Ohio Republicans Advance Nationwide Wage-Suppression Campaign

State lawmakers move to prevent municipalities from boosting pay for low-wage workersa growing obstacle in the Fight for $15.
By Justin Miller / The American Prospect
December 14, 2016
...................................................But there was another harsh measure in the mix that flew under the radar: a measure that would force Ohio localities to comply with state minimum-wage regulations that top out at $8.10 an hour.
The legislation aims to block Cleveland, one of Ohios largest and poorest cities, from unilaterally boosting wages for its low-wage workers. According to U.S. census data, 35,000 Clevelanders work full-time for less than $15 an hour, and 50 percent of those workers are black.
After the Cleveland City Council rejected a both a Fight for 15 campaign lobbying effort to pass a $15 minimum wage in August and an attempt to get the issue on the November ballot, labor advocates succeeded in securing a special election for May2017. Voters will decide whether to establish a $12 minimum wage beginning in 2018, with annual one-dollar increases up to $15 over three years and cost-of-living-indexed increases thereafter.
Its corporate interests like the fast-food lobby fighting to keep pay low," says Paul Sonn, the National Employment Law Projects general counsel. When cities take matters into their own hands, they push conservative legislators to block that, too.
.................
The Cleveland ballot measure, and future attempts to raise minimum wages in Cincinnati, Columbus, or Dayton, would be stopped in their tracks if Kasich signs the legislation. Whether he will remains unclear, but a decision could come as early as Friday. ................
. .............
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker launched the first major Republican preemption effort in 2011 when he signed legislation that prevented localities from requiring mandatory paid sick time. .............

WASHINGTON When Special Agent Adrian Hawkins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation called the Democratic National Committee in September 2015 to pass along some troubling news about its computer network, he was transferred, naturally, to the help desk.
His message was brief, if alarming. At least one computer system belonging to the D.N.C. had been compromised by hackers federal investigators had named the Dukes, a cyberespionage team linked to the Russian government.
The F.B.I. knew it well: ...............................
Yared Tamene, the tech-support contractor at the D.N.C. who fielded the call, was no expert in cyberattacks. His first moves were to check Google for the Dukes and conduct a cursory search of the D.N.C. computer system logs to look for hints of such a cyberintrusion. By his own account, he did not look too hard even after Special Agent Hawkins called back repeatedly over the next several weeks in part because he wasnt certain the caller was a real F.B.I. agent and not an impostor.
I had no way of differentiating the call I....................................
It was the cryptic first sign of a cyberespionage and information-warfare campaign devised to disrupt the 2016 presidential election, the first such attempt by a foreign power in American history. What started as an information-gathering operation, intelligence officials believe, ultimately morphed into an effort to harm one candidate, Hillary Clinton, and tip the election to her opponent, Donald J. Trump..................................

More than 33,000 people died of opioid overdoses in the United States last year. But speaking of an opiate epidemic is in some ways a misnomer. The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the country is in fact dealing with multiple opioid epidemics right now each with a distinct geographic footprint.
The geography of opioid deaths
Starting with the big picture, here's a map of total opioid death rates by state. County-level data would be preferable, but the CDC suppresses data for many small counties to protect the privacy of the people who live there. The data in this map encompasses everything from heroin to hydrocodone to more powerful synthetic drugs like fentanyl.................

Poll: Majority Oppose Trump/Ryan Plan To Privatize Medicare
December 13, 2016 Oliver Willis Politics 0
Paul Ryan
A majority of the people responding to a new poll say they oppose the Donald Trump/Paul Ryan plan to privatize the Medicare system.
According to Morning Consult, 55 percent of voters say that Medicare should continue on its current successful path, while only 29 percent support transforming it into a private system. Ryan and other Republicans have used the euphemism premium support to describe the process of turning over the Medicare system to private, for-profit companies that would prioritize their own profits over patient health and safety.
Morning Consult notes that the option to transform Medicare has remained at the same level of unpopularity, with a November 2014 Kaiser Family Foundaiton report showing only 26 percent supporting privatization.......................

.........................Democrats seized on potential Medicare changes as a regular attack point in the weeks following the election. While President-elect Donald Trump sought to differentiate himself from other Republicans throughout the campaign by saying he would not touch Medicare or Social Security, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Rep. Tom Price (Ga.), Trumps pick for Health and Human Services secretary, have supported moving the program to a premium support system.
The older the voter, the more likely they are to want to maintain Medicare as it is now. Among those surveyed, only 18- to 29-year-olds had more favor reform (41 percent) than those who favored keeping the system as is (39 percent). Among seniors age 65 and older, 67 percent said they thought the system should remain as is, while 19 percent favored the premium support model.
Of the entire survey group, 15 percent said they strongly supported a shift to the government helping seniors purchase a private insurance policy and another 22 percent said they somewhat supported it. Another 14 percent said they somewhat oppose a shift, while 30 percent said they strongly opposed changes. Twenty percent said they didnt know or had no opinion.
The poll also indicates more people think the proposed changes would do more harm than good. Forty-eight percent of respondents said the proposal was a bad idea, while 34 percent called it a good idea. Nineteen percent said they didnt know or had no opinion........................

Alex Jones Scrubs Pizzagate Content; Complaint Reveals New Tie Connecting Shooter To Jones
Source: mediamatters.org
2 hours 10 sec ago ERIC HANANOKI
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is scrubbing online content pushing the false and dangerous conspiracy theory that Hillary Clintons campaign trafficked children through a D.C. pizzeria. A man who recently entered the pizzeria with a rifle and fired shots reportedly shared a piece of Jones content before the shooting; the video he shared is still on the website.
Jones is a radio host who has claimed that the government perpetrated the 9/11 attacks and the tragedies at Columbine, Oklahoma City, Sandy Hook, and the Boston Marathon. Jones has also repeatedly accused the Clintons of murder. He has been elevated from the fringes to the mainstream by President-elect Donald Trump, who appeared on his show and praised his amazing reputation. Trump adviser Roger Stone is also a regular Jones guest and contributor.
Jones and his Infowars website have promoted the false conspiracy theory dubbed "pizzagate," which alleges that top Clinton associates such as campaign manager John Podesta are trafficking children through the Comet Ping Pong restaurant.
The false claims took a dangerous turn when Edgar Maddison Welch fired an assault rifle inside the pizzeria because he was trying to self-investigate the conspiracy theory. FBI special agent Justin Holgate stated in a criminal complaint that Welch said he sent a video on the night of December 1 with the message Watch PIZZAGATE: The Bigger Picture on YouTube to a friend before the shooting:
