NBC News under fire for misleading tweets about Trump chief of staff's answer on Muslim registry

Source: businessinsider

NBC News came under fire Sunday morning for a pair of tweets that removed context from an answer Reince Priebus, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for White House chief of staff, offered on the idea of a Muslim registry.

Priebus appeared “Meet the Press” and was asked by host Chuck Todd if he could rule out the idea of placing Muslims on a registry.

Here was the exchange:

TODD: Can you equivocally rule out a registry for Muslims?

PRIEBUS: Look, I’m not going to rule out anything. But, we are not going to have a registry based on religion.

The public relations account for NBC News tweeted out the exchange twice, but left out the second part of Priebus’ response: ...............

This judge way over-stepped his boundaries. He is essentially telling these new citizens that their first amendment rights are null and void. He is threatening them IMHO!

A federal judge presiding over a naturalization ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday told new U.S. citizens if they didn’t like President-elect Donald Trump, they could leave the United States.

“I can assure you that whether you voted for him or you did not vote for him, if you are a citizen of the United States, he is your president,”
Judge John Primomo said, according to KENS 5. “He will be your president and if you do not like that, you need to go to another country.”

From the start of his presidential campaign, Trump made attacking immigrants a central component of his candidacy. He called Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals and pledged to ban all Muslim immigrants from entering the U.S. On Friday, he announced he would nominate Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), a staunch anti-immigration hardliner, as his attorney general.

Primomo told KENS 5 that his comments were intended to be unifying and that he meant them to be respectful to the office of the president. He also criticized demonstrators who have been protesting Trump since he was elected on Nov. 8. Since the election, there has also been an uptick in attacks on minority groups in the United States, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. .......................

Source: abc

Nov 20, 2016, 5:09 AM ET

It's been nearly two weeks since the November 8 general election, but the results have not remained static as ballots continue to be counted.

While the number of votes for both president-elect Donald Trump and his former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton continue to increase, the gap is widening, with Clinton expanding her popular vote lead over Trump.

According to new figures released by The Associated Press on Saturday, Clinton received more than 1.5 million votes than her Republican rival.

As of Saturday, Clinton had received 63,390,669 votes, while Trump received 61,820,845 votes -- a difference of 1,569,824, according to The AP.

Rounded off to whole numbers, that translates to 48 percent vs. 47 percent.

I do not know Hillary's plans for her future but I strongly suspect she will engage in some causes near and dear to her.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The father of a soldier who was killed last weekend in Afghanistan was disappointed and hurt after airline passengers booed him and his family as they flew to meet his son's remains.

Stewart Perry, an ex-Marine who lives in Stockton, said the ordeal left him feeling disrespected.

"It was really disgusting on the passengers' part," he said Friday.

His son, Sgt. John Perry, was one of two killed in an explosion at a United States airbase on Nov. 12. He was honored at a memorial service in Lodi on Thursday and will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

John Perry, 30, and Pfc. Tyler R. Iubelt of Tamaroa, Illinois, died from their injuries after the attack by an apparent suicide bomber at the Bagram Airfield at about 5:30 a.m. local time.

Stewart Perry said he, his wife, Kathy, and daughter were flying on an American Airlines flight from Sacramento on Monday to Philadelphia, with a quick transfer in Phoenix. From Philadelphia, they traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to receive his son's remains.

For unknown reasons, Perry said, the flight to Phoenix was 45 minutes late. The crew feared the delay might cause the Perrys miss their connecting flight.

So, when the plane landed in Phoenix, the captain made an announcement for all passengers to remain seated and to let a "special military family" exit the aircraft first, Perry said.

Several passengers in first class began to boo and complain, Perry said........................

Protesters in Washington D.C. clash with white nationalists at conference celebrating 'year of Don

A white nationalist conference held at a federal building in Washington, D.C., in celebration of "the year of Donald Trump" ignited violent clashes between protesters and attendees of the hate group gathering.

Scores of demonstrators swarmed the downtown D.C. conference venue, the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, on Saturday afternoon shouting, “Fascists, we will shut you down!”

Images and videos of the protest show that at least one person was injured — a man reported to be a white nationalist who suffered a bloody gash across his forehead after getting pummeled by a group of protesters. A man can be heard screaming "F--k Nazis!" in a video of the attack.

Washington D.C. police reported no arrests as of Saturday afternoon. ............................

A white nationalist organization that has come under fire for promoting racism will host a conference Saturday at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in downtown Washington — a gathering of more than 250 that will celebrate Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

“The past 12 months might be remembered as the year of Donald Trump .?.?. and the year of the Alt Right,” according to the website for the National Policy Institute, which is hosting the event. “It was a time when more people joined our movement then [sic] ever before and when our ideas began invading the mainstream.”

The conference is expected to draw dozens if not hundreds of protesters, who have launched a Facebook page asking that people join them “to defeat this hate.”

A Trump-supporting Republican lawmaker is trying to legally define protests, like some of those erupting across the country against his candidate of choice, labeled a form of “terrorism.” In a statement issued Wednesday, Washington state Senator Doug Ericksen says he is drafting a bill that would allow for felony prosecution of protesters who “intentionally break the law...by obstructing economic activity.” Considering that almost all protest could be defined as getting in the way of business interests, Ericksen’s bill is an obvious attack on citizens’ First Amendment rights.

