04:30 PM: North Carolina governor vetoes bills to reopen gyms, fitness centers
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) on Thursday vetoed three bills that would have reopened gyms, fitness centers and amusement parks more quickly than he had planned.
The legislature was also aiming to reopen skating rinks, bowling alleys and other entertainment venues, the Raleigh News and Observer reported.
Cooper also vetoed a bill titled “Freedom to Celebrate the Fourth of July,” which would have allowed parades and fireworks shows in violation of the state’s Phase 2 restrictions.
Phase 3 was scheduled to begin June 26 but has been delayed to July 17.
Since North Carolina began reopening May 8, confirmed coronavirus cases have steadily risen. On Wednesday, a state record was set with 1,843. The overall death total is 1,391, including 66 in the past three days.

One afternoon in January 2016, Tina Long-Gray showed up at her brother Tony’s office. She seemed anxious, “different somehow,” Tony Long recalled in a phone call. They went for a walk, and Tina started crying, confessing to him that her marriage of 18 years wasn’t what it seemed. She told him she sometimes woke up to her husband Andre choking her, showing him the marks around her neck. “Fresh bruises,” he said.
She had a plan to leave and had already purchased a house, but she worried that Andre was going to kill her. “She made me promise that I would take care of her kids,” Tony said. “She kept repeating, ‘promise me, promise me, promise me.’”
Two weeks later—the night before Tina planned to move into her new home—Andre Gray took her gun from a safe and shot her in front of their two children. He then shot both of them and killed himself. As Amber, their daughter, lay bleeding from her stomach, she realized that he had unplugged all the phones in the house to keep them from calling for help. After a two week stay in the hospital, she’d later learn he’d locked the garage door, too. “If we had tried to leave that night, we wouldn’t have been able to get out,” she said.

Before coronavirus lockdowns, domestic violence-related mass shootings like the one that killed Tina were among the most common in the U.S. Between 2014 and 2019, almost 60% of shooting incidents with four or more casualties involved an aggressor with a history of—or in the act of—domestic violence, an analysis by Bloomberg News found. This is a troubling statistic made even more so during a pandemic that has people spending more time at home and buying more guns.

As a domestic violence survivor this premise makes total sense to me. I feared for my life and the lives of others in my daily orbit while I lived with my abuser. He was able to find and continue to harass and threaten me even after I was able to escape from him and move three hours away. He did not quit until he found a new girlfriend. I am so thankful that I escaped. I am haunted by my belief that he was a ticking time bomb, completely capable of mass murder.

APD (Antisocial Personality Disorder) is a DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition), diagnosis assigned to individuals who habitually and pervasively disregard or violate the rights and considerations of others without remorse. People with Antisocial Personality Disorder may be habitual criminals, or engage in behavior which would be grounds for criminal arrest and prosecution, or they may engage in behaviors which skirt the edges of the law, or manipulate and hurt others in non-criminal ways which are widely regarded as unethical, immoral, irresponsible, or in violation of social norms and expectations. Those with APD often possess an impaired moral conscience and make decisions driven purely by their own desires without considering the needs or negative effects of their actions on others. Impulsive and criminal behavior is common. The terms psychopathy or sociopathy are also used, in some contexts synonymously, in others, sociopath is differentiated from a psychopath, in that a sociopathy is rooted in environmental causes, while psychopathy is genetically based.
The term antisocial may be confusing to the lay public, as the more common definition outside of clinical usage is an individual who is a loner or socially isolated. The literal meaning of the word antisocial can be more descriptive to both the lay public and professionals. To be anti-social is to be against society: against rules, norms, laws and acceptable behavior. Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder tend to be charismatic, attractive, and very good at obtaining sympathy from others; for example, describing themselves as the victim of injustice. Some studies suggest that the average intelligence of antisocials is higher than the norm. Antisocials possess a superficial charm, they can be thoughtful and cunning, and have an intuitive ability to rapidly observe and analyze others, determine their needs and preferences, and present it in a manner to facilitate manipulation and exploitation. They are able to harm and use other people in this manner, without remorse, guilt, shame or regret. It is widely stated that antisocials are without empathy, however this can be disputed, as sadistic antisocials will use empathy to experience their victim's suffering, and derive a fuller pleasure from it (Turvey, 1995). This is depicted in the classic work A Cask of Amontillado by Poe, as the main character entombs another man alive “...then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain. The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labours and sat down upon the bones.” (Poe, 1846 ).* Some research also suggests that sociopaths and psychopaths do have degrees of empathy, but with an innate ability to switch it off at will. (Meffer, Gazzola, den Boer, Bartells, 2013). This connection to empathy may give hope to future successful treatment as it suggests individuals with APD may be trained.
Symptoms & Criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder
According to the DSM-5, there are four diagnostic criterion, of which Criterion A has seven sub-features.
Disregard for and violation of others rights since age 15, as indicated by one of the seven sub features:
Failure to obey laws and norms by engaging in behavior which results in criminal arrest, or would warrant criminal arrest
Lying, deception, and manipulation, for profit or self-amusement,
Impulsive behavior
Irritability and aggression, manifested as frequently assaults others, or engages in fighting
Blatantly disregards safety of self and others,
A pattern of irresponsibility and
Lack of remorse for actions (American Psychiatric Association, 2013)

