Albright: State Dept. vacancies a 'national security emergency'
Source: CNN
By Daniella Diaz, CNN
Updated 9:32 AM ET, Thu November 30, 2017
Washington (CNN)Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright believes the US is facing a "national security emergency" because of the vacancies and staffing issues at the State Department.
"If the US military were facing a recruitment and retention crisis of this magnitude, few would hesitate to call it a national security emergency," Albright wrote in an op-ed published in The Washington Post on Wednesday night. "Well, that is what we are facing (in the State Department). And while it saddens me to criticize one of my successors, I have to speak out because the stakes are so high." She said turnover at the State Department is normal, but once people leave, the positions need to be filled, and the Trump administration has left many positions vacant.
"Change within the Foreign Service and the State Department's civil service is not unusual. In fact, the system is designed to bring in fresh blood on a regular basis," she wrote. "There is, however, a big difference between a transfusion and an open wound. There is nothing normal about the current exodus."
Albright, a strong critic of President Donald Trump and his administration, wrote that diplomacy is the "first line of defense."

Minister who sang for Roy Moore lied for son accused of molesting Honduran orphans

One of the ministers who serves a Theodore church where Roy Moore spoke Wednesday night was federally convicted of trying to block an investigation involving claims his son molested children in Honduras.
Rev. Bill Atkinson led the music portion of the Moore event at the Magnolia Springs Baptist Church, where the U.S. Senate candidate spoke for over 20 minutes and was interrupted twice by people in the audience.
In 2012, Atkinson was found guilty of obstruction and conspiracy for ordering two of his children to destroy a hard drive of a digital video recorder, which held evidence that incriminated his son for child molestation. At the time, William James "Will" Atkinson IV was in a Honduras jail awaiting trial on charges that he molested children at an orphanage the Atkinson family owned. Those allegations came to light when his younger brother, Jonathan Atkinson, set up a secret surveillance system in Will's office after some of the children said they had been touched inappropriately.
Authorities maintained that the eldest Atkinson then tried to get his son out of Honduras and back to Theodore.

Michigan Rep. John Conyers won't seek reelection amid damning sexual harassment scandal
BY CHRIS SOMMERFELDT
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Updated: Wednesday, November 29, 2017, 6:41 PM
Michigan Rep. John Conyers has decided to not seek reelection next year amid disturbing allegations that he sexually harassed at least two female staffers, sources said Wednesday.
Two people close to Conyers told Detroit TV station WDIV that the 88-year-old congressman will not resign over accusations that he groped one coworker and fired another after she refused his sexual advances. Conyers will, however, announce early next year that he won't run for reelection, the sources said.
Multiple spokespeople for Conyers did not return requests for comment Wednesday evening.
Conyers, who is longest serving member of the House, has denied all wrongdoing but nonetheless stepped down from his ranking seat on the House Judiciary Committee amid pushback from fellow Democrats last week.

Moore: Socialists, Liberals, LGBT People Behind Accusations Against Me
Source: Talking Points Memo
By MATT SHUHAM Published NOVEMBER 30, 2017 10:08 AM
Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Wednesday blamed the allegations of sexual misconduct against him on LGBT people and liberals, while denying that he pursued sexual relationships with teenagers when he was in his 30s.
When I say they who are they?' Moore asked, referring to individuals behind a conspiracy to derail his campaign with false and malicious claims, according to BuzzFeed.
Theyre liberals. They dont hold conservative values. They are the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender who want to change our culture. Theyre socialists who want to change our way of life, putting man above God and then government is our God.
Theyre the Washington establishment that simply wants to keep their jobs, do the same thing and do everything the same, so they dont lose their position, their power, their prestige.

Conservative site gets major blowback after defending Moore dating teens 'to raise a large family'
BY JOE CONCHA - 11/30/17 10:03 AM EST
The Federalist, a conservative news and opinion site, earned scorching pushback on social media Thursday after it published an opinion piece defended Alabama GOP Senate hopeful Roy Moore dating teenagers in his 30's on the grounds that it's "not without some merit if one wants to raise a large family."
The commentary comes with less than two weeks before a special election between Democrat Doug Jones and Moore, who is accused of sexual misconduct and assault by several women who said he made advances toward them when they were teenagers as young as 14.
"Here is one thing we know and should admit from the start: in his early thirties, Moore had a penchant for dating teenagers. Apparently, this was not an uncommon occurrence during this time," Tully Borland, an associate professor of philosophy at Ouachita Baptist University and a former member of 82nd Airborne Division, wrote for the site.
"Apparently, this was not an uncommon occurrence during this time. In fact, this practice has a long history and is not without some merit if one wants to raise a large family," Borland adds. The story quickly went viral, climbing to one of the top trending topics on Twitter with the negative responses from both the left and right.

No major change in number of jobs lost to foreign trade since Trump's election: report
Source: The Hill
BY MAX GREENWOOD - 11/30/17 09:50 AM EST
The number of U.S. jobs eliminated due to foreign competition since President Trump's election last year has largely kept pace with previous years, according to a new report.
Citing an analysis of Labor Department data by the labor coalition Good Jobs Nation, HuffPost reported Thursday that more than 93,000 U.S. jobs have been eliminated since Trump's election due to foreign trade.
That's roughly on par with the previous five years, which saw an average of 87,500 jobs per year eliminated.
Workers who lose their jobs due to foreign trade are eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), a program that allows them to receive benefits such as subsidized health insurance and extended unemployment benefits.

Rep. Seth Moulton's plan to overhaul House Democrats with a 'new generation of leaders'
By Eric Bradner, CNN
Updated 9:26 AM ET, Thu November 30, 2017
Washington (CNN)Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts -- who has vented for months about House Democrats' leadership -- has big ambitions for the military veterans he is backing in the 2018 midterm elections.
"I'm literally recruiting a new generation of leaders for the party," he said in an interview Wednesday.
The 39-year-old Marine veteran who served four tours of duty in Iraq has emerged as a leading fund-raiser and candidate recruiter for Democrats, even as he has called to oust House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
Moulton is rolling out a list Thursday of eight more House candidates -- all military veterans -- he is endorsing in the 2018 midterm elections. That brings the list of Moulton-backed candidates to 19.
The endorsements come on top of a travel schedule that has included recent trips to Iowa for a steak fry in Des Moines and to New Hampshire ahead of this year's municipal elections. It's all fed speculation that Moulton could be eyeing a 2020 presidential run -- and has elevated him into conversations about the list of vice presidential prospects.

November 29, 2017 at 7:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard
President Trump has told associates he feels good about the way he has navigated the Alabama Senate race that has riven the Republican Party and is confident he will come out fine no matter what happens in the contest, the Washington Post reports.
Trump has said privately that if Republican nominee Roy Moore wins, he would reject any move by Republican leadership to expel him from the Senate and would welcome his support on legislation
And if Moore loses, Trump will simply distance himself and remind people that he backed the current senator, Luther Strange, in the primary.
