Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley Sought Extra Security After Trump Called Her 'Dishonest'

Source: huff post

08/19/2019 02:52 am ET Updated 1 hour ago

Whaley said she was just doing her job when the president insulted her.

The mayor of Dayton, Ohio, needed extra security after President Donald Trump publicly insulted her, The Dayton Daily News reported.

Mayor Nan Whaley, grappling with the aftermath of a mass shooting this month in which nine people were killed, received a torrent of threats and abusive comments after the president traveled to the city to visit with victims and meet with local leaders.

In a press conference following Trump’s visit, Whaley and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) discussed the need for more gun control. Brown also called Trump’s visit “comforting,” and Whaley said that first responders and victims were “grateful the president of the United States came to Dayton.”

Trump, however, lashed Whaley and Brown, calling them “very dishonest people” for “misrepresenting” his visit. He also tweeted that their press conference was a “fraud.” Some speculated that Trump may have been parroting a perspective he heard on Fox News. .............................

I'm the volunteer in the red shirt. He wasn't trolling us - he comes and talks with our booth every year. We primarily discussed civil discourse and touched on a few issues where we could try to find common ground. He got the blazer at another booth just before.

U.S. trade war with China is torpedoing consumer confidence

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/consumer-confidence-index-august-2019-consumer-confidence-drops-to-lowest-point-since-january/

By Aimee Picchi August 16, 2019 / 2:48 PM / MoneyWatch

A closely watched index of consumer confidence dropped last month to its lowest level since January, with a third of respondents citing the latest proposed round of U.S. tariffs on China as a concern.
Consumer spending accounts for roughly 70% of economic activity in the U.S., so confidence indexes are watched closely by investors to assess whether shoppers might pull back.
The Fed's decision last month to cut interest rates for the first time since 2008 also sent a signal to consumers that they might need to pull back on spending because of a possible recession.

Americans have proved hardy despite deteriorating trade relations between the U.S. and China, continuing to spend freely even as the prospects for a deal fade. But a key gauge of how consumers are feeling suggest they're finally starting to get nervous.

Consumer confidence last month dipped to its lowest level since January, according to the University of Michigan's sentiment index, which investors watch closely as a signal of where the economy is headed. The reason: Respondents to the survey fear that U.S. tariffs set to take effect later this year could mean higher costs on a range of products, and perhaps push the economy toward a recession. ...........................................

While Trump’s violent rhetoric incites attacks against Jews, people of color and immigrants, the right weaponizes antisemitism against progressive women of color to divide our movements and distract from the GOP’s own violent antisemitism. But Jews will not be used.

Climate scientists drive stake through heart of skeptics' argument

Climate scientists drive stake through heart of skeptics' argument
New research shows that the recent rise in global temperatures is unlike anything seen on Earth during the past 2,000 years.

By Jaclyn Jeffrey-Wilensky

Global warming skeptics sometimes say rising temperatures are just another naturally occurring shift in Earth’s climate, like the Medieval Warm Period of the years 800 to 1200 or the Little Ice Age, a period of cooling that spanned from roughly 1300 to 1850.

But a pair of studies published Wednesday provides stark evidence that the rise in global temperatures over the past 150 years has been far more rapid and widespread than any warming period in the past 2,000 years — a finding that undercuts claims that today’s global warming isn’t necessarily the result of human activity.

“The familiar maxim that the climate is always changing is certainly true,” Scott St. George, a physical geographer at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, said in a written commentary about the studies. “But even when we push our perspective to the earliest days of the Roman Empire, we cannot discern any event that is remotely equivalent — either in degree or extent — to the warming over the last few decades.”

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the global average temperature on Earth has risen by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. A consensus of climate scientists pins the increase primarily on the burning of fossil fuels, which spews carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the air. In the absence of concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the United Nations says, the global average temperature could rise an additional 5.4 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100...........................................