If President Bodybags does indeed have ADD/ADHD I doubt he can sit attentively still long enough for anyone to read anything to him, much less a WSJ article that on the face of it, will be nothing he's interested in hearing.
There is NO "intervention" or "historic repudiation" at the ballot box or otherwise, that will cure what ails president psychopath/sociopath.
Any notion that suggests differently is seriously delusional.

The world’s premier health agency pushed a flawed coronavirus containment strategy — until it disappeared from public view one day before the outbreak was declared a pandemic.

On January 17, the world’s most trusted public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced it was screening travelers from Wuhan, China, because of a new infectious respiratory illness striking that city.
It was the CDC’s first public briefing on the outbreak, coming as China reported 45 cases of the illness and two deaths linked to a seafood and meat market in Wuhan. Chinese health officials had not yet confirmed that the new illness was transmitted from person to person. But there was reason to believe that it might be: four days earlier, officials in Thailand confirmed their first case, a traveler from Wuhan who had not visited the seafood market.
“Based on the information that CDC has today, we believe the current risk from this virus to the general public is low,” said Nancy Messonnier, the CDC’s director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Messonnier, 54, was a veteran of the CDC’s renowned Epidemiological Intelligence Service, where she had risen through the ranks during the national responses to the anthrax attacks and the previous decade’s swine flu pandemic to eventually head the agency’s vaccines center.

Then, when the containment strategy's failure became undeniable, just one day before the WHO declared the outbreak a pandemic — the CDC disappeared from public view.
“When the outbreak started, we had an aggressive tracing program, but unfortunately, as the cases rose, it went beyond the capacity,” CDC Director Robert Redfield later testified to Congress.
“We lost the containment edge.”

Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen today announced that North Carolina will remain in Safer at Home Phase 2 for three more weeks. Cooper also announced that face coverings must be worn when people are in public places as officials seek to stabilize concerning trends of increasing viral spread.
Cooper and Cohen were joined by Dennis Taylor, President of the North Carolina Nurses Association and Eugene A. Woods, President and CEO of Atrium Health.
“North Carolina is relying on the data and the science to lift restrictions responsibly, and right now our increasing numbers show we need to hit the pause button while we work to stabilize our trends,” said Governor Cooper. “We need to all work together so we can protect our families and neighbors, restore our economy, and get people back to work and our children back to school.”
“I know North Carolinians are strong, resilient and care deeply about our communities. We pride ourselves on helping our neighbors. The best way we can do that now is by taking the simple action of wearing a face covering that covers your nose and mouth. If we each do our part, we can get back to the people and places we love,” said Dr. Mandy Cohen, NCDHHS Secretary.
Growing evidence shows that cloth face coverings, when worn consistently, can decrease the spread of COVID-19, especially among people who are not yet showing symptoms of the virus. Until now, face coverings had been strongly recommended. Under today’s executive order, people must wear face coverings when in public places where physical distancing is not possible.
In addition, certain businesses must have employees and customers wear face coverings, including retail businesses, restaurants, personal care and grooming; employees of child care centers and camps; state government agencies under the Governor’s Cabinet; workers and riders of transportation; and workers in construction/trades, manufacturing, agriculture, meat processing and healthcare and long-term care settings.
“Wearing a face covering is an easy thing to do that can make a huge impact for all of us. A major spike in cases would be catastrophic to the system, and without your cooperation, nurses and our fellow healthcare providers will have a harder time caring for sick patients for weeks and months to come,” said Dennis Taylor, a nurse, and President of the North Carolina Nurses Association.
“As the leader of the state’s largest health system, I am pro-health and also 100 percent pro-business. In fact, the two are inextricably connected and I’m very proud of the way business leaders and health experts are working together to keep our economy strong,” said Eugene A. Woods, President and CEO of Atrium Health. “Medical science says to reduce the spread of COVID-19 masking works, and my sincere hope is that all the people of North Carolina can join forces to make wearing a mask not something we feel we have to do – but something that we want to do to keep each other, our neighbors, our children and our loved ones healthy and safe”
Based on the metrics laid out in April by Governor Cooper and Secretary Cohen, North Carolina is evaluating a combination of the data from the following categories that shows the indicators moving in the wrong direction, causing officials to implement today’s pause in Phase 2.
Trajectory in COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Surveillance Over 14 Days
North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVID-like illness is increasing.
Trajectory of Lab-Confirmed Cases Over 14 Days
North Carolina’s trajectory of lab-confirmed cases starting to level, but is still increasing.

North Carolina labs and labs around the country are seeing supply shortages for laboratory chemicals needed to process tests.

There are over 1,500 full-time and part-time staff supporting contact tracing efforts at the local health department level, including the 309 Carolina Community Tracing Collaborative contact tracers. These new hires reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, and 44% are bilingual.

When Dr. Craig Spencer got on the New York City subway Monday morning following an overnight hospital shift, the emergency room doctor said all the people he saw were wearing masks.
"I think that people here remember how bad it was, really just a month, two months, ago and we don't want to go through that again," Spencer, director of global health in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, said Monday on CNBC's "Closing Bell."
“We're hoping that everyone around the country learns the lessons that we unfortunately had to learn the hard way," Spencer said, as New York City enters the second phase of its coronavirus reopening while other states across the U.S. see a spike in cases.
New York City, the epicenter of the country's outbreak, has seen its daily count of Covid-19 cases fall dramatically from its late May and early April levels, when more than 5,000 new infections were frequently being reported each day. Daily cases have been under 400 for over a week, according to the city's health department.

When Barcelona's Liceu opera opened on Monday for its first concert since mid-March, it did so to a full house — of plants.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu filled its 2,292 seats with plants for a performance by the UceLi Quartet, which it called a prelude to its 2020-2021 season. The string quartet serenaded its leafy audience with Giacomo Puccini's "Crisantemi," in a performance that was also made available to human listeners via livestream.
"After a strange, painful period, the creator, the Liceu's artistic director and the curator Blanca de la Torre offer us a different perspective for our return to activity, a perspective that brings us closer to something as essential as our relationship with nature," according to a release on the Liceu's website.
The plants came from local nurseries and will be donated along with a certificate from the artist to 2,292 health care professionals, specifically at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona.

Facebook’s Google Photos transfer tool, first announced for the US and Canada back in April, is now available globally, the company announced on Thursday.
The new data transfer tool allows you to create copies of all of the photos or videos on your Facebook account and transfer them to a linked Google Photos one. The tool was first made available in select parts of Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America last December and it’s been expanding to more countries since.
Here’s how to use the new data transfer tool on Facebook:
While logged into your Facebook account, click on the down arrow at the end of the upper menu bar and select “Settings.”
Select the tab that reads “Your Facebook Information.”
Click on “Transfer a copy of your Photos or Videos.”
Right now, users can only store photos on Google Photos. However, a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge in April that the “people will also be able to transfer photos to other companies that join the Data Transfer Program.”