In an unvarnished look at the trickery we may see plenty of in Trump’s America, Ericksen says he will propose creating “a new crime of economic terrorism” which could be used against those whose protest activities “block transportation and commerce, cause property damage, threaten jobs and put public safety at risk.” Ericksen, who was Trump’s deputy campaign director in Washington state, said in the statement that he’s actually all for civil disobedience, even though he wants to make many kinds of protest—that is, constitutionally protected freedom of speech and assembly—felony offenses.

“I respect the right to protest, but when it endangers people’s lives and property, it goes too far,” Ericksen said. “Fear, intimidation and vandalism are not a legitimate form of political expression. Those who employ it must be called to account.”

Ericksen also threatened those who support protesters in their right to protest
, stating, “We are not just going after the people who commit these acts of terrorism. We are going after the people who fund them. Wealthy donors should not feel safe in disrupting middle-class jobs.”..............................

Trumps big infrastructure plan? Its a Trump con trap: goes to investors, few jobs...

I think this is well worth your time to read--and pass around

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-big-infrastructure-plan-its-a-trap/2016/11/18/5b1d109c-adae-11e6-8b45-f8e493f06fcd_story.html?utm_term=.b61dc62a8230

Opinions
Trump’s big infrastructure plan? It’s a trap.

Ronald A. Klain served as assistant to President Obama and oversaw the team implementing the American Recovery and Renewal Act from 2009-2011. He was an adviser to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign. The views expressed here are solely his own.

As the White House official responsible for overseeing implementation of President Obama’s massive infrastructure initiative, the 2009 Recovery Act, I’ve got a simple message for Democrats who are embracing President-elect Donald Trump’s infrastructure plan: Don’t do it. It’s a trap. Backing Trump’s plan is a mistake in policy and political judgment they will regret, as did their Democratic predecessors who voted for Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts in 1981 and George W. Bush’s cuts in 2001.

First, Trump’s plan is not really an infrastructure plan. It’s a tax-cut plan for utility-industry and construction-sector investors, and a massive corporate welfare plan for contractors. The Trump plan doesn’t directly fund new roads, bridges, water systems or airports, as did Hillary Clinton’s 2016 infrastructure proposal. Instead, Trump’s plan provides tax breaks to private-sector investors who back profitable construction projects. These projects (such as electrical grid modernization or energy pipeline expansion) might already be planned or even underway. There’s no requirement that the tax breaks be used for incremental or otherwise expanded construction efforts; they could all go just to fatten the pockets of investors in previously planned projects.

Moreover, as others have noted, desperately needed infrastructure projects that are not attractive to private investors — municipal water-system overhauls, repairs of existing roads, replacement of bridges that do not charge tolls — get no help from Trump’s plan. And contractors? Well, they get a “10 percent pretax profit margin,” according to the plan. Combined with Trump’s sweeping business tax break, this would represent a stunning $85 billion after-tax profit for contractors — underwritten by the taxpayers.

Second, as a result of the above, Trump’s plan isn’t really a jobs plan, either. Because the plan subsidizes investors, not projects; because it funds tax breaks, not bridges; because there’s no requirement that the projects be otherwise unfunded, there is simply no guarantee that the plan will produce any net new hiring. Investors may simply shift capital from unsubsidized projects to subsidized ones and pocket the tax breaks on projects they would have funded anyway. Contractors have no obligation to hire new workers, or expand workers’ hours, to collect their $85 billion. To their credit, the plan’s authors don’t call it a jobs plan; ironically, it is Democrats looking to align with Trump who have given it that name. They should not fool themselves.

Third, because there is no proposed funding mechanism for Trump’s tax breaks, they will add to the deficit — perhaps as much as $137 billion. ...........................

Fourth, if the Republican approach to the Recovery Act is any indication, the Trump plan will come chock-full of policy changes that undermine core Democratic principles. Buried inside the plan will be provisions to weaken prevailing wage protections on construction projects, undermining unions and ultimately eroding workers’ earnings. Environmental rules are almost certain to be gutted in the name of accelerating projects.

I understand why Democrats are searching for areas where they can make progress under a ..............................

After the disappointing election results, Democrats are looking for ways to connect with working-class voters — and Trump’s plan appears to offer that. But when the plan is passed and those voters see that it fattens investors’ and contractors’ pockets (but not workers’), creates few jobs, depresses wages and damages our environment, they will sour on it and turn against its backers. Democrats may lack the votes to stop Trump’s plan, particularly if the GOP uses extraordinary legislative vehicles or processes to pass it. But Democrats should not add their votes and credibility to this poorly designed initiative.

Tensions from last week’s election seeped into a girls volleyball match, when students from Archer City chanted “Build a wall!” and “Come and take it!” when playing Fort Hancock, a school on the Texas-Mexico border that is 97 percent Hispanic.
.........................

“Build a wall” refers to President-elect Donald Trump’s comments made during the campaign that he wants to build a wall on the Mexico border and “Come and take it” is a reference to the Battle of Gonzales, the first military engagement in the Texas Revolution against Mexico................

Archer City, which last year had an enrollment of 384, is 83 percent white and 9 percent Hispanic, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Fort Hancock, population 1,750, is in Hudspeth County on the Texas-Mexico border 72 miles southeast of El Paso. The school district had an enrollment of 434 and is 97 percent Hispanic, according to the TEA.
