Herschel Walker: 'Don't We Have Enough Trees Around Here?'

Source: huff post

“You know that some of this money is going into trees?” the Republican Senate candidate said at an event Sunday in response to the new climate law.

Liz Skalka Aug 22, 2022, 04:29 PM EDT

Georgia Republican Herschel Walker said the Biden administration’s sweeping new climate law represents unnecessary spending because it sets aside money to plant and protect trees.

“They try to fool you and make you think they are helping you out — they’re not. You know that some of this money is going into trees? We got enough trees — don’t we have enough trees around here?” Walker said Sunday in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Essentially, no — the planet does not have enough trees to neutralize the impact of burning fossil fuels.

While a 2015 study found the earth has over 3 trillion trees, the number of trees here now is far less than at the beginning of human civilization — and not nearly enough to offset the devastating effects of climate change, scientists say.

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed by Congress without a single Republican vote, allocates $1.5 billion over a decade to the Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, which funds tree-planting in cities like Atlanta that struggle with poor air quality. Especially in lower-income areas, scientists agree that trees are beneficial, helping to reduce air pollution and temperatures.

'I don't say his name, ever': Vulnerable Republicans seek to avoid Trump in 2022 midterms

(CNN)The man in charge of the House GOP's campaign strategy has been doling out advice to Republican candidates and incumbents in key battleground races as they prepare for the general election: Don't be distracted by Donald Trump on the campaign trail, and instead focus on the issues Republicans believe will be most salient to voters in the midterms.

The guidance from Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, relayed by three GOP sources familiar with the internal conversations, reflects a tacit acknowledgment among Republican leaders that the former president could knock the GOP's midterm messaging off course as they seek to recapture the House majority this fall. It also represents a shift from the strategy deployed in many Republican primaries, where embracing Trump -- or at least not alienating him and his base -- was seen as essential to survival.

The dynamic that House Republicans are now grappling with underscores the continued challenge Trump's influence over the GOP poses for the party -- a challenge that will only intensify if the former President decides once again to run for the White House in 2024.

"Tom Emmer, and I think Kevin (McCarthy) and Steve (Scalise), are all saying we should be focusing on the issues -- and they're right," said Rep. Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican who represents a Biden-won district and faces a competitive re-election race this fall. "Our focus should be on 2022. If it's 2024, it hurts us. .. We need to be focused on winning this November, and I think anything that takes your eyes off that, it could cost us a couple of victories.".....................

Overlapping emergencies strain the nation's public health workforce and threaten critical vaccination campaigns

By Brenda Goodman, CNN Health Updated 2:13 PM ET, Mon August 22, 2022

(CNN)This fall, the health of the nation will depend in large part on vaccines.

Health officials are banking on vaccinations to contain monkeypox and polio before those become standing threats in the United States. They're counting on updated boosters to restore waning immunity against Covid-19. With influenza expected back in the US this fall, flu shots could be critical to prevent severe illness and keep hospitals from becoming overwhelmed.

While the federal government will facilitate getting these inoculations to states, it will be the 2,820 state and local health departments that will spearhead the work of getting shots into arms, and public health experts say it's not clear that these offices have enough funding or staff to get the job done.

................"I think right now we have a perfect storm in the vaccine world happening in this country," said Michael Osterholm, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

He points out that even though average daily Covid-19 deaths are much lower than they were in 2020 and 2021, the US is still averaging more than 400 a day, making it the nation's fourth leading cause of death. Most of those deaths are in unvaccinated people, according to the CDC.

Overall, more than 1 in 5 Americans are still unvaccinated against Covid-19, and that number doesn't seem likely to budge. Vaccination rates are mostly stagnant. .........................

Those who are un-vaccinated at this point will never get vaccinated and will continue to put us all at risk.

Doug Mastriano's comments on Islam and climate change resurface, the latest hit for his campaign

Source: stripes.com

By William Bender The Philadelphia Inquirer • August 19, 2022

PHILADELPHIA (Tribune News Service) — Doug Mastriano is trying to appeal to a wider audience. He wants to steer the conversation toward inflation, taxes, parental rights, energy independence, and crime.

But with less than three months remaining before Election Day, Mastriano continues to be haunted by … Doug Mastriano.

Whether it’s a thesis he wrote 20 years ago warning of a left-wing “Hitlerian Putsch,” or a since-deleted Facebook video he posted this spring about the state’s “deceitful” GOP establishment and its secret “disdain for veterans,” the Republican nominee for governor can’t seem to get out of his own way.

The post-primary hits keep on coming. This week? A 2018 radio interview resurfaced in which Mastriano claims that climate change is an academic fabrication and that Islam isn’t compatible with the U.S. Constitution.

“The Constitution was founded on Christian-Judeo ideas, and it’s only compatible with that worldview,” Mastriano, who was running for Congress at the time, said on WEEO News Talk 103.7 FM. “Guess what? Not all religions are created equal, and they all have different worldviews.”

When asked in the radio interview if global warming is real, Mastriano responded: “It is not. It’s fake science, and it’s a racket at the academic level.”

It is a fairly long article if you want to learn more of him.
DeSantis went to PA for his rally today.

In Ron Desantis’s one-hour speech in Pittsburgh today at the Doug Mastriano rally, he mentioned:

- Doug Mastriano - hardly ever
- Mehmet Oz - once
- 7-8 former presidents by name

- DONALD TRUMP - NOT ONCE

Happy Tuesday, Wisconsin!

................
.............

President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act on Tuesday afternoon—a generational investment that a wide array of experts agree will lower healthcare and prescription drug costs, tackle climate change, and reduce inflation for Wisconsin families. The new law:

helps an estimated 43,000 Wisconsinites keep their health insurance by extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies through 2025 and keeps the cost of premiums low for another 150,000 Wisconsin residents who get coverage through the ACA.

saves Wisconsin seniors money on prescription drugs, caps their out-of-pocket expenses on prescription drugs to $2,000 per year, and implements a $35 monthly cap on insulin for Medicare recipients.

incentivizes industry to transition to renewable energies and provides direct rebates to Wisconsinites who adopt clean-energy stoves, heaters, dryers, and other appliances.

creates up to 9 million jobs across the country, makes the US less reliant on foreign oil, and dramatically reduces emissions that have caused an increase in extreme weather events.

The bill also invests tens of billions of dollars in rural America while only raising taxes on large corporations.

Every Democrat in the US House and Senate voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, while every Republican politician—including Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson—voted against it.

In rare move, school librarian fights back in court against conservative activists

A Louisiana school librarian is suing two men for defamation after they accused her of advocating to keep "pornographic" materials in the parish library's kids' section. It's a rare example of an educator taking legal action against conservatives who use extreme rhetoric in their battle against LGBTQ-themed books.

Amanda Jones, a librarian at a middle school in Denham Springs, Louisiana, filed a defamation lawsuit Wednesday, arguing that Facebook pages run by Michael Lunsford and Ryan Thames falsely labeled her a pedophile who wants to teach 11-year-olds about anal sex.

Jones, the president of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians, was alarmed and outraged by the verbal attacks, which came after she spoke against censorship at a Livingston Parish Library Board of Control meeting. She said she’s suing the two men because she’s exhausted with the insults hurled at educators and librarians over LGBTQ materials.

“I’ve had enough for everybody,” Jones said in an interview. “Nobody stands up to these people. They just say what they want and there are no repercussions and they ruin people’s reputations and there’s no consequences.”
