protesters to prepare more each night, in part by bringing leaf blowers to deflect the gas toward officers and stop it from spreading.

At least 4,000 people poured Friday night into the city’s core. It was the largest crowd since early weeks of the protests that started 58 days ago. ..............................................

President’s Donald Trump’s Ambassador to the United Kingdon has worried diplomats for a pattern of “poor judgment” according to a bombshell report by The New York Times.
“Playing host at a small dinner on Tuesday night in honor of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the American ambassador to Britain, Robert Wood Johnson IV, told his guests that the wine was from President Trump’s vineyard in Virginia. He was serving it, he joked, even though it might be ethically improper,” the newspaper reported. “The next day, Mr. Johnson was not making any more jokes about ethics. On Twitter, he insisted he had “followed the ethical rules and requirements of my office at all times” after The New York Times reported that at the president’s request, he had raised with a British official the idea of steering the British Open golf tournament to Mr. Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland.”
“In the ranks of the American diplomatic corps, Mr. Johnson’s enthusiasm for pleasing Mr. Trump has raised questions about whether Mr. Johnson — a 73-year-old pharmaceutical heir, N.F.L. team owner and longtime friend of the president’s — has put promoting his boss over his diplomatic duties,” The Times reported. “It has also deepened the misgivings of the London embassy’s staff about his judgment, given his reputation for off-color jokes and remarks to subordinates that some said have crossed the line into sexism or racism. Arizona Democratic Party headquarters fire believed to be arson

The building near Central Avenue and Thomas Road caught on fire early Friday. No one was injured.

PHOENIX — Fire investigators now believe a Friday morning fire at the Arizona Democratic Party headquarters in Phoenix was arson.
The Phoenix Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the building near Central Avenue and Thomas Road around 1 a.m. for reports of smoke coming from the building.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but the Maricopa County Democratic Party's side was completely lost.
Investigators say based on the evidence at the scene, this is now an arson investigation.

With a number of planned weekend events in Seattle, Mayor Jenny Durkan, Police Chief Carmen Best, and Fire Chief Harold Scoggins held a briefing Friday morning.
Durkan said the destruction and violence seen in Seattle on Sunday and Wednesday should not continue. She does recognize these actions are coming from a small group of individuals, and that most people have been peacefully protesting.
