Koch brothers’ lobbyist linked to green energy foe

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A lobbyist says he did a personal favor to aid the formation of a new group opposing a Kansas green-energy requirement for utilities, fueling criticism that a recent postcard campaign against the rule on behalf of seniors was actually orchestrated by the conservative billionaire Koch brothers’ main political organization and the powerful Kansas Chamber of Commerce.

State Director Jeff Glendening said Wednesday that Americans for Prosperity, the anti-tax, small-government group backed by Charles and David Koch, had nothing to do with postcards sent out opposing the standards. But on Thursday, Glendening told The Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/1l77FGR ) he forgot to mention that he helped link attorney W. Robert Alderson with Virginia Crossland-Macha, the founder of the Kansas Senior Consumer Alliance which sent the postcards.

Glendening said he was not acting in his official capacity as AFP’s state leader.

“There’s no formal connection between AFP and this group. There really isn’t, other than yes, we agreed on the RPS (energy standards) issue. I don’t know what other issues they’re going to take up,” Glendening said. “I’ve known Virginia for years and she simply asked about forming a group and I connected the two and that was it.”

Obama calls climate change ‘fact’, announces new energy intiatives

Climate change is a “fact” and requires immediate action, President Obama said Friday at a Walmart store in California, where he announced a series of sustainable energy initiatives.

“Two years ago I ordered $2 billion in energy upgrades to federal buildings. Today I’m ordering an additional $2 billion in upgrades over the next three years. And these upgrades will create tens of thousands of construction jobs and save taxpayers billions of dollars,” Obama said.

Obama also announced that more than 300 organizations have agreed to expand solar energy, moves that he said will be good for the economy in the long run.

The president also proved he’s personally committed to sustainable energy. The White House announced on Friday that the first family’s residence has been equipped with American-made solar panels – part of an energy retrofit aimed at improving the building’s overall energy efficiency.

Other measures to reduce the first family’s carbon footprint include the installation of variable-speed fans and updated building controls at their home.

Ex-Treasury Sec. Geithner expresses regret over 2008 finance crisis in new memoir

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he regrets not pushing for stronger financial safeguards ahead of the devastating 2008 crisis, according to reported excerpts of his new book.

“Before the crisis, I didn’t push for the Fed in Washington to strengthen the safeguards for banks, nor did I push for legislation in Congress to extend the safeguards to nonbanks,” he writes in Stress Test: Reflections on Financial Crises.

Excerpts published online in the New York Times Magazine reveal his behind-the-scenes view of the Wall Street meltdown that rocked the global economy. The book will be published Sunday.

Geithner, 52, said that he disagreed with Larry Summers, President Barack Obama’s chief economic adviser, and other members of the administration who were pushing Obama for the nationalization of some embattled banks like Citigroup.

Why Do Schizophrenics Hear Voices?

In a way, you're never alone. Your inner consciousness is always there to keep you company. That voice inside your head is reliably available for conversation. These intensely personal and comforting self-to-self dialogues are splayed across the humdrum of a typical day. "I think I'll wear the blue polo to my date tonight." "Enchiladas: that's what I want for lunch." "Oh my gosh, cute kittens!"

But what if there was a foreign voice inside your head? An entity over which you could exact no control. Wouldn't that be the worst invasion of privacy imaginable? Wouldn't that be disturbing?

For the majority of schizophrenics, this dreadful plight is a vexing regularity. Fortunately, schizophrenia is rare, but that's no consolation to the 24 million people afflicted with the condition. Moreover, there is limited understanding of its underlying causes, and treatments -- often in the form of antipsychotics -- are far from perfect, presenting their own loaded plate of perturbing side effects.

This is where Baylor neuroscientist David Eagleman enters into the discussion. Widely regarded for his work on the brain's perception of time, synesthesia, and neurolaw, Eagleman is now foraying into the study of schizophrenia. It wasn't something he originally planned on.

Back to the streets ...

Medical pot returning to underground

A stocky onetime mortgage broker is speeding through Costa Mesa in an old pickup with two pounds of weed in a paper bag. He wears gray cargo shorts and flip-flops and a faded cap with the image of a marijuana leaf stitched on the front. He just smoked a joint thick as a knuckle.

Cypress Hill thumps through the cab.

I'll hit that bong and break ya off somethin' soon

I got ta get my props,

Cops, come and try to snatch my crops

These pigs wanna blow my house down

For a man whose apartment was raided recently and now faces felony drug possession and cultivation charges, he doesn't seem particularly worried about the mission at hand. Ricky rants about a federal and local crackdown on medical marijuana that closed various dispensaries that he ran and forced him back to the streets, where he began as a teenager in the 1970s. (Except then, he was a dealer. Now he is a "mobile dispensary.&quot

"It's too late!" he bellows. "The genie is out of the bottle. A huge demand has been created. It's back to the underground. Anyone who is smart is just going to take it back to the streets."

Poll Reveals You Live In Country Where Mentally Ill Man Still Has Good Chance Of Being Senator

WASHINGTON—A new poll of the Missouri electorate reported this week that Sen. Claire McCaskill holds a tenuous lead in the state’s Senate race over Rep. Todd Akin, essentially revealing that you live in a nation where a man who is deeply and irrefutably mentally ill can nevertheless stand a solid chance of winning higher office. “Current data shows that, contrary to any conventional notions of human reason or logic, a man with a questionable grasp on reality is evidently quite able to attain a prominent government position in the nation you are a citizen of,” said researcher Donald Schur, noting that the man in question currently holds a one-percent lead, “yes, lead,” in several other similar election polls. “That’s right, you, the average citizen, live in a country where a human being deep in the throes of delusion can not only be elected to higher office on six prior occasions, but may in fact be voted into office again despite his psychological instability being put on full display in the most spectacular fashion imaginable. This is the place where you live, and work, and pay taxes.” Researchers also noted that, according to recent evidence, this kind of thing actually doesn’t surprise you too much anymore.

PROSECUTION: HOLMES MADE THREATS BEFORE RAMPAGE

Source: AP

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) -- Prosecutors say the suspect in the Colorado theater shooting made threats and was banned from the University of Colorado after failing a key exam six weeks before the rampage.

They made the accusations about James Holmes in court Thursday as they tried to convince a judge to let them see records from the university, where Holmes had been a graduate student.

They also claim professors had urged Holmes to get into another line of work before the shooting. Attorney Karen Pearson didn't disclose where their information came from, and prosecutors did not give further details on the nature of the threats.

Defense lawyer Daniel King objected to the release of the records, calling the prosecution's request a "fishing expedition."
